It's entirely different from the radiance of Hyrule's light, don't you think?
It's like the sun of your world, [Link].

To be fair, this looks much worse than it is. They're speaking in different senses. Japanese Midna is talking about its appearance, English Midna is talking about its purpose. And NoA aren't wrong about that, because we also have this quote:

The Sols are like suns that illuminate this world.
The Sols were like the suns that illuminate this world.

...It's kind of the same, both say they're like suns.

Yes, NoA obviously made that change with the latter quote in mind, but what did that accomplish? In their version, Midna just repeats the same thing twice over and we missed out on her pondering over the Twilight Realm's lack of a proper sun. That?s not good either way.

To be fair, this looks much worse than it is. They're speaking in different senses. Japanese Midna is talking about its appearance, English Midna is talking about its purpose. And NoA aren't wrong about that, because we also have this quote

Sure, but when I said "ignorance" I meant it just the way that Hero of Legend said. They deliberately ignored information.

What about the Great Deku Tree and the Light Spirits? Is the expression used with them?

Good idea! The literal 守護神 does not reappear in OoT or TP, but 守り神 which means about the same. And I've picked out similar occurences:

- The Light Spirits refer to themselves as 守りし者 = "one that protects".

- The Deku Sprout calls the Deku Tree 森の精霊 = "spirit of the forest".

- A Kokiri girl says:

だって デクの樹サマは アタシたち コキリ族の生みの親。 森の守り神ですもの!
That's because the great Deku Tree is the creator of us Kokiri. He's the guardian deity of the forest!

That's because the Great Deku Tree is our father, the forest guardian, and he gave life to all of us Kokiri!

守り神 means "guardian deity". "Creator" is meant in a parental sense.

- And the Deku Tree himself:

ハイラル王国に 広がる 深き森? その森を 守り続けてきた ワシを、人は デクの樹と 呼んでおった?
The deep forest that extends in the kingdom of Hyrule... That forest I have continually protected. People call me the Deku Tree...

In the vast, deep forest of Hyrule... Long have I served as the guardian spirit... I am known as the Deku Tree...

In this forest, there live persons called the Kokiri tribe.

The children of the forest, the Kokiri, live here with me.

They each have their own fairy.

Each Kokiri has his or her own guardian fairy.

- In TP about the coral earring:

ゾーラの里の守り神とされる魚が好む 貴重な珊瑚で作られた耳飾り
An earring made of valuable corals preferred by the fish that is considered the guardian deity of Zora's Domain.

Although this sounds suspiciously like Jabu Jabu, it refers to the reekfish of course.
That said, Jabu Jabu *is* called 守り神 (guardian deity) as well.

Thanks, Jumbie. I was just wondering whether my initial idea of the existence of "Twilight Spirits" had any real validity in the context of the Japanese script. But I guess if the term for "guardian deity" can refer to inanimate objects, then it probably does refer to the Sols (as no voice is given to make the players aware of the existence of separate entities).

This will be my last update in a while, as I'm going on a 2-week trip tomorrow. Sorry that I didn't make it to the Zant quotes anymore...
But I won't go without throwing the unused Twili quotes out at last. I found them in TP's textdump, both English and Japanese, and they were going to be used for the now mute Twili populace. They were meant to be spoken by separate characters, but I've bundled them in one quote here:

黒い霧 この国カラ 輝き奪っタ・・・
The black fog stole the sparkle from this land?

The black fog? It stole the sparkle from this land?

Unless the power of light is recovered, the palace cannot be entered?

Without the power of light, we cannot enter the main palace?

Without the Sols, the Pedestals of Light lost their sparkle?

Without the Sols, the Pedestals of Light are without their sparkle?

If the two Sols are not quickly returned to the pedestals?

We must return the two Sols to the Pedestals quickly!

If the two Sols are put in the correct places, light will shine?

If the two Sols are put in the correct places, light will shine?

Return the Sols to their proper places?

Return the Sols to their proper places?

The Sols, properly and symmetrically left and right?

Place the Sols adjacent, left and right?

This direction to Pedestal I?

One of the Sols on Pedestal II?

Put one Sol on Pedestal II?

