....or, DJ DJ's DJs. DJ3 if people feel pretentious. This will lean very, very heavily on alternative rock, classic rock, and soundtracks, but there'll be a random odd one out every now and then. Now, what to start with.....

Playlist Links - Hey, I felt like it, so here's the YouTube Playlist. Not complete because it's a lot of songs, but I'll get caught up.....eventually.

Enter Sandman - Metallica, from Metallica

Biggest hit and most obvious choice for one of their songs, but meh, whatever, it's still a great song. We'll go from here.

Burnin' For You - Blue Öyster Cult, from Fire of Unknown Origin

Song I've always liked the mood and feel of, and something I like playing just sitting around at sunset in the summer, hanging out quietly.

Spoonman - Soundgarden, from Superunknown

It was a toss up between this and Black Hole Sun for today, and I woke up in an unusually good mood, so this won out. Yay for grunge and alternative rock! Whatever the state of modern "rock" music, I'm glad to have a local station that definitely plays the new stuff but is pretty stubborn about having half of its daily playlist be the stuff I grew up on. Rock on.

Wish - Nine Inch Nails, from Broken

Not really a big NIN fan, to be honest,t hough I like the style Trent Reznor helped to bring out and about. I was never nearly angry enough to like them, but something about this song is catchy to me. Also, it amuses me to no end that a song that has the term "fist fuck" in it won a Grammy.

Pride and Joy - Stevie Ray Vaughan and Double Trouble, from Texas Flood

I think, as a(n adoptive) Texan I'm required to post a song from Stevie so why not. One of the greatest guitar players of all time whose time with us was cut short, a tragedy made even moreso since it was due to something that wasn't substance abuse. I was going to go for another song, but hell, this one's still catchy so why the heck not. A classic through and through.

Bridge Burning - Foo Fighters, from Wasting Light

Always been a big fan of the Foo Fighters, though i kinda lost track of buying the albums after There is Nothing Left to Lose and went after singles instead (though that has since been rectified). When they announced Wasting Light I was eager to dive back in, and was not disappointed. Love this song, and it's nice to see that rock still has its fighters and representatives that do it justice in this current landscape of pop and R&B. Great, energizing song and good start to an awesome disc.

The Lost World - John Williams, from The Lost World: Jurassic Park Score

I always felt that, regardless of how you felt about the movie itself and how the original Jurassic Park Main Theme is incredibly awesome in and of itself, The Lost World had a pretty nice score. The main theme that the always wonderful John Williams made for Isla Sorna/Site B is pretty damn awesome and incredibly fitting to the idea of the movie. An island where dinosaurs reclaimed a small patch of Earth for themselves and these big, majestic creatures roam free in a world that hadn't been seen in millions of years.

Admittedly, most of them shouldn't even be seen in the same time period, but I digress.

Always loved the theme and it always gets me amped up to go hiking or exploring or do something in nature. Similar to how Jurassic Parks' excellent score was overshadowed by the also incredibly awesome score for Schindler's List that year, Lost World was passed over because of Amistad and its own predecessor's nostalgia. When I was little I'd insist we stick this cassette into the car radio whenever we headed to some of the state parks around here that are Alligator havens because that was the closest I'd get to the real deal. Ah well, enjoy the slight change in pace.

Forever - In This Moment, from The Dream

While I kinda find most of In This Moment's songs a little too over-the-top for me, I dig this one quite a bit. Rocks pretty well, and hey, girl rockers are either completely awful or awesome, and she's more for the latter, at least in this song. Kinda lost track of them sometime before the third album so I need to make a point to check it and the fourth ones out.

The Warrior - Scandal, from The Warrior

Before anyone says anything, this is the day that I lost someone...very important to me a few years ago, and I suppose I should put up a favorite song of hers. Not her absolute favorite, mind you, but all the same, if everyone has an 80's song they love despite what everyone else says, this was it for her. Anyway, I kinda dig it, and I understand more then most others why this was such a favored song. Though I suppose some of the other songs she liked say the same thing in a better way, but meh, I felt like the 80's today.

Less sappily chosen songs return tomorrow.

Weatherman - Dead Sara, from Dead Sara

Yeah, another girl rocker fronted band. Not intentional, but you can't blame me. I'm a little torn on them - stuff like this is great and awesome, but their softer stuff goes in the polar opposite direction and sneaks into the modern style of rock I'm not entirely fond of. Still, they're relatively new so I'm keeping an eye out. I also like her voice and while it's not super unique, there's jsut a bit in there that lets her stand out. Good stuff.

The Goddesses' Symphony, Movement IV: A Link to the Past - Koji Kondo, Arr. Chad Seiter, Perf. San Francisco Symphony Orchestra

I've gushed about the Symphony of the Goddesses' tour enough in my old thread, so I'll keep it brief. It's unfortunate there's no studio recording version of this because, while I have my nostalgia goggles on, this is probably the best of the four movements, hitting all the alleged golden notes just the right way to get people who played the game to react accordingly. Hopefully, they'll release Wind Waker HD with a volume 2 of the CD that Skyward Sword came with just to have this on a CD, and I'm also hoping that Season 2 of the tour will add a bunch of new songs. Little long, but worth it if you liked LttP.

