This has probably been brought up before, but I want to ask anyway.

Does anyone think this installment is looking a little too much like the Lord of the Rings? I don't but I showed it to my friends and they pointed it all out. I, of course, had noticed all these, and i'm sure you have too, but I choose to ignore it.

New gohma -> Shelob
Fiery monster (original trailer) -> Balrog
The dead soldiers -> The dead of Gondor
Link riding a boar -> Warg Riders
The wooden man in the woods -> Ents
Link chased by flying dragons -> Flying Nazgul.

There were more but I can't remember them.

I appreciate that from Nintendo's point of view the LotR films may do wonders for attracting interest in the new Zelda, but cramming so many similar creatures into the trailers may make it look like a rip-off. I'm sure that these are but a fraction of the main game, but it is worrying, don't you think?

And i agree, but going over the top will only put off even more people than Celda did.

You'll be surprised. The general consencus amongst a lot of people is "OMFG this gaem is liek totally guna rock!!!!!1". Sadly, looking at the trailers when z05 was first shown at E3, this is what tonnes of people were asking for.

I can only hope that Z05 turns out to be more refreshing in OOT-style than a disappointment like LotR-Third Age.

Yeah. If I want Lord of The Rings, I'd go play a LotR game. This is Zelda, for God's sake!

I really hope that Miyamoto can find a happy medium for Zelda that isn't too much of a LotR rip off but isn't so cartoony that it hurts sales.

But I really hope that Nintendo refines the WW style and releases another Celshaded Zelda game. I think with a little tweaking of the Link character model that the style would be perfect for the series. And to the EVIL REALM with Joe-Consumer!!!

Okay, there is no way a reliatic Zelda could not look like LotR. Think about it, there isn't.

Personally, It seems to me that if any rip-offs were done, Jackson ripped the visuals of the films from Ocarina and Majora's Mask.

Granted that there is no excuse for the Balrog-esque creature from the first trailer. Still I can't wait to fight that thing!!!!

A shadowy cloudy Dark Realm would look hot if it were cell shaded.

(takes a deep breath)

Just. Shut. UP.

I am sick and tired of people comparing the new Zelda to Lord of the Rings. You don't like it? Then don't buy it! You don't have to buy the game. Nobody is forcing you too. So if you don't like the way it looks don't buy it. Be like all simple-minded cel-haters and go "d00d, t3hy m4d3 z31d@ l00k l1k3 L07R, 7|-|@7$ $7up1d, lol"

So it bears resemblence to Lord of the Rings. Big fat hairy deal. You find something from some form of media in somethign else. One could say Link is a rip off of Peter Pan. One could say Final fantasy is a rip off of Dungeons and Dragons. Stuff like this happens. Stuff from popular media will be used to help make something popular. Don't like it? Then go and hit your self on the head with an unabriged dictionary, cause that's what this world is all about. Taking somethign that already exists and applying to something you use.

The only similarites between Zelda and the Works of Tolkien are the elements found in all fantasy stories.

I think you'll find a host of similarities in Batch's first post on this topic. Compare the number of similarities in z05 with the number in TWW. <_<

XD

"And there in the middle of the Green Woods of old, the grey company encountered the beast. It was a creature, similar in shape to a man, but several feet taller, much stronger and covered in fur except for his behind, for which the elves called him Gorheld, as the sole sight to his lack of clothing was horrifying.

On his hands he wielded an odd weapon in the shape of a v, which could be thrown and yet it would still return to his horrible hand, and could summon the help of plants full of ill-will, that followed his orders..."

The new Zelda is in no way similar to anything in Lord of the Rings other than things that have been around for a long time.

As many times as I've read about the Zelda to LotR comparisons, everyone's pointed out the lava monster and compared it to Balrog, but no one seems to recognize that it's actually a mix of two LotR monsters. Balrog and the trolls. Just like the cave troll of Mordor, the lava monster has a chain that he uses as a flail. I suppose most people liken it to the Balrog's whip, which is logical, but it brings to mind images of the cave troll to me immediately. What's more, the general shape and size of the lava monster's body is just like a cave troll. His only real similarity to Balrog alone is a body of fire.

The fact is, just like lord-of-shadow said some time ago, that this obviously them going too far with the European gothic feel and trying to attract the LotR audience and the "fans" of Zelda who've only ever played OoT and MM, think they're the first Zelda games and then not wanted to buy TWW.

The difference between Zelda and Tolkien/LoTR/Iwouln'tknow
Tolkien=Mideval-style book written by a European/American/Iwouldn'tknow guy
LoZ=Mideval-style game made by a group of mostly Japanese guys
Tell me if I'm wrong because I don't even touch LoTR. XD

Geesus, you people. All fantasy since LotR's publication has been a rip-off. If you're complaining that this is too close to the style of Peter Jackson (Stop calling it Lord of the Rings, Tolkien never made movies) then live with it. You MIGHT have noticed that everything is like that now, Peter Jackson just did it best. Why is it a bad thing if they look similar? That just means it's well-made.

New Gohma: And the old Gohma wasn't?
Firey Monster: Because Volvagia was TOTALLY original. A fire Dragon hiding in a volcano? Where do they get this stuff?
Dead Soldiers: Hmm... Yeah, OK.
Link riding a boar: I still don't see how this works. If it's more horse oriented, the enemies need something to ride, and it makes sense that Link should be able to ride that, too. "Goblins on Swine" ain't Jackson's property, so I don't see the problem.
Wooden Man in the Woods: Deku Tree/Ent/Forest Spirit... what's your point? You people act like Jackson invented all this stuff.
Link being chased by Dragons: So Zelda has dragons now. You'll live. Not all dragons are Nazgul.

Dragons fit Zelda. It goes back to the archetypal monsters vs distinctly European as I brought up in the werewolf thread.

Ken the Wandering Soul, Alakhriveion,

No one is complaining except for the two of you. Yes, the look of Zelda '05 is clearly, obviously inspired by the look and feel of Peter Jackson's motion picture adaptation of the Lord of the Rings books. There's no question of that.

But no one minds!

It looks good and it's lifting inspiration from all the right places. No one is saying "it looks like LotR and that makes me mad". The only complaint-like statements I've been seeing are that the decision was made to appeal to the wrong crowd of gamers--not that it looks bad at all.

Personally, I think the Gohma in the new trailer looks much more like the original Gohma from LoZ than any other incarnation. OOT had her with a distinct spider-like quality, and Wind Waker had her as a giant centipide 'thing', but I think this one looks more like the old 'crab' version of her.

As for the 'firey boss'...and the 'moss-creature'...Was I the only person who thought that the moss-creature WAS the firey boss, just...not revived?

It's a giant one-eyed crab. "Gohma" is a safe bet.

Like-wise, I've been seeing a lot of people call the black spider (the one that leaps at Link while he's bound in webs) a tektite. Pay close attention to the markings on his back. I'm almost completely sure it's a modern re-imagined skulltula. Definately not a tektite.

I wasn't thinking Tektite or Skulkulla. Skultullas have to have skull shells, otherwise their name is pointless.

I just hope the day never comes were Keese are rendered as fire-breathing mini-dragons.
