I got the game for Christmas, but I haven't been able to play it much. My Wii is in my brother's room (J don't have a room) along with most of my things, and most of the time I'm not allowed in there.

The first Bowser fight was one of the greatest things ever.

I'm fully aware that I've barely scraped the surface of the game though. Mm, I'm making it last. Joy.

If it's your game, you should take it and tell your brother that he can't play it unless he brings his Wii out for everyone to play. It's not fair that he's holding your property, yet he won't let you retrieve it from amongst his property.

On another note for the newcomers, press Z when skating on ice to see something... cool.

Presuming you're at college/university, take it the day before you go back. So when your brother finds out, you'll be too far away for his hissy fit to mean anything. And then what's to argue? It's YOUR game.

I don't see how choosing not to go to university makes anyone stupid. Lots of intelligent people lack common sense.

But back on topic, you really should assert the fact that you have a right to a present you received for Christmas.

Good lord is this game fun.
Spoiler : click to show/hide
The messages they send to your Wii and the swimming mechanics are pretty annoying, though.

But, Nintendo has made me proud. ;3;

I've had it for about... what, four days or so? I forget. Got it a few days after Christmas, I think, and I'm up to about 57 stars.
Spoiler : click to show/hide
The funny thing about trying to be thorough with each galaxy as you get to it is seeing a new area unlocked with every galaxy inside it already blinking "NEW!" at you. X3
Also, BumbleBee Mario is suprisingly fun. Mario is such a flaming furry.

Heh heh heh.

106 stars down. I love this game to bits. However, had to take a break to play Phoenix Wright (Trials and Tribulations), Geometry Wars Galaxies, Link's Crossbow Training, and Zack & Wiki. So many awesome games, so little time ._.

And there's nothing wrong with the swimming mechanics, once you get used to it it feels just like SM64.

The most awesome thing about swimming in SM64 was the fact that you got a free health recharge.

If there is one thing I just plain can't praise in either SM64 and Mario Galaxy, it'd be the swimming controls. They are broken, and that's a fact. With the jump and swimm-forward comands being assigned to the same button, it becomes almost impossible to get out of the water without some sort of unnesesary hassle. While the shell-riding did improve the slow, no-response feeling usually cursing Mario's swimming, having no shell flet like some cruel handicap. The swiming was a mess, and even you must admit wasn't nearly as responsive as on land.

I found the best way to do non shell swimming was just to flail the Wii remote and do the underwater spins constantly. He swims a bit faster when you do that and generally goes in the direction you want.

OH GEE, SORRY. Thanks for telling me, because I thought they were an example of the most free swimming in a video game, clearly I was wrong. Seriously, leaving Galaxy out of it for a moment, find me a game from the same era that had even half-as-decent 3D swimming controls.

With the jump and swimm-forward comands being assigned to the same button, it becomes almost impossible to get out of the water without some sort of unnesesary hassle.

I've never had any trouble leaping out of the water, especially on Galaxy when you can just flick the Wiimote or hold down the A button for a second. But it wasn't even difficult on Mario 64. Maybe you just didn't know how? o.o You have to press down on the stick and then press A. That's about it.

While the shell-riding did improve the slow, no-response feeling usually cursing Mario's swimming, having no shell flet like some cruel handicap. The swiming was a mess, and even you must admit wasn't nearly as responsive as on land.

Of course it wasn't, because it was swimming. It's meant to be a bit slower. But even then, if you Spin you end up going pretty quickly. And if you went any faster, you'd end up bumping into things all the damn time, or you wouldn't be able to precisely aim at coins and things. Yes, the shells make swimming much easier, but that's the whole point. That's like saying
Spoiler : click to show/hide
'but the Red Star makes flying much easier than normal, without it it's simply a cruel handicap!'.

Personally I have not one jot of a problem with swimming in either game. Maaaybe you just suck at it. XP

I hated swimming in those games. It isn't hard to get right; stick tilts you, button makes you thrust forward.

Yet I consistantly have problems with actually going anywhere in water in SM64. And... am I the only one who's used to the "jump" buttion making you swim straight up/jumping out of the water?

I only find swimming to be bad when I want to hit specific targets (like coins). Perhaps a targeting system would be in order, like The Legend of Zelda?

Didn't the Koopa shells kinda work like targeting systems? Even that still didn't help. Swimming in SMS just didn't seem intuitive enough for me. When I wanted to go up I went down, when I wanted to go down I went up, and getting out the water was a totally pain in the ass and I have to sometimes launch Mario like a dolphin just to get back on dry land. Actually the whole experience gave me the same disorienting feeling most FPS's on XBox give me.
