Misirlou - Dick Dale and his Del-Tones, from Greatest Hits 1961 - 1976

Yeah, Pulp Fiction, whatever, it was good before that movie used it. I actually kinda like this version he did later, to be eprfectly honest, but meh, all in all a standby classic of rock. Catchy, short, and sweet.

The Ecstacy of Gold (Ennio Morricone) - Metallica, from We All Love Ennio Morricone

Fourth page, fourth Metallica....sorta. Anyone who's even remotely glanced at any piece of media that even slightly references some kind of Western trope or cliche has undoubtedly heard some song that's either directly from the spaghetti westerns or a sound alike of those songs, and we all have the brilliance of Ennio Morricone to thank for that. Even now, anything even rmeotely "cowboy" or "western" will do soemthing that references those movies, including the music. This was a pretty cool tribute album a few years ago where a ton of artists did their versions of his songs, and of course Metallica fit in fine since they'd been using The Ecstacy of Gold for their intro for years now. It's an awesome piece already now with the power of Metallica, so of course it rocks. Oh, should also add that's it's notable because James actually plays lead in this one - Kirk defintiely has the style and whatnot, but I'm pretty sure he's probably more technically proficient in terms of playing. Definitely one of if not the best rhythm guitarists out there today,a nd maybe ever.

Dragula  Rob Zombie, from Hellbilly Deluxe

a.k.a. The Song that was in every single video game with a licensed soundtrack in the early 2000's. Seriously, off the top of my head it was in Jet Grind Radio, Gran Turismo, Twisted Metal, Tony Hawk, Madden, and a whole lot of others. Anyway, Rob Zombie can be kidna meh more often then not, but the songs I like I do dig, even if they're not super special.

Paradise City - Guns N' Roses, from Appetite For Destruction

Well, it's GNR. Axl's a dick and they weren't around for very long pretty much ebcause of it, but there's a lot of good catchy iconic songs in there. Went with something slightly less obvious, though calling it a minor hit would be a lie. Awesome for that driving playlist I keep mentioning over and over again, and I smiled when I first booted up Burnout Paradise and heard this song as the theme and not some modern hip hop or rap song. All righty.

Drink Up, Me Hearties - Hans Zimmer, from Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End

Ever since that first (and still best) Pirates of the Caribbean movie, the music has been one part of the series that I've completely and thouroughly enjoyed. First thign I did when I left the theatre (besides being astoudned at how a movie abse don a theme park ride turned out so great) was stop by Best Buy and buy the soundtrack, which si something I've done and gone out of my way to do for the following movies and intend to do for the maybe 5th one unless they just flat out stop doing physical discs. Granted, the later movies had their share of problems, but the music has always been excellent, from Klaus Badeldt's oriignals core and to his mentor Hans Zimmer and his associates taking it and expanding it beyond for the other movies. He's a Pirate of course is the iconic theme, and the version used here in the third movie is my personal favorite. While I like the Dead Man's Chest version intertwined with the Kraken theme and the Spanish guitar flavor added to the On Stranger Tides one, I just have a thing for Hoist the Colors from the thrid movie. Mixing it with the theme for the end credits was awesome through and through, and I enjoy it.

Surfing With The Alien - Joe Satriani, from Surfing With The Alien

Talk about being a Guitar Hero. Way too many instrumentalists fall into the trap of just playing fast or hitting a lot of notes without any regard for melody or technique, and I'm glad Satriani is one of the ones to not fall into that pitfall. There's probably plenty more guitar players in here in the future, figured I'd start with one of my favorites.

The One I Love - R.E.M., from Document

Hey look, R.E.M. For a band supposedly fitting and wedged into a "sound" they sure have a pretty wide variety of sounds, though naturally I'm a bit more partial to the stuff that sounds like this. Nothing much here, just enjoy - though I love/am disturbed by how many couples use this as "their song" who clearly never thought about the lyrics because this and "Better Man" by Pearl Jam are the last songs you want to use as a foudnation for any sort of relationship.

The Extreme - Nobuo Uematsu, from Final Fantasy VIII Original Soundtrack

Maybe it's because of the overly exagerated negative stigma the game it comes from has due to the internet and the nature of bandwagoning, or because it came directly after One Winged Angel and, before that, Dancing Mad. Or maybe because the villainess it was attatched to was completely underutilized despite being a potentially great idea if used differently (which describes FFVIII overall, really...). Whatever the case, I always thought this was a criminally underappreciated Final Battle theme. I would love for the Distant Worlds tour to do a proper full version of this song because it would be amazing to hear the entirity with an orchestra and choir. The Black Mages version is interesting and cool, but it's not quite the same. This pretty much goes for all Final Fantasy games, but whatever issues the game had (both real and imagined) the soundtrack was definitely a bright spot for all except those who looked for ways to put the game down. Actually, I remember an old list by a bunch of FFVII fangirls that had reasons why VIII was a worse game, and while they stumbled onto a handful of real ones (deranged pacing, quickly loses focus or is misfocused on what it should've been, badly entered plot elements) most of them was stuff like "There's too much CGI, it's not special anymore" or "They made the characters more realistically proportioned, it takes the imagination away from the player" and other stuff that's msotly reaching.

Anyway, regardless of my affinity for the game, this is a good song from beginning to end. So are Ultimecia's other two songs as well.