This sparkle? Our light?

This brightness? It's OUR light?

You returned the Sols?

You returned the Sols?

Thank you?

Thank you?

Our land has been controlled by Zant?

Zant controls our land now...

The palace belongs to our clan's royal family. We don't leave it to a traitor like Zant!

This is the royal family's palace! A traitor like Zant can't have it!

We don't acknowledge Zant as the king!

I will NEVER call Zant the king!

Our only royalty is the princess alone? No doubt she's still alive!

The only royalty we have is the princess. She's still alive!

That's why we await the princess's return.

And that's why we await the princess's return!

All the time we've been waiting for help?

We've been waiting for help to arrive?

How did you get to this world?

By any chance, are you the hero that the princess sent??

Could you?be the hero that the princess sent?

You surely are the hero that the princess sent?

You must be the hero that the princess sent?

Return the palace to the hands of the princess? Please?

Return the palace to the hands of the princess? Please?

We will protect the palace until the day that the princess returns.

We will protect the palace until the day that the princess returns!

Thank you?

Thank you?

So, how can I know that some of those couldn't have been intended for Midna? Well, they're all located in close proximity on the dump, and more importantly, the style of speech is unlike Midna's and is very peculiar: each line makes use of all three Japanese alphabets. Normally, charas that speak in Katakana (meaning that they're not fluent, speak oddly, or are animals) don't use Kanji at all, or even if they do, they certainly don't use Hiragana. Here though, the speakers replace some Hiragana symbols by their Katakana equivalents, which to me seems like they have an accent. Also I wouldn't say they're always grammatically correct either.

Ah yes, Duke Serkol wonders if they just disabled the "talk routine" for the Twili but kept the dialogue associated with them? A good hacker then might be able to restore it...

So, let's see what you can gather from the quotes about the originally planned gameplay in the Palace of Twilight!
And I dearly hope my absence won't be misused to derail this topic. There's always the option to make a new thread, and currently we're in dire need of some anyway...

See you soon guys, I'll miss ya!^^

That really made me sad... because.. A) imagine how much time they took creating that enemy, only to scrap it.. and B) I effing love enemies, and I've never had a game that had a satisfactory NUMBER of enemies (except maybe ones where they lack any depth, like Tales)... but I guess if that enemy was clunky and hard to fight.. then it's better to remove it than leave it in..

Okay, I got a lot of it done, so here goes.

I'm going to use the same format Jumbie did.

This is what Link's grandma says about the tunic:

そんな顔するもんじゃないよ いいから、着てごらん 今日はお前が 昔話に出てくる勇者様と 同じ歳になったお祝いの日なんだから 1日ぐらい 我慢しないと
Don?t make that face. Put it on. This is a day of celebration. You are now the same age as the hero of the legend. It?s just for one day, so bear with it.

Don't look so disappointed, dear one! Just try them on. Today is a day to celebrate! It is the day that you become the same age as the young hero spoken of in all the legends. You only have to wear them for one day, so don't look so down. Be proud, child!

It used to be that, when this day came, you would be considered an adult, prepare for a battle with evil ones, and be trained in swordfighting.

In the olden days, this was the day boys were finally considered to be men. They were taught the ways of the sword to prepare them for battle with their enemies.

The shield being used as a decoration in here is a relic from that time.

Hanging the family shield on the wall as decoration is another tradition that has been carried down from those days.

Next is what Orca says about the sword:

じゃが・・・お前の剣には気迫以上に 何か、あせりを感じる・・・
But?I can feel something impatient in your sword something more than its spirit?

And yet...I sense a certain anxiousness in the sword you hold...an eagerness that goes far beyond the mere desire to be wielded on the fields of battle...

I do not know what happened, but? If it?s you, that sword will not be misused?

I do not know what has happened... But I have faith in you. Somehow, I doubt you will misuse that sword...

Link, take it?

You may have it, Link. I give it freely. Take the blade with you...

From ancient times, this sword was said to drive away demons and to instill the desire to become strong into people.

Since the olden days, this sword has been used to fend off evil... Its blade is infused with the desire to become strong and righteous

Become strong, Link.

