Hmm. The only way to end it is for one of us to wise up and close it... or for a lesser member to get an admin involved.

Or for one of us to say GET BACK ON TOPIC. You guys are right, how about no more transvestite talk. We're talking about Roman Catholics for Death.

So...uh, yeah. Catholics should't support the death penalty.

Actually, the Catholic Church isn't totally against the death penalty - she does allow for it in certain circumstances.

I think there is a bit of leeway on the death penalty issue, although on the abortion issue, the Church is most certainly clear, and her teaching on abortion dates back to the first century (see the Didache, 2, 2: SCh 248,148, which says, "You shall not kill the embryo by abortion and shall not cause the newborn to perish.").

The Church on the Death Penalty:

Assuming that the guilty party's identity and responsibility have been fully determined, the traditional teaching of the Church does not exclude recourse to the death penalty, if this is the only possible way of effectively defending human lives against the unjust aggressor.

If, however, non-lethal means are sufficient to defend and protect people's safety from the aggressor, authority will limit itself to such means, as these are more in keeping with the concrete conditions of the common good and more in conformity to the dignity of the human person.

Today, in fact, as a consequence of the possibilities which the state has for effectively preventing crime, by rendering one who has committed an offense incapable of doing harm - without definitely taking away from him the possibility of redeeming himself - the cases in which the execution of the offender is an absolute necessity "are very rare, if not practically nonexistent."

- Catechism of the Catholic Church, paragraph no. 2267

Yep. That ability is right at your fingertips.

I just have to reach over and tap an admin (with my fingertips, where the ability lies), and then they'll do it.

I personally am not Catholic, but one of my bosses was Catholic, and he supported the Death Penalty.

His reasoning was that the Pope and Vatican were just wrong.

Catholics (though they don't like to say it) change their views on things over time. Depends on the Pope, and it depends on popular opinion of the church. So a lot of Catholics choose to have their own beliefs about their own spirituality, and they don't let it be totally controlled by the Vatican.

That's why I'm not a Catholic, even though I like Catholics. If your religion says that the Catholic Church is always right, you should actually believe that. Or you should choose another church.

Yeah I control my own faith. So there.

And I don't like this thread. It seems to be an excuse to rip on Catholics. Non-Catholics just believe what they read/hear and of it isnt true.

Aw Colt, you know I'm cool with Catholics. All I'm saying is that everyone should obey the central beliefs of their denomination.

Catholics aren't just mindless zombies following the whims of the Pope. Most of them aren't.

There's your answer to why they're inconsistent with the Catholic Church at large.

I guess it pays to be part of a denomination that allows free thought, huh? That said, I still have to respect the Catholic Church for holding on to all their traditions. Including the anti-death penalty stance.

Yeah well, actually Catholics were first..because John was a pope even though it wasn't called a pope and the prodestants branched off from the Catholics...so we pwn you, Arunma! XD

And I refuse to be a mindless zombie who believes in everything the church says. Sorry but i'm more independant than that. >_<;

Not to mention the many types of prodestants and the fact that Catholics are the largest denomination...

Actually, Catholics believe that Peter was the first Pope. John was just an apostle. In any case, you can't pwn me, because i don't believe in a pope. Ha! :P

I said Catholics weren't mindless zombies... not all of them at least.

But I wouldn't encourage you to start a topic about the differences between Catholicism and Protestantism, unless you're willing to face the storm you'd unleash...

And... it's Peter... Peter is claimed by Catholics to have been the first Pope...

Well if you want to get technical, the New Testament doesn't mention the word "catholic." And "catholic" (with a small c) simply means "universal." Protestants also believe in one catholic church; we just don't think it has to be based in Rome (or anywhere else).

Protestantsim is also a basic movement to get back closer to the first century church than what the Roman Catholic Church had become (cause let's face it... Catholics do a lot of stuff that the first century church didn't)

Yes, and how can you have a Pope if the Roman Catholic Church didn't technically exist until Constantine?

True. Catholics point to an "unbroken chain of popes." On the other hand, many believe that Constantine was the first pope.
