I don't pay a ton of attention to Natures because it involves catching multiples/breeding, neither of which particularly appeal to me.

But in the next update, I show off that Nidoking's ability is Defiant. His other option is Poison Touch, so I think I got pretty lucky.

He also doesn't learn Earth Power in the hack! Which is kind of a bummer.

Chapter 24 - I Have ADD

Posted Image

N strategy. I learned quite quickly that the littlebit of health from Leftovers didn't outweigh my need to murder stuff faster.

Posted Image

oh but wait what's over here

Posted Image

[Baseball & steroids joke.]

Posted Image

I like guard NPCs. They only fight you at night time! And they usually only rock dogs.

Posted Image

I also rock dogs. ;d

Posted Image

Gojira puts his feet into faces.

Posted Image

Braviary is one of my favorite Pokemon.

Too bad it evolves like a dragon.

Posted Image

woah woah put that away I will sick a giant purple murderbeast on you so fast

Posted Image

...but you aren't moving?

Posted Image

pew pew pew

Posted Image

I rolled with a Druddigon in my first playthrough.

Want a dragon who isn't useless until level 60?!

BUY A DRUDDIGON! :rainbow:

I'm sort of scared of random NPCs just rollin with dragons though.

Posted Image

And by scared I mean I have a new Ice attack.

Posted Image

Gojira's got Defiant. If any of his stats get lowered, even evasion or accuracy, his attack stat raises two levels.

So Intimidate procs Defiant and gives me +1 attack before the battle even begins. I love Intimidate.

Posted Image

I love a world where everyone's got starters. Socialism. :linkn_n:

Posted Image

Oh jeez. Random trainers with dragons is already coming true.

Posted Image

I don't often bother paralyzing stuff unless I plan to catch it. But I don't trifle with no dragons.

Posted Image

Signal Beam has been so great on Queso. I never really realized how useful of an attacking type Bug is.

Posted Image

Yeah it's pretty strong with Queso's solid attack stats.

Posted Image

I usually ease up when opponents are near death and use a weaker attack with more PP, because I am frugal to a fault.

Posted Image

This game is breaking me of that habit.

Posted Image

He's got a bunch of dragons.

Posted Image

Shelgon is a hilarious concept to me.

Posted Image

YOUR HELMET BODY WON'T SAVE YOU

Posted Image

Also there was a Zweilous.

I weep for my prospects if I'm caught without an Ice attack if things keep progressing like that.

Posted Image

Look at these here bitchin stats. After he evolved, Cool Ranch is either first or second in every stat but speed. He's a wee bit slow.

Posted Image

Posted Image

Mothims are cool. That's it.

Posted Image

Yeah that's right I heal mid-battle too don't judge

Posted Image

I do miss those few points of defense. But mmm that attack.

Posted Image

Marvelous!

Posted Image

Marvelous!

Posted Image

Extra heavy backpack.

Posted Image

pfffffff Dig, really?

Posted Image

SHOCKING

Posted Image

He's got a Porygon, which must be a great for... hiking...

Posted Image

He's trying so hard to beat me.

Except Gojira is immune to electricity.

C'mon, Hacker, this is your improved AI?

Hey, Mr. Backpacker, have you ever ran into

Posted Image

BIGFOOT? :honor:

Posted Image

Really Stantler? Intimidate? You're a deer!

Posted Image

h-hey, that's my job

Posted Image

Welcome to the Hacker's favorite new area of the game. He specifically mentions how proud of the encounter table he is.

I don't have waterfall, so I can't do quite everything, but let's see what we can dig out.

Next time.

Chapter 25 - Lostlorn Forest: The Hunt for a Legendary

Posted Image

Lostlorn Forest isn't all that special in vanilla. It's home to a mute lady in a trailer.

I think she's a Zorua or something dumb and event-based that a normal player will never see.

Only Peking can learn Calm Mind. He's a physical attacker, so that's sort of a bust.

Posted Image

Bronies.

No trainers in here. All wild pokemon. Let's do this.

Posted Image

For whatever reason, Riolu and Lucario remind me of Sonic.

Posted Image

Posted Image

These are "grill rings" doritos.

(I'm sort of out of Doritos at this point okay?!)

Posted Image

Vullaby was one of the version-locked Pokemon. He's kind of the opposite of Braviary and Honchkrow. Unimpressive attack, stellar defenses.

Posted Image

Posted Image

Posted Image

This forest has a couple different dragons.

Posted Image

Posted Image

Is Yuzu... lemon? :weird:

Posted Image

o_0

...that's so sad!

You'll be safe in my PC box forever, little guy. :3:

So that's...