Be strong, Link.

The quote by the postman about the long ears:

まあ、聞けよ! オレは仕事がら 手紙を配達しているから いろんな島に行くんだが・・・・ 最近、各地で娘が誘拐されるって話を 聞いたことはないか? 何でも、誘拐されているのは お前さんみたいに耳の長い娘だって話だ それに確か、さらわれたあの子も 耳が長かったよな・・・? だからさ、あの鳥は お前さんと間違えて あの子を さらったんだよ!
Now, listen! To deliver letters for my job, I go to many islands?.. Haven?t you been hearing about girls being kidnapped in various places? Every single one of the girls who were kidnapped had long ears like you. Also, if I?m not mistaken, the girl who was just kidnapped had long ears, right?? That?s why that bird mistook that girl for you and kidnapped her!

Just be quiet for a moment, and I'll tell you! Now, as my work entails delivering letters, I spend much of my time traveling amongst the many different islands. As a result, I hear many things... Haven't any of you heard word that young girls have been getting kidnapped lately from all regions of the Great Sea? No matter. Whether you've heard it or not, that seems to be the case. Young girls with long ears like yours have been getting kidnapped, never to be seen again. And unless my eyes fail me, the young girl who was just kidnapped from this island also has long ears, does she not? Much like YOU do, Miss Fearsome Pirate. My point is that the bird mistook that poor girl for you, and that's why it grabbed her!

And the when the King of Red Lions talks about Ganondorf:

ヤツの名は ガノンドロフ
His name is Ganondorf.

His name is...Ganon...

He obtained the power of the gods, planned on transforming the world into a Makai of darkness, and was sealed by the power of the gods.

...He who obtained the power of the gods, attempted to cover the land in darkness, and was ultimately sealed away by the very power he hoped to command.

The emperor of the Makai in the ancient legend is that Ganondorf.

He is the very same Ganon... The emperor of the dark realm the ancient legends speak of...

I do not know why the gods? seal has broken, but, now that he has been revived, the world has once again begun to be threatened by his evil magical powers.

I do not know why the seal of the gods has failed, but now that Ganon has returned, the world is once again being threatened by his evil magic.

I should have more later.

Okay, here's some more.

The Deku Tree talking about the Hero of Time:

オマエノ ソノカッコウ モシヤ デンセツノ トキノユウシャカ? コクオウハ ツイニ トキノユウシャヲ ミツケタノカ?
Those clothes? could it be that you are the legendary Hero of Time? Has the king finally found the Hero of Time?

That garb you wear... Could you be the legendary hero? Has the king at long last found the Hero of Time?

What, you do not understand Hylian? Then I guess you are not the Hero of Time.

What is the matter? Do you not understand the ancient Hylian tongue? So...you are not the Hero of Time.

Sorry, sorry, when I saw you, nostalgic words came to my lips. I am the guardian deity of this forest, the Deku Tree. I thank you for rescuing me from danger. Is the one who led you here a talking boat called the King of Red Lions?

I must apologize. I was in error. I saw your clothing, and suddenly I felt a longing for an age gone by... That longing caused the ancient tongue to pass my lips. I am the guardian spirit of this Forest Haven the Deku Tree. I owe you my thanks for your aid in ridding me of those foul creatures... Tell me... Was it not the King of Red Lions the boat who speaks who led you to this place?

The Deku Tree talking about the Korogs:

コログたちは、ああやって 年に一度の儀式の後 各地に飛んでいって、実を植え 森を育てているのじゃ
Once a year, after this ceremony, the Korogs fly to various places and plant seeds to bring about forests.

Every year after the Koroks perform this ceremony, they fly off to the distant islands on the sea and plant my seeds in the hopes that new forests will grow.

A forest can change a small island into a large island. The day will come when all of the islands will become one in this way. Then all of the people living there will join hands and build a better world. That is my dream.

Forests hold great power they can change one tiny island into a much larger land. Soon, a day will come when all the islands are one, connected by earth and grove. And the people who live on that great island will be able to join hands and, together, create a better world. Such is my dream.

But the one you are pursuing is trying to prevent this.

...But the one you are chasing is trying to prevent that dream from ever coming to pass.

