I actually haven't told him which interpretation was mine, and he doesn't theorise the timeline himself (although he has a passing interest). To be honest, as a new student studying Japanese, I just think he wants to test his abilities. Whether you accept his translation as accurate is your call; he's very a smart person but I'm not sure whether experience is on his side.

As for my translation process, it's as follows:

First, I gather the quotes I want to translate from the text dump. Then I read the quotes, look any words I'm not familiar with up, and then write the quote down in English. After that I go back over them to proofread and check the translation. And lastly I go to the English text dump and add NoA's translations. Zelda games have (for the most part) fairly simple dialogue, so it doesn't take all that long to do.

A couple of weeks ago, I got my hands on the Japanese ROMs to the Oracles games. I decided to play through them just for fun, but while I did so, I took screenshots of some of the dialogue and have just finished translating it. I went Ages -> Seasons.

First up is the beginning to Ages:

Mh, so the title of Legendary Hero is given to Link in the Japanese version also. I had this suspicion that it could have been added in the English version to tie in with the modified Link's Awakening manual (seeing as LA's Japanese manual does not use the term). Seems that was not the case.

Well, a "Reason" is a sort if internal conviction of some sort, like a philosophy or a worldview, that's powerful enough to fight the "Common Sense" of the world (See earlier posts of mine of one's will fighting the world's). In legends and fiction, this can be taken to the extreme by spiritually astute individuals, like a telekinetic using his or her Reason to alter the world around them. It's not a conscious form of influencing the world, but more of working "automatically" off of your subconscious. Even normal people do it, such as a person with low self-esteem failing a test as long as they believe they will.

Examples in fiction would be Haruhi Suzumiya, probably one of the best known, but for this particular scenario, a better one would be Final Fantasy Tactics Advance. Mewt's Reason is projected, and the five Crystals that stabilize Mewt's Ivalice cemented the Reason he projected, which is often the case when a Reason SEVERELY alters the common sense of the real world. An easier analogy would be a spell that's in effect as long as the Wizard's wand is safe. These objects are typically known as extensions of the Reason.

Now back to the Oracles. These eight Essences are "Reasons." The Oracles, even though they are conscious of their power, project a Reason of how they think nature or history should be, and their wills and magic are strong enough to make this the case. But the existence of the eight Essences means that their powers are greatly conflicting with the "common sense" of the world's true form. Perhaps these are temporary manifestations made to fight the corruption of Twinrova. Or perhaps it's another clue to the "chaos" before the coming of the Goddesses...

The Maka Tree first mentioning the essences in Ages was one of the passages I had screenshots of but didn't translate.

Since I had it, I made a quick translation of it just now:

I can?t remember clearly, but I think the 8 ?Reasons of Space-Time? that are said to be scattered around Labrennu are necessary to defeat Veran!
I don't recall, but I think you need the eight Essences of Time hidden in Labrynna to beat Veran!

When Midna says that Link turned into the beast because he's "a hero", that could also be translated as "the hero". This is because Japanese doesn't have articles like "a" and "the". For the most part anytime a translation from Japanese uses one of those two, the translator had to decide which one was more fitting.

Also, I just have to say how much I love Midna's speech style in Japanese. NoA did a pretty good job of getting the gist of it across, but Japanese speech styles are pretty much impossible to fully convey in a translation. That's one reason I enjoy seeing the original Japanese of things like this. In Japanese, speech styles can greatly vary depending on the age, gender, and personality of whoever is speaking.

Yeah, NoA did a good job localizing TP, yet I must say I am upset that important things like this always manage to slip them by: It was a sign of the awakening of that which sleeps within you, the power of one who is chosen by the gods.

Oh, so he's talking about the Triforce, there. NoA said it was the power of the Hero, but apparently that power is actually the Triforce of Courage - and Link had that at the end of OoT (makes sense, doesn't it?). And what difference does this make, you might ask? Well, frankly, it's different because we now have absolutely no reason to believe that Ganondorf got the Triforce of Power during the execution scene. See, provided that the game itself has some sense of continuity, it stand to reason that it, too, simply "awakened" at that time when he needed it the most, like it did with Link. That explains why the Sages were caught of guard, why Ganondorf didn't break free earlier, and all that jazz. It still doesn't explain how Ganondorf got the power of the gods in the first place, but as I see it, we can rule out the idea that he received it from the gods at that very moment.

Now that that's out of the way, I have another request for you, jacen: could you take a look at MM in general? You know, the Mask Salesman, Majora, the giants, the King of Ikana, all that interesting stuff. I don't expect any huge differences, but it could prove interesting. Just do whatever you feel like doing.

Ah, yes, it does confirm that, doesn't it? I suppose I didn't think of that because I had always thought it was referring to the ToC in that scene. But, yeah, that's a good point. It uses the exact same wording that it does to refer to Ganondorf's Triforce piece. And good call on the MM stuff, that's my favorite game ever.
