Risk seems to be drawing to a close... Or at least, there's only a few people left. So I thought maybe I'd start up a board game! I've looked through my collection, and found one that seems fairly ideal to be played online - there's no real limit on the number of people that can play, there's a strict turn order where everyone moves at once rather than having to wait for people, and it doesn't have too much randomisation or complicated calculations. Obviously, the game is the Hugry Hippos game!

Go!

I kid, I kid... Actually, I found this:

pic1437568_md.jpg

The game of running your own farm! You follow the trials and tribulations of a small farm throughout the year, aiming to maximise your profit by deciding what crops and animals to farm and watching out for hazards.

Like I say, any number can play; so, to sign up, I simply need you to decide a name for your farm, and if you want to you can draw or find a picture to represent it. The official boards look a little like this:

post-147-0-27829400-1363797994.jpg

Once enough people have signed up, we can begin with January, Week One. (Seems sensible).

I've never played simfarm, but sure!

Maybe it's like Monopoly with sheep and cows? Not really...

The box says it's for three players and up.

It's pretty unintensive, though; most of the events are automatic. The only real places to makes choices are in deciding which starting animals and crops you want to buy, deciding when to sell animals, and bidding on new animals in the auctions that crop up occasionally. Other than that you just have to hope your calves aren't all struck down by ringworm, or your tractor doesn't break down, or what have you.

What are the odds of a roll resulting in your livestock staging an uprising? I'm weary of such things. <.<

Weary? So, you're tired of it happening? Glad I don't live in Texas... :P

Last chance for sign ups! (Well, you could still join in week 2, but beyond that is pretty much the limit.)

Okay! Let's begin!

Week One is basically just setting up, so it gives me a chance to explain the rules.

Your goal is to make as much profit as possible. Each farmer starts the year with £1,500, 60 cows, 50 ewes, 16 sows and 2 horses. At the end of the year, any stock you have in excess of this you sell for money; any stock you have less of than the starting amount, you need to buy back up to the right value. Then once you've equalised your money out you can see how much you made/lost. As you can see, it's best not to dip below these starting values if you can help it.

At any point you might not have enough money to pay a debt (like wages, or food bills, or what have you). If that happens, you have to sell stock at bankruptcy prices until you're debt free; this is very bad for you, as you get less than half the list value for animals this way. Try to avoid it!

So, here's Card One:

STARTING STOCK AND CASH AND CROPPING RETURN

Each farmer receives 60 cows, 50 ewes, 16 sows and two horses, and £1,500 in money, and the remainder of the stock and cash is put in the auction and the bank.
Each farmer receives a card representing 100 acres of roots, hay and pasture, and in turn chooses his crops for the remaining ten fields of ten acres each that he is farming, and obtains cards for them from the Auction Ring.

Okay! So, here's your first choice; which crops do you want to grow this year? Each farmer has 10 fields to grow crops in, and you can split them however you wish amongst Wheat, Oats, Barley and Potatoes. For example, I could grow 3 fields of potatoes, 4 of oats, 1 wheat and 2 barley. Or whatever. A word of warning! Potatoes give back the most money, but require a higher initial outlay; I think you end up bankrupt by week 3 if you try to grow more than 5 fields of them, in fact. And, of course, a bad harvest could ruin the crop and leave you heavily in debt. So, in terms of most risk/reward to least risk/reward, the crops are basically ranked potatoes, barley, oats, wheat.

You'll have to pay for the seeds, fertiliser, harvesting machines and so on later, yes, but at this point in time you're just choosing which you want. The actual expenses crop up later in the year - for instance, you don't buy the seeds for the wheat, oats and barley until the end of february. Seed potatoes and manure have to be bought next week, though!

Okay, let's get this road on the show! Time for week two!

SEED AND FARMYARD MANURE

Seed. Purchase seeds for your clover leys on 30 acres for £100, which you pay to the bank. Purchase your seed potatoes at a cost of £15 for each acre which you are planting, and pay the money to the bank.

Farmyard Manure. You require £10 worth of "F.Y.M." for each acre of roots and potatoes that you are growing this year. Purchase this from the outgoing farmer, and pay the money to the bank.

Okay, so, maths time!

Kisseena pays £100 for clover seeds and £150 for 10 acres worth of seed potatoes, and then £200 worth of manure to fertilise the potatoes and roots. Leaving £1,050.
Canas pays £100 for clover seeds and £150 for 10 acres worth of seed potatoes, and then £200 worth of manure to fertilise the potatoes and roots. Leaving £1,050.
Hana pays £100 for clover seeds, and then £100 worth of manure to fertilise the roots. Leaving £1,300.
Jasi pays £100 for clover seeds and £300 for 20 acres worth of seed potatoes, and then £300 worth of manure to fertilise the potatoes and roots. Leaving £800.
Sir Deimos pays £100 for clover seeds and £150 for 10 acres worth of seed potatoes, and then £200 worth of manure to fertilise the potatoes and roots. Leaving £1,050.

I'll update the numbers in the first post each time I update.

Sorry to triple post, but it's probably best to get to the next card with a decision on... Which is number three! Time for the sping auctions!

(Lightning edit - yes, I am skipping to the next round.)

SPRING AUCTION

Dealers are offering high prices for first-class dairy cattle. Farmers can sell up to five cows if they want to for £65 each.

Sale of Stock, by Auction with Reserve:
1 cow, with reserve £65.
1 sow, with reserve £35.
2 cows, with reserve £130.
1 horse, with reserve £40.
1 cow, with reserve £65.

So, several things for you to do here! First, decide if you want to sell any cows - you can sell up to five, and you'll receive £65 for each one you sell.

Second, decide if you want to buy any of those lots. The reserve means that they won't be sold unless they reach at least that price - so think of it as a minimum bid. If you want to buy any of the animals up for auction here, post which lot you're bidding on and how much you bid - e.g. "I'll bid £130 for the third lot."

If someone has already bid on a lot, you'll obviously have to bid higher than them if you want to win it - e.g. "I'll bid £140 on lot 3." You can keep bidding as much as you like. Whoever has the highest bid by the next time I update will win the lot.

If no one bids on a lot, no one gets it, obviously.

A little bit of tactics advice! In spring, animals like cows and sows have their babies - so the more cows and sows you have, the more babies you'll get!
