Sports games- Swing a bat or club, throw a football, guide the pass, drop the hook into the water, guide the pick...

Although what about us uncoordinated people that RELY on the computer to do the actual movement? I can strike out in baseball in real life, but computers were supposed to make me feel like I stood a chance. Now even they're gonna turn against me. XD

I'm sure it won't be hard as real baseball. They'll still toss some things in to hold your hand, don't worry ;).

At first i thought WTF! 0_o

Now I dont mind its not the end of the world.

Developers seem happy with it

“Nintendo has long been a trailblazer, and this controller design reinforces that reputation,” said Brian Farrell, president and CEO of THQ. “We enthusiastically support Nintendo’s next console because we believe their approach of continual innovation is very much in line with our own strategy of creating unique and innovative games for the next generation of hardware.”

“What we’re seeing from this controller is the same thing we saw with Nintendo DS,” said Chuck Huebner, Head of Worldwide Studios, Activision, Inc. “It’s a system that’s designed with an eye on enticing new players to the video game industry, and that’s something we firmly support.”

“Game control is essential – it’s the area where perhaps the most game-play improvement can be made,” said John Schappert, Sr. Vice President and General Manager of Electronic Arts Canada.

“While our portfolio represents a full array of titles across all genres, I think our sports titles might be the first to immediately take advantage of what this novel ‘freehand’ type of control has to offer.”

“We were among the first publishers to see the control design in action,” said Serge Hascoet, Chief Creative Officer of Ubisoft. “We’re excited about the new controller and are looking forward to taking advantage of its innovative aspects.”

More importantly these guys

Not wanting everyone to take his own word for it, Iwata then introduced clips of game developers giving their takes on the Revolution controller, with the concept and execution earning high marks from Final Fantasy XII producer Akitoshi Kawazu, Dragon Quest creator Yuji Horii, and Metal Gear Solid director Hideo Kojima.

"'You've done it!' was my impression," Kojima said. "This was totally unexpected. I was pleasantly surprised because the controller is quite comfortable yet provides something brand new."

And for those of you who cant hack this controller

Iwata addressed concerns people might have about playing retro games on the Revolution's new controller through its virtual console backwards compatibility, saying that classic-styled expansion controllers would be available so people could enjoy the games as they originally remembered them.

After reading what gamespot had to say and the fact that the Rev pad worked better on Metroid Prime 2 than it did on the GC and has a PC feel to it I cant wait to see all the FPS that come out.

Go read it yourself!

I was looking through BBC news, when I came across this most bizarre of news.

A control pad that looks just like a remote control? It's just... Well, this confirms only one thing to me. Nintendo have gone crazy. Now, normally, I love crazy. Monty Python, Vic Reeves and Bob Mortimer, WarioWare, Katamari Damancy... but this... this just doesn't seem right.

I'm too used to control pads. I've even resorted to a control pad to play my PC games. They're easy to use.

When I first heard that the control pad would be wireless, I was very worried. This adds battery costs to your gaming problems and what if the batteries die mid-game? How annoying would that be?

All I can say is, the battery better be rechargeable and interchangeable with a standby battery.

Captain Obvious here to save the day!

It's not just a remote. It's a lightgun. A mouse. A controller. A motion detector. A connect anything and everything. And, if rumble packs live on, a vibrator. >.>

Oh thank god I wasn't the only one who saw that. Was anyone creeped out by the guy in the video who just stands there, pointing a vibrating controller at a screen and staring intently, then suddenly sits down, looking exhausted? This thing does lend itself to games best not discussed.

Well it's more differant then expected, but if you can use the old style cube controls to play rev games then I'll use it. I don't want some TV remote with control pad attachment, I want a rock solid multiple buttoned controller that I can thwack people with if they're beating me in the game. I feel disappointed, but I won't say no until I see and know more.

I'm still skeptical, but now that I see it, there's definitely some potentital to it. I'll really need to hold it and use it myself before making a final judgement call. All the footage so far as the controller playing specific parts of different genres.

Here's the problem (as I see it): swinging the controller like Link swings his sword is really cool, but what about using items? Horseback combat? Just flat out running across a field? What if I'm facing down an army of Moblins, and my arm is tired as hell? Can I use the buttons for sword combat? Won't doing it the regular way feel extremely awkward on a controller that's obviously not designed to play games the regular way? These are the kinds of things that make me still skeptical about the controller.