Link, your fate is now also the fate of the world. Proceed with caution.

Link... Already, your fate is tied to the fate of this world. You must proceed with great care.

The talk with Jabun:

ヒサシブリダナ ハイラルオウヨ
It?s been a while, King Hyrule.

Well met, Hyrule King!

It has been a while. More importantly, you are safe?

Well met indeed, Jabun. I am pleased to see that you are safe...

It seems that what we feared has begun.

The events which we have long feared seem to have been set into motion.

Yes, Ganon seems to have been revived.

Yes. It seems Ganon has returned. There can be no other explanation.

So does your having come to see me mean that you have found the Hero of Time?

If you have sought me out...it must mean you have found the Hero of Time, does it not?

No, I have not.

Unfortunately, that is not so.

Then why have you come to see me?

Then for what purpose have you come to see me?

The one I have brought with me is unrelated to the legend, but I can feel potential in the courage he possesses.

The one I have brought with me has no connection to the legendary one. And yet I sense great promise in the courage that this one possesses.

Potential? Are you saying we should leave the fate of Hyrule up to this potential?

Promise? You suggest that I leave the fate of Hyrule up to mere chance?

はい
Yes.

I do. It is the only way.

I understand. We should let the gods judge whether his courage is genuine or not.

I see. Then I suppose it is up to the gods to deem whether his courage is true.

Receive the guidepost to the gods.

I give to you the guidepost to the gods.

This jewel should break the curse Ganon has put upon this land.

This jewel should dispel the curse that Ganon has cast upon this land.

As I thought, that ominous rain and never-ending night were Ganon?s curse. He wants to turn this land into a land of darkness as well?

So...that foul rain and endless night were indeed elements of a curse brought on us by Ganon! He must intend to cast this land into pure darkness for all time...

By the way, have you found the location of the one who is descended from Zelda, King Hyrule?

Tell me, Hyrule King... Have you learned the whereabouts of the one who carries on the bloodline of the princess, Zelda?

?I think so.

...I believe I have.

You must not let Ganon get his hands on Zelda. I?m counting on you!

That is well. You must protect Zelda. She cannot be permitted to fall into the hands of Ganon. I am counting on you!

What Gohdan says before battle:

よくぞ ここまでたどり着いた
Well done in getting all the way here.

You have done well to find your way to this place.

Oh, chosen one.

Oh, chosen one...

Take the final test.

Accept this final challenge...

And after the battle:

今、道は開かれた
Now the path is opened.

The path can now be opened.

Oh, chosen one.

Oh, chosen one...

What happens from now on is the fate you have chosen.

What will now come to pass is tied to your fate to the path that you have chosen.

Proceed with caution.

Go forward with caution.

Ganondorf at the Forsaken Fortress:

我が名は ガノンドロフ この魔獣島の主だ
My name is Ganondorf. I am the master of this Demon Beast Island.

My name is Ganondorf... And I am the master of Forsaken Fortress.

By the way, kid, when you pulled that sword from its pedestal, the unmoving monsters all began to move at once, didn?t they?

By the way, boy... When you drew that sword of yours out of its resting place... Did you by chance notice how all of the monsters frozen in time down there suddenly began stirring again?

Do you understand what that means?

Do you understand precisely what that means? ...I highly doubt you do.

That sword is the Anti-Demon Sword that repels demons. However, it is also the annoying seal that was sealing my Mazoku.

Foolish child. While that sword is indeed the blade of evil's bane, at the same time, it has long played another role... You see, it is also a sort of key... a most wretched little key that has kept the seal on me and my magic intact!

You broke that seal?

By withdrawing the blade, you have broken that seal...

It?s useless! You still haven?t realized it!

Fool! ...Why do I waste my breath on a child? Do you still not understand?

You cannot defeat me with a sword that lacks the radiance to repel demons!!

You cannot defeat me with a blade that does not sparkle with the power to repel evil! What you hold is useless.

Go to the world of the dead and tell that to those who made this blade.

Go back to the world below, and tell that to the pathetic fools who made this blade!

You have lost your Drumpf card!!

Its power is gone, and its edges are dull!