Axew, Bagon, Deino... missed Gible. Gonna get my dragons merit badge soon!

Posted Image

Oh no way! Catchin the shit out of this.

I name it Larvesta.

Oh, and wanna see a neat trick?

Posted Image

ta-da! :mehehe:

It evolves with a Sun Stone these days, rather than level 59.

ALSO it's ability is Drought.

You know, Drought? Groudon's ability?

50% boost to fire attacks? Permanently?

Stat-wise, Volcarano and Arcanine are roughly equal, but Drought gives Volcarona a slight edge.

Well. You saw a stream. This is the first body of water I've seen in a while. Let's see what's biting.

Posted Image

aaaand?

Posted Image

I remember fishing you guys up in the Safari Zone!

...and then giving the fuck up and buying one at the Game Corner.

Posted Image

Habanero is his name!

I cast my line out again and reel in...

Posted Image

A Dragonair! That proceeds to tear my team a new asshole!

Cool Ranch was in the box to make room for Verde.

I fight this one, and run away from each one after that...

The stream also has Barboach and

Posted Image

Whiscash that outlevel me.

They also give out insane experience.

I catch a Barboach before I see what Whiscash. His name is Mayo.
(I've already linked Roe Mayo, Tuna Mayo and Wasabi Mayo doritos. Just imagine one of those in your head right now.)

My prize, however, has a 1% encounter rate.

Normally, I don't fuck with fishing for 1% encounters because fishing involves too much conscious thought.

Posted Image

However, because I only have three gym badges and have therefore completed what, 25% of the game tops?

The novelty of catching this:

Posted Image

was irresistable.

It's level 50. Base stats =

90 - 80 - 85 - 140 - 150 - 105

The battle is grueling.

Posted Image

SEE

GRUELING

Posted Image

Ain't no thang.

Posted Image

I've got Cool Ranch, and Phione is now Cooler.

And with that, it's time to exit Lostlorn Forest.

But a few errands while I'm in the area:

Posted Image

I needed a NeverMeltIce for Cool Ranch now that he's evolved, so I caught a Smoochum. How convenient.

Posted Image

This one might fit Kissy a little more.

Also, I have a tree to cut down!

Posted Image

Okay back in your Poke ball.

Posted Image

Cut continues to not really be worth it.

Oh, I also need to move this rock...

Posted Image

Posted Image

He's just an HM slave now. :(

Posted Image

This is a backpacker's Wartortle.

I WANT A SQUIRTLE DAMMIT

Posted Image

Meh.

Posted Image

This goes immediately on Volcarona.

159 base special attack + Fire attack + STAB + Drought + Charcoal = Pain.

Posted Image

Oh... uh... hey little guy.

Are you lost? This is kind of a forest...

Posted Image

3000experiencewithoneBulldoze.png

Posted Image

pffft screw off Hoothoot nobody likes you

Posted Image

oh someone got pooper peeved and grabbed his posse huh

I murder that Hoothoot and enslave his friend.

His new name is Ziggy. :3:

Posted Image

Hoothoot man keep bringing all your awesome friends!

I name his sharp buddy Tex.

Posted Image

Posted Image

I catch it because I don't know why.

His name is Ham.

Posted Image

Because Ham and Cheese pizza Doritos is a thing.

Posted Image

I still love Drain-Punching Normal-types with Guac.

(That's what's left of a Buneary.)

Posted Image

Doesn't Carnivine look a little bit like Flying Spaghetti Monster?

He's also really creepy when he moves.

Posted Image

Damn it feels good to be a gangsta.

Posted Image

Ooh! I have just the thing for this.

Posted Image

Whoever gets the joke gets to name any Pokemon I've caught. :arcee:

I have always had some questions regarding pokemon with high def/spec. def status in lieu of stats that can kill enemies good and quick. How would one effectively run a pokemon like Vullaby in their team and make the most of it's abilities when it's strongest stats are in Defense? A defender without any trap-esque moves like Leech Seed, Spikes, etc.?

Let's Play: Answer Jerp's Question

So I'm not Showsni, but if I did a Vullaby/Mandibuzz, here's how I'd run it.

First off, stats. For comparison, I'll put up Honchkrow's, who is also Flying/Dark

HP - 117 | 115
ATK - 80 | 155
DEF - 138 | 85
SPA - 95 | 135
SDF - 145 | 105
SPD - 108 | 90

110 (+7)
65 (+15)
105 (+33)
55 (+40)
95 (+50)
80 (+28)

A good deal of HP, great defenses, Nidoking's speed, and passable special attack. In this hack, it seems most stats under 100 are intended to be weaknesses.