In addition to that, this pretty much means Nintendo will never be a multiplatform company again. Because of the controller's setup, all Revolution games will be exclusive - specifically designed for Revolution gameplay. While this means third-party developers can't treat Nintendo like an afterthought anymore, it also means that third-party developers have a legitimate reason for NOT making games for the Revolution.

I'm glad Nintendo is straying off the beaten path with this, because now they won't look like jackasses for all their previous claims. I'm glad that I'm getting the Xbox 360, because I still want to play next-gen games normally, on a normal controller. But in any case, the controller is unique, which is pretty much the only Nintendo promised it'd be. And for that, my hat's off to the big N. But this is something that could really go either way.

EDIT-Oh, and there's one thing I'm forgetting. If Super Smash Bros Online is going to be the Rev's killer app, how the hell would you play it?

^ that's why there is the gamecube ports, so you can play third party games there. I mean, the other controllers (Xbox and sony) didn't really change, so the third party will not have too much trouble, since My guess is that they will use the GCN controller. I mean, what else can they do? i don't think they'd abandon nintendo...

and the ssbm thing would be friggin awesome! think about it!

Then you'll probably get killed, which adds some element of realism while still allowing someone with a Gamer's Physique (Read: Morbidly Obese) to be skilled.

Can I use the buttons for sword combat?

If the game is designed that way.

Won't doing it the regular way feel extremely awkward on a controller that's obviously not designed to play games the regular way? These are the kinds of things that make me still skeptical about the controller.

Ah, but this is what attachments are for. You'll notice that with the scollball thingamawhatsit the only real thing that sets it apart from regular controllers is the extras, like motion sensors and whatnot.

I'm glad Nintendo is straying off the beaten path with this, because now they won't look like jackasses for all their previous claims.

Yeah I'm a little surprised by that. There's a level of honesty here that blows my socks off.

EDIT-Oh, and there's one thing I'm forgetting. If Super Smash Bros Online is going to be the Rev's killer app, how the hell would you play it?

With a controller and the Internets?

I am intriqued by Nintendo's choice. Like anything with Nintendo, this is either Brillance or madness. I wouldn't completly judge it until you have it your hand yourself. In any case, we will whether it is good or not at launch.

By the way, does anyone here have a launch date. I'm curious as hell to see when they will be fighting Sony and Microsoft.

Most third-parties have either cut themselves off from Nintendo, or treat them like they're an afterthought. Kind of "Well when we're done finishing this game for Xbox and PS2, take the PS2 port, slap a Nintendo logo on it, and call it a day." I wouldn't be surprised if this controller caused third-parties to just flat out leave?

Plus, isn't emphasizing the Cube controller more than the Revolution remote be counter-productive?

and the ssbm thing would be friggin awesome!  think about it!

That's the problem, I can't. How would you play SSBM with the Revolution controller?

I don't see why it has to be like that. The controller will probably be able to still play normal games. All the controller means is the exclusives will definatly stay exclusive.

Yeah, third person fighters are going to be weird with this thing. Maybe they'll abandon the whole third person genre and move to a strictly first person Super Smash Bros. or even Zelda. First person seems to be what they're focusing on now, with total immersion and all.

Zelda's additional items might be accessed using one of those buttons, and then you can use them as normal. Hookshot would be good. The bow... you could probably just point and shoot with, holding the trigger down to pull the bowstring back to full power.

That joypad extension is included in the deal, I hope. Unless I missed reading that and am just being a dumbass. Which I probably am, but eh.

But, I'd want to play around with it first, before shelling out a good deal of money to get something awkward, y'know?

^ true...

but, HOW, in response to your lack of ideas, they could make us make us virtually fight each other! lets say it's link vs samus. you literaly face each other (eye to eye) and fight, while looking at the screen to see the result. If they could do that, I'd play it for ever. EVER!!!!

He means look at your opponent and take them on by waving the controller at them instead of pressing buttons and looking at the screen. That will never happen because It's a bad, bad idea.

Third party people have been saying they like what they see and are developing stuff for it, so i dont see why everyone thinks their jumping the boat. I think Ninty knows that third partyness let them down and i dont think they intentionally designed a pad that would cost them that again.

You're right. It is one thing to have killer app first-party titles but if a console does't have third party support, they're sunk.

oh well. The way i see it, there are three types of people: people that LOVE it, people that don't care, and people that hate it *looks at vet*

the people that hate it, in my opinion, are chust not seeing the awesome posibitlites of this controller. and remember vet, it can be turned sideways for "normal" use. so if i were you, i'd rethink not getting it.
