After an intensive period of brainstorming I thought I'd do another one of those "What do ya think?" topics; oh it practically reeks of originality. I'm so diabolical it hurts.

Yeah the months before Super Mario Sunshine's release had me in anticipation, okay the franchise was by now absolutely plagued with cheap spin-offs but the mainstay of the series had pretty much unmatched platforming gameplay, everyone thought this would be Shigeru Miyamoto's eagerly awaited "Mario128 project". We were way off. Now it wouldn't be fair for anyone to think it was going to be as revolutionary as Super Mario 64 but even then that GC title was such an utter disappointment (those sadists put a time-limit on riding Yoshi... yeah... what the hell were they thinking?). Years later we have Super Mario Galaxy and it's shaping up rather nicely. It'll definitely be innovative with the Wiimote and I've already seen the amazing trailers, though watching Mario in moment leaves me a little disoriented.

(here goes nothing) Do you think it'll be the greatest 3D Mario game ever? Better than SM64 even?

I think Sunshine is horribly maligned. An 'utter disappointment' is incredibly harsh to such a fun and huge game. Yes, it has flaws, much like TWW has flaws, but neither game is an 'utter disappointment'. It has a decent difficulty level and some very clever platforming sequences.

I think Galaxy will be better than Sunshine though, if only because the setting suits Mario better. It could be better than SM64, it's hard to say. If it has Bowser stages to rival the ones in SM64, I'd say yes. I love those stages. ^^

There is one depending factor here: Can I ride Yoshi? If the answer is yes, then it could be a close race to being the BEST Mario game ever. Thusly, it will have beaten the impossible-to-beat Super Mario World and even the Mighty '64.

Sunshine did have one awesome quality, and that was the sub-worlds. Hard to explain, but basically the ones that floated in space, bringing back some hardcore, classic platforming goodness. And they had the catchiest tune ever...well, those 'subworlds' seem to be playing a much much larger role in Galaxy. And that being the case, I think this could be the greatest Mario game, and easily the best game in it's genre, to date.

It seems Toad Houses return!

That's from a bunch of new screens here. Watch out for freaky bugs.

I've just fallen in love with this. I really didn't enjoy Mario Sunshine, (thanks in part to the setting) but this looks like it could bring the fun back to the 3D Mario platformers. I love how they've wrapped Mario elements and level types around these weird floaty shapes. It has that look and feel of a Mario game, much like Mario 64 did.

And levels are entered through a level select screen now?

Check this out.

The Prologue Video. It's a bit spoilerish, but probably nothing you wouldn't predict based on the fact it's a Mario game. This game puts all other Wii games to shame in the graphics department.

I haven't seen the video, but I've read about it. Sounds like a great throwback to Mario 64 and Super Mario Bros. 3.

And the Japanese site seems to implicate that there'll be three more suits (not including the Fire Flower) that we haven't yet seen. Maybe some returning classics like the Racoon suit?

From what we've seen so far, Mario Galaxy seems to be brimming with that same magic and charm that the late 80's/early 90's Mario games had. Can't bloody wait!

Man, I love this game. The intro is so awesome. The imagery is based on the original Paper Mario, yes, Paper Mario! The music that plays are wonderfully arranged versions of the Airship theme from SMB3 (actually based on a classical composition, FYI) and, strangely, the demo song from Mario Kart 64.

Awesome, awesome, awesome. There isn't enough nearly enough hype for this game given how much awesome there is in it.

I wholeheartedly agree with you. Nintendo, I'm begging you to include him as a playable role, or at least have some Yoshi planet of sorts. All these SMB3 references are too much to take in.

I've seen that giant egg in space make a 'blink-and-you'll-miss-it appearances' in the first trailer. C:

Better than over-hyped games.(Mario Sunshine, Twilight Princess...)

Other than that, just awesome. Can't wait to play it!

Mario is the ladies favourite. Japanese girls like dancing hairy men or at least that's what I think. XD When Nintendo feel the urge to make him dance, they make him dance.

and waht aws Peach holding in her hands?

Not another Bowser Jr. I hope.

Yay! The other suits have been confirmed as being:

Spoiler : click to show/hide
Starman Mario, Spring Mario, and Ice Flower Mario. But I have a funny feeling they might have at least one hidden suit that they're leaving as a surprise. Perhaps even for collecting everything?

And also!:

Spoiler : click to show/hide
Luigi's been spotted in the haunted house! Or what SEEMS to be Luigi, anyway. He looks like he might need Mario to set him free.

I'm happy Mario's still coming in November. :)

Yay. ^^ I love power-ups! They've been rather neglected in the last (approximate) decade... as in the ones in Mario 64 were temporary, they were non-existant in Mario Sunshine, and the new ones in NSMB were rather sucky imo. It's great to see Fire Mario finally appear in the 3-d series, as well as Invincible Mario in spirit (and Rainbow Mario looks way better visually). Thankfully none of them seem to be temporary like in 64... except Rainbow Mario, of course.

Luigi's seeming lack of appearance here has been one of my main complaints about Galaxy over the last few months. I really hope that it's really him. I'd be satisfied if he was just an NPC, but that would be awesome if he was playable.

The water pack sort of replaced the power-ups in Mario Sunshine. :(

I think it'd be cool if you were able to buy suits from Toad shops (just like the old games), and use them when you want to. B-)

Pretty much. You had the other two nozzles for rocketing and for speeding around instead. Which wasn't a bad thing, really. I had a LOOOOOT of fun with the speedy one. Doing laps around Delfino Island and not hitting stuff was fun.

I've heard that this game is now playable in Gamestop stores, according to here.

There's some speculation that it's the full version, but it might also just be a prerelease demonstration to iron out any last bugs that the free bug testers (i.e. you) discover.

Oh man, I've seen the trailers again, that SMB3 and SM64 Darkworld background theme music is so nostalgic. That stuff never gets old. ^___^

I dunno, but have a really good feeling about this game...it could be the Mario 128 we've all been waiting for.

God, I need that game in my house XD

Check EB Games as well. I was there today and there was a demo up (they also finally started putting controllers at the kiosk). Unfortunately, all I had time for was the opening cutscene before I had to leave.

I played the demo for a little while yesterday.
It's... different. Got dizzy when I was getting used to the controls, and strangely enough I still managed to get spun around after a while, which worries me. The demo is a very worrying thing and I hope the entire game isn't like it despite how much fun it was overall.
Spoiler : click to show/hide
Spinning by shaking the remote then kickin' the baddies is cool. :D

Oh, my, the worry that this is another Mario Sunshine. :x I'm sick of 3D Mario games that are amazing but lose the appeal after only a short while.