Seven Nation Army Remix - The White Stripes, Remix by The Glitch Mob

So, this song was overplayed to heck and back when it came out, but this is a pretty sweet remix of it. I dig it a lot more than the original, to be honest, and I'm not usually a fan of this sort of rearrangement. Heard it first in the GI Joe Retaliation trailers and just had to get it.

One of my absolute favorite bands of all time, from the day a friend of mine hnaded me this weird CD called Brown from the Christian bookstore, through their hey day in the mainstream and 'till now. A lot of passion and energy in their songs, and it's amazing they can sound so great with so many varied influences, from metal, to rap, to reggae. Awesome stuff, and I still love'em.

Ties That Bind - Alter Bridge

Yeah, it's basically Creed with a different singer, but they're also so much more badass (sometimes). I still think Mark Tremonti is a criminally underrated guitar player, and songs like this keep me a reasonable fan of the band. It's clean but heavy, and really gets in your face with the power and strength. With Creed occasionally coming back together and Myles Kennedy being busy with Slash nowadays, it'll be sad if this band is gone.

Diamond Eyes (Boom-Lay Boom-Lay Boom) - Shinedown, from The Sound of Madness Deluxe Edition

Embarassing admittance - in my head, this is totally a Dark Quill music video. That means nothing to most people, but yeah, I really like this song in the same way a little kid might like the theme song to his/her favorite cartoon. Anyway, I like Shinedown, they're nothing special but they do what they do fine and I can't fault them there at all. Brett looked a lot better with a beard though, if I may say so.

Telemann Sinfonia from Trio in A Minor - Georg Philipp Telemann

...so, why is it I can only find this piece done by school orchestras anyway? All the same, I love Telemann's sonatas and sinfonias, and it all stems from this being one of the first "real" pieces we learned in orchestra. No more sissy stuff like Nursery Rhymes and whatnot, we were delving into the real deal. While my short lived student career as a violinist went by too quickly (even if it was the entirity of Middle and High school, technically) and we definitely hit quite a few more heavy hitters in that time, this one always holds a special place in my heart, both out of nostalgia and because....hey, it's just good stuff. I can still play my part from memory whenever I pull out the violin. I wonder...

While I prefer Metallica, Slayer, and even Anthrax over them, I certainly don't dislike Megadeth at all. This is one of the greats, though it's also a bit obvious. Answers - Nobuo Uematsu, performed by Susan Calloway, from Distant Worlds: Final Fantasy: Returning Home (Originally from Final Fantasy XIV Online)

For whatever numerous problems the game had and still has, one thing FFXIV has going for it is definitely music, being the first game in the series in awhile fully scored by Nobuo Uematsu. I'm going with the concert version because while I like the OST version fine, with its somewhat over-the-top hair metal guitars in the background, the fully orchestrated version here is the way I first ran into the song when the Distant Worlds tour came by here the second time 'round, and Ms. Calloway was here to sing. Really, really great, and emotionally powerful song that she completely owns, and after the last few Uematsu penned theme songs for the games were only okay (though by no means bad), this one's just great.

Also, fun fact: every single audience I can find on Youtube falls for the false ending and begins to cheer before the conductor drops his arms. I've aired my grievences about that many times already in my symphony viewing threads, but it happens so often to this particular song I'm kinda amused by it. It does make me wish they'd do a studio recorded version of this particular, erm, version of the song though, since the soundtrack and music video are of the in-game one. Ah well, enjoy, the girl's got range and she shows it well here.

Personal Jesus - Johnny Cash, from American IV: Man Comes Around, originally by Depeche Mode

Hey, Johnny Cash. Besides being a brilliant performer throughout his entire career, it's also a prime example of how a different singer doing a cover of a song can completely and utterly change the meaning. Hurt, of course, is the most obvious/triumphant example of this in action, but it shows up here as well.

Flight of the Valkyries - originally by Richard Wagner, arranged by Jim Johnston, from WWE Singles

Yes, it's a wrestler's entrance theme, but screw it, the original piece is already iconic and a masterpiece as it is, so why not do a rock version? It's not better, but the story behind it is kinda amusing. He originally came out to a generic rock background song before switching to the proper version of Ride of the Valkyries. Management deemed it "boring" (Booooo!!!!!) and forced him to take a generic piece of "epic" music - literally, it's stock music by Three Steps From Hell for trailers and whatnot. That kidna fell flat so they compromised, and he worked with the WWE's in-house music guy to do this version, and it's pretty sweet.

Ya know, Social D isn't exactly one of the big favorite bands in my life, but I've always dug'em and have an affinity for their sound. Man I wish there was a clean non-gamerip version of this song because I love this cover. Most are only kinda okay, but this one rocks. Of course the Stones version is classic and always the best, but given this song's palcement in th game it's awesome and pumps you up to take care of business by any means necessary. I kinda keep thinking this would be a sweet flash mob song provided you get people playing the isntruments to show up along with the singers and dancers. If I were extremely rich and bored I'd probably try to get it done downtown in Tranquility Park or whereabouts. Anyway, there ya go.

What I Got (Reprise Version) - Sublime, from Sublime

Saints Row the Third got it right - this is an exceptionally catchy and easy song to have everyone in the car sing along to while driving. Doing the reprise version up because I kinda like this one better then the regular old one, but either way, it's good. Real and unfortunate shame that the lead singer did what he did. Way too many people die of drugs or other substance abuse issues and other freak accidents, going down that way is just a downer, to put it lightly. Anyway...