Note: Ganondorf refers to the monsters as his mazoku. This literally means "Demon Tribe" or "Demon Race". The mazoku would be those he commands as the maou (Demon King).

Well, that's all for today.

Wait, NoA changed Ganondorf to Ganon? Ooh, does that mean that Ganon doesn't apply to the Gerudo form after all? >_< Although the KoRL uses Ganon again when talking to Jabun, so I give up on that one. Maybe NoA were being consistent - only Ganondorf himself uses his full name until towards the end, IIRC.

No big revelations yet, but wow, you've done a lot already. I think we'll be seeing some of the lines we really want soon. Thanks for this. Not knowing Japanese, I have no idea how the quality of your translations compares to Jumbie's, but it looks great. He might want to change some things slightly whenever he gets back...

Probably the most interesting thing so far is this line:

That sword is the Anti-Demon Sword that repels demons. However, it is also the annoying seal that was sealing my Mazoku.

Ganondorf's magic wasn't sealed, his minions were.

HA! According to the King of Red Lions, the seal on Ganondorf was broken, not circumvented. Winsauce.

Oh, cool, I can't believe I missed that. Probably because to 99% of us, the English and Japanese lines mean EXACTLY THE SAME THING, because we're interpreting intent, not semantics. Still, this topic has been great for ruling out those arguments. Hell, 95% of us don't give a damn whether or not bypassing a seal counts as breaking it, because unless it's actually stated that the seal still exists, the implication is naturally that it's been bypassed. We're not searching for stupid technicalities.

Anyway, we can continue this in the other topic.

So the King of Red Lions first stated that the seal on Ganondorf was broken, and then Ganondorf revealed that releasing the Master Sword broke the seal on his minions as well. That really is winsauce.

The King of Red Lions didn't know the Master Sword seal had not been broken. Later in the game he learns that Ganondorf escaped by way of a portal. The seal still trapped his minions, however. Likely the seal of the gods failed because- ohwai- Ganondorf eliminated the Master Sword's power, so it couldn't hold him.

I see... So this is the portal through which
Ganon was able to seep into the
unsuspecting world above.

It really depends on the description of this scene, not on the king's presuppositions; he's wrong on several counts throughout the game and changes his mind about things.

I guess it would make sense if Ganondorf and his minions were both tied to the same seal, and that Ganondorf was eventually able to break free because he was more powerful. I'm not sure whether the seal really ties to the Master Sword's power as the blade of evil's bane; Ganondorf suggests that the seal was separate from that power.

I've gotten some more done, but first...

It really depends on the description of this scene, not on the king's presuppositions; he's wrong on several counts throughout the game and changes his mind about things.

Here's the translation of the King of Red Lion's quote about the portal:

なるほど、ガノンはここから 地上に蘇ったというワケか・・・
I see. So Ganon was revived to the world above from here?

I see... So this is the portal through which Ganon was able to seep into the unsuspecting world above...

Now onto the king revealing who he is:

アンタかい? 私の石で勝手に話をしていたのは!
Was it you who was speaking through my stone without permission!

Are you him? Are you the one who was speaking through my stone without my permission? Answer me!

That stone is a refined version of the Gossip Stones that were handed down since ancient times by the Hyrule Royal Family. I made it.

That stone is an enhanced version of the Gossip Stones long spoken of in the legends of the Hyrulian Royal Family. I am the one who made it.

You made it? The Hyrule Royal Family?s Gossip Stone? I don?t understand what your saying!

You made it? The royal family's Gossip Stone? I'm sorry, but I have no idea what you're talking about.

You?ve heard of it haven?t you? Of the kingdom where the power of the gods slept in the legend of the hero.

Have neither of you heard the tales? Tales of the kingdom spoken of in the legend of the great hero... The place where the power of the gods lies hidden...

That kingdom is here, where you two are now.

This place, where the two of you now stand, is that kingdom.

And I am that kingdom?s king, Daphnes Nohansen Hyrule.

And I am its king: Daphnes Nohansen Hyrule.

Link, you remember my voice, do you not?

Link, do you not recognize my voice?

That?s right. I am the one who led you here, the King of Red Lions.