Now his moveset:

Level 1 - Sky Attack
Level 6 - Fake Out
Level 9 - Fury Attack
Level 12 - Focus Energy
Level 15 - Air Cutter
Level 19 - Defog
Level 22 - Faint Attack
Level 25 - Nasty Plot
Level 29 - Pluck
Level 32 - Tailwind
Level 36 - Drill Peck
Level 40 - Featherdance
Level 44 - Dark Pulse
Level 47 - Roost
Level 51 - Sky Drop
Level 54 - Drill Run
Level 57 - Flatter
Level 60 - Heat Wave
Level 64 - Night Daze
Level 68 - Embargo
Level 71 - Hurricane
Level 75 - Foul Play

Pretty straight Dark/Flying learnset, with Heat Wave and Drill Run randomly in there for flavor.

Because I'm me, I'd probably stick with STAB damage bonuses and rock Nasty Plot to work with the 95 base special attack. Mandibuzz actually has enough defenses to make buffing first turn very viable, especially with a natural 2-stage buffer like Nasty Plot. Dark Pulse and Heat Wave are easy choices because they draw upon special.

Flatter is interesting because Mandibuzz can theoretically tank the extra special attack damage you give the flattered opponent, but I'd keep Nasty Plot over it any day.

As late game additions, Night Daze got beefed up in this game: 100 damage/ 100% accuracy. Some people dig Hurricane, but the accuracy makes me cringe. Finally, because every Pokemon got power upgrades, Foul Play might be a disturbingly effective physical attack because it draws upon the opponent's attack stat. If the opponent has more than Manibuzz's 80 base attack, that move hits for 120 damage and draws from the opponent's attack stat. This effectively allows Mandibuzz to hit like Honchkrow, but also take a couple hits himself.

Before considering TMs, using Mandibuzz's normal movepool, I'd roll with

Nasty Plot
Heat Wave
Foul Play
Air Cutter / Hurricane / a more apropos TM

Samurott picked up Ice-typing in his last evolution, which is weak to Rock. Sceptile is weak to Bug. That Escavalier's got both.

Stick a Charti berry on your Volcarona to show Escavalier why it shouldn't play with fire. (Or get Emboar out of storage.)

Wow, Solrock is... surprisingly effective.

Stall teams. You run bulky Pokémon that can take a lot of hits and often heal themselves, whilst wearing the enemy down. The classic combo is Skarmbliss - Skarmory plus Blissey. Skarmory has ridiculous Defence, Blissey has ridiculous Special Defence. Both can heal themselves (Roost and Softboiled). Your opponent uses a special attacker, you switch in Blissey, they're forced to change to a physical attacker, you bring in Skarmory - and all the while they're taking damage from Stealth Rocks and Spikes.

A defensive Madnibuzz can run useful moves like Roost, Taunt, Whirlwind, Knock Off and Toxic. (You probably want Brave Bird or something to stop yourself being total Taunt bait, though). With team mates to set up the Spikes and so on Whirlwind will keep wearing things down. Or you could surprise the opponent with a Nasty Plot set and go offensive - or even a Choice Band set! In the Battle Subway, the NPCs use a few Mandibuzz sets:

Mandibuzz | Calm | Wacan Berry | Taunt | Flatter | Roost | Toxic | Spd/SpD
Mandibuzz | Mild | Flying Gem | Dark Pulse | Air Slash | Shadow Ball | Nasty Plot | Spd/SpA
Mandibuzz | Modest | Sitrus Berry | Nasty Plot | Dark Pulse | Air Slash | Incinerate | HP/Def/SpD
Mandibuzz | Careful | Leftovers | Substitute | Swagger | Punishment | Roost | HP/Def/SpD

Some interesting ideas there. The fourth one that hides behind a Substitute, Swaggers the opponent to raise their attack, and then uses Punishment to punish their higher attack is pretty cool.

You now have three Rock weak Pokémon and only one resist...

Yeah, I hadn't really considered it (plus Samurott getting Ice snuck up on me). Rock isn't a very common type in vanilla, but I have to remember how this hacker's been evening things out in that respect.

Stick a Charti berry on your Volcarona to show Escavalier why it shouldn't play with fire. (Or get Emboar out of storage.)

I have never heard of that berry, and I definitely haven't picked one up yet.

Wow, Solrock is... surprisingly effective.

No, you'd probably need to be using the Dream World to get a Charti berry, though you can also find them held by wild Swellow. They reduce the effectiveness of Super Effective Rock type attacks.

Yes! My bad.

I didn't know Ice Body was a thing. Lunatone's got weaker physical defense than special, but if you do physically attack it, there's a chance you get frozed. Devious.
