First I met the fans,

There's the problem.

Don't make the mistake of thinking I'm defending the book, here. I just don't want my time back from reading it, don't want to burn every copy I see.

I just don't think it was that bad.

I suppose, having never read the books/seen the movies(s), I can't hate Twilight too much right now. That said, I'm SO tempted to pick up the DVD from the Red Box rental after work and buy that Rifftrax tonight. XD

SOLID SNAKE IS MORE MAN THAN YOU'LL EVER BE.

LOL,:kidding:

But I don't see Metal Gear as a bad thing. At least, not compared to this.

Really Show? I've heard the House of Night series is better than Twilight.. well I'll soon find out for myself I suppose!

Zoey's just such a Mary Sue. I just did one of those online Mary Sue tests on her and got "Irredeemable-Sue. You're going to have to start over, my friend. I know you want to keep writing, but no. Just no."

Well, I don't mind, I can read anything pretty much.

Anyway, proper vampires are basically mindless zombies. You can tell them by a ruddy, bloated appearance. It's normally caused by a sudden or traumatic death, I guess. They rise from their graves at night to feast on blood from the chest of their victims, generally family members. They don't often kill, though, I don't think; or necessarily pass the vampirism on... Dig up the grave, stake, chop the head off, maybe add lemon or put the thighbones in a cross, sorted. I've only read one story with a proper traditional vampire in.

Thing is, there's no such thing as a "traditional" or "proper" vampire. Everyone's mythos is different. Every culture has their own version of the vampire, even predating our classic definition of a corpse that you cut off the head, stuff the mouth with garlic, etc.

But none of the mythos involved the popular view of vampires in modern media.

Umm I'd rather a Mary-Sue than I girl who can't do anythiiing for herself/has no backbone/whines all the time/is an idiot.

I actually so far don't mind the House of Night books all that much. Kind of a neat story anyway.

Personally just because someone else's view of vampires isn't the same as your view I don't see how anyone can judge in such a hateful manner. I like that they sparkle.. it's cool. I'd love to be sparkly.

But the ridiculousness of Twilight goes beyond the fact that its vampires are sparkly. It's that the main character is completely devoid of a shred of personality or other kinds of character development, and the relationship between her and Edward is equally vapid (not to mention that it's a terrible model of a relationship for the young'uns). Yet for some reason people love it.

I dislike Twilight because it's just bad literature and people gobble it up and think it's fantastic. It's the same reason I don't like reality shows or pop music. And it's the same reason lots of people don't like Twilight, reality shows or pop music.

Plus, sparkly vampires? Come onnn. =P

We know what the fans are like, we know what the story is like and I think it's safe to assume that it's all quite frightening. Maybe in a couple of years people will forget about the damn books and the idiocy these books have brought will wash away from the face of the planet. Or it becomes required reading in schools, which would be a worse-case scenario.

Here's a question:

If the books are such pieces of rubbish (and, having not read them, I have no opinion on the subject) why are they so popular? And among more than just the 14-15 year old girl demographic, I know a lot of my chick friends and some of my dude friends like them as well.

Its probably the same reason American Idol, Larry the Cable Guy, Digg, Coldplay, Glenn Beck, Sarah Palin, Dane Cook, etc. etc. etc. are popular. Not that I know why people like crap. Personally, I think a lot of people have bad taste. Entertainment more and more seems to cater to the lowest common denominator.

The above is true.

People flock to see films like Step Up and really dumb action flicks.

No one fucking watches Casablanca anymore. That is the best movie ever made.

People churn out crap, people enjoy crap, Twilight is crap, High School Musical is crap, Twilight School Musical is crap, crap crap crap.

Little kids are crap.

See the thing is, this is wrong.
Casablanca is still one of the most watched and loved films of all time. It has lasted us this long, and will continue to be a classic maybe forever.

You just said you loved it. I love it. Im sure 80% of the people on this forum love it, and if they dont, they havent watched it yet.

And thats just an example.

High quality and timeless productions like Casablanca have always had a big place in society.

These one hit wonder mega-flicks like Twilight, High School Musical, the da vinci code... etc: -insert more crap popular fads- will always be bested by the stuff with substance in the long run. Twilight may be huge now, but in 100 years, (assuming our civilisation is intact) millions of people will still love and watch Casablanca, while i can gauruntee Twilight will have faded into obscurity.

Basically im just saying our culture deserves a little more credit than we are giving it.

By process of natural selection, the good or memorable stuff will survive the test of time into many generations to come, while the mega-fads burn out instantly like fireworks.

Huge and awesome for one second... then... nothing.

How could you think that shimmering vampires aren't the best thing to happen to the world since the invention of reality tv?