Indeed, I am the one who guided you here. I am the King of Red Lions.

If you had been able to defeat Ganon with that Master Sword, it would not have been necessary for me to reveal my true form?

There was no need for me to reveal my true identity to you so long as that blade, the Master Sword, could defeat Ganon...

Anyhow, you two, listen.

But now...both of you must listen to me.

Ganon, who desired the power of the gods, once turned this land of Hyrule into a world of darkness.

Once, long ago, this land of Hyrule was turned into a world of shadows by Ganon, who sought to obtain the power of the gods for his own evil ends.

I couldn?t hold him back with my power. There was nothing to do but pray to the gods and entrust the fate of the kingdom to them? Hearing this, the gods sealed Ganon and Hyrule by sinking them to the bottom of the ocean with a great rain and flood.

My power alone could not stop the fiend, and our only choice was to leave the fate of the kingdom in the hands of the gods... When the gods heard our pleas, they chose to seal away not only Ganon, but Hyrule itself...and so, with a torrential downpour of rains from the heavens... Our fair kingdom was soon buried beneath the waves, forgotten at the bottom of the ocean.

However, if all of the people of the kingdom were sealed, it would be the same as destroying it.

Yet all was not lost. For the gods knew that to seal the people away with the kingdom would be to grant Ganon's wish for the destruction of the land.

Before the sealing, the gods informed those who had been chosen to create a new country to flee to the tall mountains.

So, before the sealing of the kingdom, the gods chose those who would build a new country and commanded them to take refuge on the mountaintops.

They were your ancestors.

Those people were your ancestors.

Hundreds of years passed? If Ganon had never been revived, this land of Hyrule would never have woken from its eternal sleep.

Hundreds of years have passed since then... So long as Ganondorf was not revived, Hyrule would remain below, never waking from its slumber.

Tetra, come here.

Tetra, come to me.

Your necklace is a sacred treasure passed down by the Royal Family since ancient times called the Triforce of Wisdom.

This necklace you wear is part of a sacred treasure called the Triforce of Wisdom, which has been passed down for many ages within the royal family of Hyrule.

Your mother gave this to you telling you to treasure it, did she not?

Your mother passed this down to you and instructed you to treasure it...and to guard it with your life. Am I not correct?

That is the sacred power of the gods, a Triforce, that we must keep out of Ganon?s hands. It was entrusted to your ancestors by the gods. They were ordered to protect it to the end from evil power.

The Triforce of Wisdom is none other than the sacred power of the gods that we have kept from Ganon's clutches for so many long years. The gods placed upon your ancestors the task of protecting it from evil's grasp.

You must follow that old agreement. Even unto your death. I will now tell you the true reason behind this.

You, too, must abide by the laws of the past...and so the time has come for me to teach you the fate into which you were born, the very reason that you live.

I, I?

My...fate...

You are descended from the Hyrule Royal Family and are its legitimate successor?

You are the true heir of the royal family of Hyrule...the last link in the bloodline.

Zelda? I?m?a princess?

...Zelda? I'm...a princess?

It?s not surprising that you are confused?

You are confused, aren't you? I suppose such is to be expected.

Link! I?m sorry that you have been dragged into this.

Link! I am terribly sorry that you have been caught up in these events.

But now that Ganon knows that Tetra is Zelda, he will be frantically searching for her in order to obtain the power of the gods.

But now that it is known that Tetra is indeed Princess Zelda... Ganon will be searching frantically for this child in an attempt to get the power of the gods that she possesses. He will not rest until he has found her.

If he does so, he will turn not just Hyrule, but the world you live in as well, into a land of darkness.

If he succeeds, my ancient kingdom under the sea will be turned into a land of shadow and despair...and so will the world you know above the waves.

Link, I wish for you to help me out once more. I have an idea as to the reason that the Master Sword has become powerless.

Link, I need you to lend me your strength in this dark hour. I have a suspicion about what has caused the Master Sword to lose its power.

Let us once more go back above the ocean and revive the anti-demon power in the Master Sword!

I need for you to come with me back to the lands above the water and return the power to repel evil to the Master Sword!