Not much time, so cheap and easy pick. It's ZZ Top, and it was inevitable that I'd have to pick a song from them anyway, so why not. Still an essential rock band. For the record, La Grange is a nice little town, mostly.

Venice Rooftops (SCV Remix) - Jesper Kyd, from Soul Calibur V Original Soundtrack

It was already a well done and catchy piece in Assassin's Creed II, but the remix for Ezio's guest appearance in Soul Calibur V is pretty sweet. Doesn't ruin the melody or pace of the original at all but gives the added punch to fit in with the fighting game style. It probably helps that Jesper Kyd himself remixed his own piece for the game, so it works.

Hell March (Symphonic Mix Version) - Frank Klepacki, originally from Command & Conquer: Red Alert 1, 2, & 3

Oh Command & Conquer, such a great selection of music, especially from the Red Alert subseries. Hell March especially has been an iconic and fist pumping theme for all the games, and since I couldn't decide which version to post up, I just put up the live concert version Klepacki and his band does whenever they play with an orchestra, which is kind of a mix between Hell March, HM2 and HM3. Kinda wish there was a studio recorded version or at least a professionally done one since it's all only available in bootlegs. Oh well. For the Motherland!

Batman Beyond Main Title - Kristopher Carter, from Batman Beyond: The Soundtrack

This show had no right to be as good as it was. A futuristic version of a hero set in a cyberpunk future where everything is darker and edgier, and is hip and young and goes to raves and has arguments with authority figures? It shouldn't have worked. Yet it did, and it's as much a part of the DCAU as its predecessor show. By toeing the line between respecting and honoring what came before while building its own universe in the "present" setting, it ended up doing good, even if it wasn't everyone's cup of tea. At the very least, this opening theme was catchy and badass when I first saw it, and it still is. I'll always prefer the original tune, but this is a perfect opening for the show, to the point where it was used as a leitmotif in episodes of Justice League (where appropriate) as much as the BTAS and STAS themes were.

Cantata Mortis & God In Fire - Takeheru Ishimoto & the Kidneythieves, from Dissidia duodecim 012 Original Soundtrack

Before anyone says anything, yes it's techncially two songs, but it's one track on the soundtrack and during the Feral Chaos Boss Battle it's from both play together and even loop, so there. ANyway, most people really only think both Dissidia games are only good for music rearrangements, but the original stuff is great as well. The last bit of the already awesome end credits medley is great, as is this song. A lot of people find the transition between big grand gothic choir to rock from someAmerican band jarring and off putting, but I kinda like it, probably due in no small aprt to my being used to this sort of thing from way too many robot anime and other things I saw when younger. Totally screams "FINAL BATTLE" all the way through, and it's cool.

Black Escaflowne - Yoko Kanno, from Escaflowne: A Girl in Gaia/The Movie Original Soundtrack

So, Yoko Kanno is awesome. Duh. Not just for her cool jazzy or future-y stuff like from Cowboy Bebop or GITS either, but her orchestra stuff is equally amazing, and I've been a fan since this very anime. The show of course is known for the Ominous Latin Chanting Theme Song power up for Van and Escaflowne, so what could the movie do to possibly top it? Basically make it darker and more gothic and bam, Black Escaflowne. Movie itself is fine too, quite a bit different from the show but still decent in its own right, just typical problems of being a lot shorter then a 26 episode anime and thus can't introduce everyone as well.

New Fang - Them Crooked Vultures, from Them Crooked Vultures

I love it when Dave Grohl "takes a break," mostly because he ends up playing in other bands or, in a couple cases like this, starts an entirely different one. It was a pretty cool group for what it did, and I liked how it didn't feel beholden to follow the typical Verse-Chorus-Verse-Chorus pattern most songs have, but it didn't do it just for the sake of it either. Besides, a group made up of parts of the Foo Fighters, Queens of the Stone Age and, of course, Led Zeppelin? I hope the talk about wanting to do a second album is more true then just typical required PR speak.

Not that it would be bad if anyone of them would rather focus on their actual bands.

Dust to Dust - Masahashi Hamauzu, from Final Fantasy XIII Original Soundtrack

After about a year and three months, I finally picked up on Final Fantasy XIII again over the weekend - and prior to that, my last playthrough was in May of 2010. Anyway, I powered on through Chapter 11, maxed my Crystarium as much as I could at that point, and am currently 1/3rd through Chapter 12, so I might actually finish now, finally. Anyway, along the way one particular spoileriffic level really stood out to me. For everything this game does horribly wrong, music and graphics are not among them. The game itself is gorgeous and the sprawling wide (and most importantly) bright and COLORFUL vistas you see (especially on Gran Pulse) still makes it one of the absolute prettiest games on the PS3. Hell, now at the end of the console's lifespan, I find that this game (from 2010) and Metal Gear Solid 4 (from frickin' 2008) are still the prettiest games on it, which is crazy. Anyway, I've put up a song before, but I opted to put up the music from the level I was refering to. Spoiler free for the few people who care, but the piece, plus the setting sun in the level and atmosphere was beautiful - extremely gorgeous. It's just too bad the rest of the game isn't up to snuff.

Ah well....

It's big, it's epic, and it's bombastic without being overly noisy, and it does all this with the piano as its main inturment, which is cool.
