Yeah I never wear shorts unless I'm working out or am too lazy to deal with jeans (about 4-5 days/year). Otherwise it's a nice pair of fitted jeans and 4 days out of 5 a button down shirt. Every once in awhile I wear a t-shirt, but I just feel like it's too sloppy.

Also, I never have less than two buttons unbuttoned. Anything else just feels restricting. Also, the V formed by the contrast of my shirt with my pasty flesh subtly increases how broad my shoulders look.

And I wear boots every day. Unless I'm wearing something nice. In which case, heel boots are perfect business casual:

Always put thought into your appearance. Always always always. You never know when you're going to meet a potential new employer, employee, business contact, or significant other, and you want to make sure that you understand the effect that that first impression, based entirely on looks, is going to have. Whether you follow the rules or break them, to really succeed in the adult world you have to KNOW them, first, and make your decision carefully.

Dressing nice makes you feel better about yourself as well. On test days my friend and I always used to get dressed up.. "You look good, you feel good, you do good."

Back to Kissy - because I really want to weigh in on this - I think the main problem is that you're not a teacher yet, you're a student. Therefore you need to dress more professional on a daily basis to impress parents, employers and colleagues. Unfortunately it's not all about how well you do now, it's how you present yourself and how you well you do.

Money - Do you have favourite stores that you know you can go to and find stuff? Sign up for e-mails. They usually send coupons and let you know when sales are on. Plus you US people have awesome sales and cheaper clothes, the hardest part is just searching to find them. It will be worth it though.

... I like my skinnies :P .

Well what kind of sneakers?

http://media.kohls.c...00&op_sharpen=1

This thing is resisting image tags for some reason. Phone posting is driving me crazy. UGH.

Those are not nice sneakers. Those are food service sneakers you see cooks wear so they don't slip and injure themselves.

Yeah Sean, those aren't nice enough. DJ, yours are alright, although I think they are a bit on the clunky side, but not unforgivably so.

Let's see...I mean there are a ton of options for a nice everyday shoe so I'm just gonna throw some out there. You probably want to pick between brown/tan or black depending on which colors you wear more.

1. Desert boots (example). These look fugly by themselves but magically make more sense once they are on your feet. (Actually I feel this way about a lot of men's shoes.) I see these more in shades of brown than in black. Sort of a trend but I think a pretty flexible style.

2. Chelsea boots (example). These are more classic than above. I think they look better on narrower feet though.

3. Some kind of moccasin (example). These are lighter and more summery imo. I see a lot of guys wearing them without socks and with shorts.

That's not to say all sneakers are awful; they are more casual though, whereas the above shoes could also be semi-professional/formal.

Here's some example of nicer-looking sneakers: example 1, example 2. Basically just something low-top that is almost all one color, not too many details. This is about as detailed as you want to get; that one is already super casual.

Haha why? And Zach I really do think they look better once they're under your jeans.

that moccasin is what we would call a deck show back when I worked at the show store. made for a boat deck. the Chelsea boot is nice though. and the Adidas samba, classic. can't go wrong there. personally I like skechers fashion athletics. their mens citywalk shoes are my favorite men's shoes. not meant to actually be worn for any sort of athletics, but they look great.

It's threads like these that remind me how much I love STEM fields.

I, too, am confused as to the appeal of desert boots. Them things look heinous.

Jasi's right that they obviously look better under jeans, but god help you when you sit down the pant legs ride up.

Yup forgot. So here's two pics with my hand for scale. My pjs are pulled tight, and I decided to measure them. 24 inches each, 40 together. My waist is only 35 ;_;

Those thighs are pretty juicy.

I kind of like Steel's preference for boots with outfits. Those particular ones aren't my taste but there have been times I've looked down and noticed a good pair of boots and thought to myself "Shit, dem boots to boot!" But I must contest that casual shoes can be utilized for more "proper" outfits if need be. It's all about how they work with the total outfit.

I wear Olive Chuck Taylor Hi-Tops, I like the color in my total wardrobe so I tend to pull of that David Tennant/10th Doctor vibe slightly whenever I match it up with Dark Blue and Green colored shirts and pants. I also have a pair of Adidas 80s Campus shoes that go with my black and white (with occasional red) outfits, I have a striped top to go along with the shoes so it actually looks decently alright. As far as fancier shoes go, I wear Chukka Boot/Shoe when I need a decent dress shoe but I break out these suckers whenever I go to fancier events (in tag because I don't know how to resize images I find and post):

Spoiler

I'm a teacher* and I wear jeans.

Results are what matter, not my trousers.

Although, by that logic, I don't need trousers at all. Hmmm.

*IT teacher, which is barely teaching.

This brings me to the point of being an empty suit. Vet has the right idea, when push comes to shove it's important that what you bring to the table is a reliable set of skills that bring out good results. But to come back to what Steel mentioned earlier, good clothes are important for being professional because they, much like the rest of your outward appearance, show other people who you are at a glance.

TL;DR People are fickle bastards so dress well and know what you are doing, don't half ass it being one or the other. Don't feel you need to conform to a certain style all the time though, it's sometimes possible to make what you have work in the right outfit.

This comes to mind after reading this thread:
