the rewards arent really worth it either. everything you get is slightly less powerful than everyone's original final weapons. i imagine the Time Vortex is where we find the weapons that are better than the classic final weapons

that being said, the only part i really didnt like about the Sanctum was getting the Nu, once he was on the bridge, food...

It was super easy to miss the food.

Currently I'm cleaning out the sidequests before the Black Omen.

My dudes are in the high 50s to 60s by now. Most of them have almost maxed HP and MP, and I'm just systematically vaporizing anything that stands in my path with ease.

My current powerhouse team is Frog, Crono, and Ayla. Crono and Ayla have blinding speed, and Frog has auto-haste, status immunity, double crit rate and half magic consumption. I rool everything because Frog essentially takes two turns for every one the other two get, so I have time to heal and do team-ups.

my favorite is Crono Frog and Magus.

i was upset, Lavos is a joke compared to when i fought him in the PSX version... you should have no trouble, i killed the final version in under 10 minutes if... with a high 50 low 60 party

I just wish Magus would stop being such a dick and learn some natural dual and triple tech attacks so I don't have to waste the accessory slot on a Gemstone. Maybe I'd use him then.

Arg, this game needs to get cheaper like now. XD I played part of the SNES version but I don't actually own a copy so I never got to finish it. This game is definitely on my list of "things to buy for my DS" XD

It was so worth the 40 bucks for me. Good luck finding it cheaper in the next like... 6 months.

At last this game gets a European release date! Feb 6th. Not bad considering most Nintendo games take six months to get released over here (still waiting for Kirby Super Star Ultra to get dated, let alone released).

For one thing that wouldn't fit with the personality of this character. Magus only fights on Chrono's side as the enemy's enemy is your friend.

Next to that triple techs are not that useful with the mechanics of this game. That is, one normal attack a dual tech are often more efficient, than the effort of a combined triple tech.

That still leaves the dual techs. Yep, I suppose that's from a gameplay point of view a weakness of Magus. He a decently fast/strong fighter with powerful single techs using various elements (he has Lightning 2, Fire 2 and Ice 2 next to his own shadow elemental attacks), so his inability to use dual techs is a con to compensate for his other traits.

I would disagree whole-heartedly that triple techs are not that useful.

During my fights with Lavos I'll dial up Ayla Crono and Frog's triple for about 4k damage; and a single attack with a double tech, even if the single crits, doesn't come close.

The key to winning in this game for me, I've always found to be using "Haste" immediately in battle. First, Marle casts it on herself then on me, then on Glenn (my chosen 3rd). Setting that first, I'm able to deal out the pain and recover relatively well.

For now, I'll make due with my SNES cartridge. If I need it on the go, that's what my PSP is for ;)

With the game finally out in Europe, it's time for some new first impressions methinks. I'm currently as far as the Dragon Tank boss (so not very far).

First of all, I think Chrono Trigger has some of the best implementation of graphics and music I've seen for a SNES game, rivalling even the DKC trilogy. I say "implementation of" because it's not so much the objective quality but the way it creates this world this almost utopian world; if only the forces of evil weren't up to their dastardly schemes, I might like to live there. I can't say much yet for CT's story, but what I do like is how the NPCs interact with it. Apart from talking about the story in a way that doesn't sound too forced, the little things like the man making the bell and the girl who lost her cat rises the whole experience above the norm.

PS: Just entered the dystopian future. Brilliantly designed.

The battle system is not quite so impressive, in my opinion. I like that it is simply structured, but I don't like the fact that the enemy attacks when I'm trying to make decisions (and this is despite having selected the "Wait" option). It's pain in the ass that the enemy is able to attack me twice before I can select a healing potion. I appreciate that it's more realistic, but I like taking my time, especially when it's my first playthrough.

Finally, I find the DS features make the experience worse. It just doesn't work to have the action on the top screen and the controls on the touch screen; it makes it harder to move in the game and harder to focus on the battle. That said, the extras are a great addition.

Yeah, I was just reading about Chrono Trigger on wikipedia and the battle system puts me right off. Is there an option in the game to make it a true turn-based RPG, or do you have to be quick with your choices unless the enemy smacks you repeatedly?

After fiddling with the options some more, I've realised that slowing down the battle as much as possible makes it considerably easier, even though it doesn't solve the problem completely. And to be perfectly honest, the battle system was only a minor gripe (consider that I am not a big RPG fan anyway). I wouldn't say that it kills the game by any means.

Consider the battle system a bit of extra difficulty in an otherwise far-too-easy game.

And I really liked the DS controls. I had no problem keeping track of both screens and enjoyed the extra bit of screen space it freed up in the process. The classic controls actually take a bit longer to select targets and whatnot.

Having played it some more, I'm reversing my position on the battle system. I find it to be much enjoyable than the traditional turn-based battles, and it's the main reason why, shockingly, I find the game more enjoyable than the Golden Sun games (which I thought would never be beaten thanks to the Psynergy puzzles).

Y'know what's funny?

Shortly after I bought Chrono Trigger DS, I scoured the Gamespots around my house for copies of Golden Sun and the sequel. Mine are long lost and I just... had this urge to play them. haha

I think CT and GS share a thematic connection, in that they both show a spread of different cultures reflecting the real world. CT shows different cultures through the exploration of time and GS shows different cultures through the exploration of geography.

I'm now up to Magus, who I have read is particularly tough. Wish me luck (and advice)!

Ah, Magus. That's one of the coolest parts of the game, but wait 'til you get to the ice age... everything from that point on is pure win.

I see I'm having trouble with Magus. Quick question; my squad is average Level 21. Is that enough or should I do some *shudder* level grinding before I attempt the fight?

21 shouldn't be too bad. Since it's your first time playing you might want to grind a little, but you should give the fight a few tries at your current state first. I'd recommend bringing Robo along, so you'll have access to both his and Frog's healing spells. Don't use Marle, as you need to have as many different elemental spells as possible and she and Frog share the water type.

Frog, Robo, and Crono is a decent party to have for their triple tech.

Basically, the elemental barrier thing will make him susceptible to whatever element he just casted, and once he drops his defense for his mega attack, just pound him with a triple tech. You can get two in if you're fast enough.

edit: The DS version has two extra dungeons and another ending. Depends how much you liked the game.

I plan to buy this game sometime, but maybe when I get bored of the Wii. Right now, I'm satisfied with Mario Kart. :D

Although it does look promising, I think I'll wait a few months.

They also included the animé cut scenes from the PlayStation version, I believe. Whether this is a good thing or a bad thing may depend on your opinion on Chrono Cross (a few of the scenes foreshadow Cross' storyline)

The PS1 movies can be toggled on/off, as can the DS features. The box art is included in the manual.

PS: Beat Magus. Woo! Thanks for your help!
