Not really, no. I'd say they're on par in terms of how often such references appeared. But like I said, the newer stuff is more overt about it.

Unoriginal, offensive, amoral, and completely devoid of any traces of actual music.

*sigh* I'm suprised I'm gonna do this but.... rap really isn't as bad as a lot of people say. It's not my favorite genre, I admit. In fact, it's my second to least favorite genre, staying just slightly above country. You either like rock or you like rap, but you can't be kind to either less you be labelled a heretic. That seems to be some unwritten rule in the music lover's code. That, in turn, creates a lot of immature comments generated on either side.
Rap was mainly good back when it was still new and fresh (and it was somewhat more tasteful back then as well), but there are a few songs I can stand today. And I largely dislike the stuff. I don't have blind hate for other genres just... because. It's a form of music, but not conventional music with instruments and stuff. Anyone who says that rappers aren't talented hasn't attempted to rap. I can't even talk that fast and make up rhymes on the spot.
The ratio to tasteful vs. vulgar might be more skewed in the rap genre because of the 'gangsta' image people put on, but that's mainly due to the media. The are, believe it or not, tasteful rap songs in the world. Or at least, ones that aren't the horror stories make them out to be. Hell, I've even heard of "Christian Gangsta Rap." Although I think that's an oxymoron. *scratches head*
I don't like the genre, but I don't bash it incessantly. Doing so seems rather immature. Like Hustla said. If you don't like it, don't listen to it and shuddap.
Unoriginal, offensive, amoral
So's a lot of mainstream rock, from both now and the past. Most other genres for that matter. Your point?

My brother plays his dumb rap all the time. There are sometimes curse words.
Sometimes?
Anywho. My personal opinion is that rap is bad. Therefore I don't listen to it. But I do admit that a good portion can be pretty catchy, and if the lyrics aren't terrible, I can stand it. The thing is, when it's not the excessive vulgarity, it's the poor grammar. I can't stand the hip-hop culture because it has spawned the worst slang the history of spoken language has ever known.
At least when AC/DC was singing about doing "dirty deeds," and Pink Floyd was singing about "young lust," it was comprehendable.
Also, on the topic of originality.. i'd like to point out that it's nearly impossible to be original with music anymore. There's only so much that can be done, and also artists tend to lean towards doing what has worked and sold well rather than trying to be too creative and risking a flop. I suggest checking out more underground rock. Machinae Supremacy is a good start.

Just for the record, Young Lust is the stage in the rock opera of The Wall where the main character (a rock star who is clearly mentally disturbed) stoops to womanizing, and is obviously a satire of the sexual habbits of popular musicians. At least when AC/DC was singing about doing "dirty deeds," and Pink Floyd was singing about "young lust," it was comprehendable..
I see your point, but I just wanted to get that cleared up, seeing as The Wall is my favorite album.
Eh, the problem with underground rock is that the subgenre is in many cases an excuse to suck. There's a lot of good underground rock, but the majority of it is, well...yeah.Also, on the topic of originality.. i'd like to point out that it's nearly impossible to be original with music anymore. I totally agree. The problem is, when you try to explain that to them, they say something along the lines of "Grammar? Fuck that shit."I can't stand the hip-hop culture because it has spawned the worst slang the history of spoken language has ever known.

Yes, I know that. I've seen the movie as well. One of the greatest albums ever.

It was just one of the first examples that came to mind.

No no no, it's "Grammer? Fuck that shit."The problem is, when you try to explain that to them, they say something along the lines of "Grammar? Fuck that shit."

True, sometimes it's idiocy speaking in rap, but... I really do enjoy some of the catchier songs. The only rap artist I will buy albums of is Ludacris though - he's quite original with his work (poking fun at Hollywood and popular culture with some of his lyrics) and most of his stuff is catchy without an excess of curse words. Enjoyable.

Teenagers, in a generic sense, have always been fools. Regardless of what the current trends are. It's part of being a teenager. References to sex, drugs and violence have been present since before the advent of rap. No matter the time period, young adults always try to find ways to rebel and be 'bad' in order to be cool. Rap, rock, whatever, isn't the true cause. After all, those gnarly bikers in the 50's were around before rap, and they'd probably beat the ass of any gangsta in their path.
In rap they swear. In rap they use sexual references.
I swear enough to make a Navy sailor's ears bleed sometimes, and anyone who talks to me for more than five minutes is sure to discover that I'm pervy. And I don't like rap. I'm just uncouth (at least when not forced to be cordial).

Anyway, Selena yeah you can also swear from other things and not just rap. I do think though a lot of the swearing comes from rap. But, Selena you just swear your head off is I'm guessing that’s just the way you where raised.

On that note, I don't like like rap. I've listened to it and it just doesn't strike my fancy. Oh well. So I don't listen to it. that doesn't mean by any strech of the imagination that I have better music tastes than anyone. I listen to my fair share of bands that people think should die. Evanescence being one, several J-Pop bands. I listen to what I like and I like it that way. I also happen to have extremely sensitive ears so sometimes music with an extremely percussive bassline can hurt my ears. That doesn't limit itself to rap. Lots of other music can do the same thing. And people like to listen to their music really loud so I sometimes look like a music snob when really my ears are hurting REALLY bad. That said, my main listening choices are soundtracks from movies and anime, stuff like Enya, Sarah Brightman, some Opera, some Classical, and some more contemporary music from a wide range of bands.
That said, Weird Al is my hero. XD Come on! He gets to make fun of people, act like a psycho, be on TV AND get paid for it all! Turns out he's pretty smart too. Maybe I should look into the song parody business...or not since I'm probalby not creative enough.

I'd have to agree 100%Rap doesn't cause kids to fail school. That's a ludicrous statement. Also the sign of a fanatic or an ill imformed mind..
Yeah. He's a lyrical genius.Weird Al is my hero. . . . . Turns out he's pretty smart too.

So don't listen to it...I can't help it. My brother plays his dumb rap all the time. There are sometimes curse words. Its so annoying. Sorry, Hustla but I can not stand rap at all.
and krismas
I think you're talking about movies..Music doesn't and can't get repetetive or it would be the same songs over and over

So don't listen to it...
You don't understand. A lot of the time when he plays his @%# he plays it LOUD on the computer. I'm in the other room playing games..... Theres no escape!!!:icon_evil
But anyway it does get a bit annoying when people annoy me on what music I listen to. I like Classical, and Jazz. Yeah so what. If I like to listen to more civilized music that doesn't mean people have to come picking on me. I'm not sure if this is true but I hear that when you listen to Classical music it explands your mind.
