Note: I am well aware of the number of Zelda fans here. I am in no way saying Zelda actually sucks.

Why? Who knows. XP
I know why. They're fucking morons. Period. Er, I mean Steve.
It would be like me saying any game sharing the same genre with Zelda sucks merely because Zelda sucks.
HE SAID ZELDA SUCKS! LYNCH MOB HIM EVERYONE!
And I never said all rap sucks. In fact I'm listening to a rap song right now

Example
We, on this forum, write to get our messages across. Its a basic form of communication that we can all identify with. Other people however, do things differently. They communicate through their art, it doesn't matter how old or new it is, its still a message that they were trying to get across. Its wether we understand that message is what counts. Other people do this through music.
There is a song I heard last night, it was by Bob Dylan. It was probably the most poerful song i have ever heard. It was about the paper pushers that send the young men in to war and die, while they stay at home in their nice comfy houses. Bob Dylan is one of the masters of his art, and his message was being blunt, yet he got his message across.
Rap is just another way of getting that message across. So is rock, so is farting on a piece of paper and then hanging it up in an art gallery. The quality of the message has nothing to do with the medium used to get it across, just the person delivering it.
Art is just that, a person trying to get a message across. Which is communication, and the degree I shall be starting to study in two weeks.

Art is art. Whether it requires emotion and concept or if it was simply pulled out of someone's ass, the definition of art is not for you to decide. All that's necessary for art to be art is for someone to have taken the time to create it. Everything else that comes after, including interpretation, is completely subjective. I hope that we can at least agree on that.
I also take time to create my shit. Usually takes me about 10 minutes in the bathroom, not to mention the 3-4 hours it takes the food to digest in my body.
And if you think I'm kidding, I recall an 'artist' (and I lose that term sarcastically), actually having an 'art performance' in which she shit in front of a bunch of people. And called it art. It was titled "My Turd". People liked it. Thought it was 'deep' and touched on post-modern concepts. And lalalalala.
Having such a loose interpretation of art leads to people hanging empty canvases in a gallery art, or a bunch of foam cubes, or a bunch of wires hanging from the ceiling. None of which have any meaning that can be interpreted from them unless you read a fucking artists statement, and 99.99% of people (ie, everyone but the 'artist') simply just nod their heads like they understand so they don't look like fools.
It also leads to people that shake their ass and boobs, or talk about how much sex they have and how big their penis is, to call themselves artists.
Calling mainstream rap 'art' degrades the real art out there. And I don't mean the Mona Lisa or something like that, it degrades rap songs that can actually be called art.

There you have it HousesofHoly, pwned.
Look at mainstream rap. The popular stuff that makes it into the hit list, the radio stations and the music channels. Apart from Will Smith, I can't think of any rapper who doesn't cuss in virtually every song, doesn't talk about hoes, drugs, partying, bling bling and thugs.
And your comparison is moot. It would have worked if I was making claims that all music is crap and putting it all under the rap genre.
Oh. And I wouldn't call any form of popular music 'art'. Especially not rap music and pop-Britney Spears like music.
Music is culture, are you against it?
Art requires intelligence. It encourages thought and contemplation, or even emotion. Something besides primal urges. There's bad art, and then there's stuff that ranks below my feces in terms of artistic merit. It's still a form of entertainment, and it can be a good one at that, but it's not art.
[size=1]Rap does require intelligence.

Rap does require intelligence.
Very little proof of that. Most rap is just shouting, as Khuff stated. There is some rap with deep lyrics, but I'd still call it poetry.

I agree that mainstream artists make a lot of other rap artists look bad. Listen to Talib Kweli, he is a rapper who doesn't succumb to the bullshit music that Lil' Jon is promoting. What he usually says makes you think, and hey, he managed to make it out to the mainstream. Though he's not as popular as 50 Cent, sadly. There is also another artist, who is huge in the underground scene, his name is Immortal Technique and yes, he raps with a gangsta image and curses a lot(and since when do people care if someone curses?) but trust me, his music gets you thinking. He is better than 90% of the rappers out now.
And understand where rap comes from. A Death Row inmate said it like this. To think of the origins of hip hop in this culture, you have to understand the world of the struggle in America. The gritty roots of hip hop arises from a generation that feels, with some justice might I add, that they have been betrayed by those who came before them. That they are, at best, tolerated in school; feared in the streets; and almost inevitably destined for the heralds of prison. They grew up hungry, hated, and unloved. THIS is the psychic fuel that generates the anger that seems endemic in much of the music and poetry. They sense very little hope above the personal goals of wealth to climb above the pit of poverty.
