I believe it is more of the opposite as far as SSBM is concerned. Background story for the characters as seen in their figures is all accurate, but abilities and actual fighting aren't too accurate. I mean, look at Samus. She's 1.9 meters tall, and Kirby is .2 meters tall, yet he comes up more than halfway up her. As far as falling goes, that doesn't mean much either, because in reality all things fall at the same rate regardless of weight, if you ignore friction and all that shizazz.
Look at Captain Falcon. How are any of his moves based off of F-Zero things? Jigglypiff's sleep has nothing to do with the Pokemon sleep, and I don't even think Roy had any of those moves in Fire Emblem since he just got all of Marth's moves. I heard Ness got all of his moves from Paula in Earthbound, and where does Falco Vision and Fox Illusion come from? I could go on, but my point is that their abilities in Smash Brothers have lots of liberties. I mean, look at Ganondorf. Nuff said there.

Well, yes, there are many things that mean the character's aren't *exactly* how they are in the games. Otherwise, Mario would be dead in one hit, Samus would be insanely superpowered, Link would have too many items for the number of buttons available, Ness would have little more than purely aggressive spells, Captain Falcon would have... Hardly any moves at all.
I should point out Roy hadn't even appeared in a game before SSBM, and his attacks were fire-based versions of normal Fire Emblem attacks from other games in the series, and he ended up with a sword that could do the same thing.
I've already said that falling doesn't mean anything to do with their weight.
I think that despite the fact that the characters aren't 100% accurate, since they have to make the game balanced and give the characters unique abilities and allow them to fight in a SSBM environment, it's remarkable how many things they DO get right, and how many things they have borrowed from the character's games. There's a MASSIVE number. I don't think pointing out characters like Captain Falcon or Fox is fair, because they're in ships most of the time (although there's nothing wrong with Fox Illusion; he zips along really fast, so do Arwings). Captain Falcon is a bounty hunter so there's nothing wrong with him being able to kick some ass. They just *gave* him some moves. Who's to say he doesn't have those moves in the games or not?
Even Ganondorf, who's a clone character, has one of his normal moves; the Warlock Punch, which he uses to punch the ground on OoT. And his normal A move also 'electrifies' the opponent just like his attacks in OoT. Then there's his taunt.
And I think it's a bit much to expect Kirby to be his actual size.

I.....guess that makes sense. :s:
That's almost what I said before: Two people sharing the same body.

I'm not saying everything is made up. If they didn't get a lot of things "right" for some characters then I don't think they would have any right to call it a Nintendo All-Star fighter. What I am saying is that they have taken liberties, so Smash Brothers isn't a good gauge of (especially made up) abilities. The Bombs work very similar to the way they do in Zelda games. That's something they did right. But Nayru's Love reflects attacks. There is no basis in any Zelda game to prove that this works, so going around saying that Link could use Nayru's love to reflect an enemy's attack in a hypothetical situation wouldn't be very sound.
As far as Sheik's abilities, the only info we have on where they were pulled from is when they (Masahiro Sakurai, the director of SSBM) mentioned how they just modeled it after Ninja things to make her look like a foreign warrior. Take that as you will.

Remember that knife from that poster? A lot of people in Zelda 5 had great knives.. and almost nobody used theirs. XD

Sheik was always a ninja, or ninja-like, hence the leaping about the place and disappearing and whatever. Official art shows him using the knife Kairu mentioned, I think he uses it in SSBM for some attacks (dashing A, if I remember correctly).
Naryu's Love was designed to defend against attacks with a magic barrier, so it's not THAT much to suggest that it could do that. Obviously it doesn't in OoT, but still, it works in the SSBM enviroment, which is obviously different. Zelda appears to have variations on the spells anyway, Din's Fire for example is very different.
All I'm saying is that it shouldn't be completely discounted. Take the stuff with a large or small pinch of salt if need be, but still. If they made a game involving Zelda as a playable character it's very possible she might end up with variations on those spells being in her arsenal. Her version of Din's Fire would be particularly fun to use in a 3D enviroment.
Still, seeing her with a sword in the Zelda '05 artwork is much more interesting.

I liked the slicey whip and darts. All she did was throw Deku Nuts and light flashes and do backflips in the real game.

We're kinda going off topic here. <_<

The point is, even if the moves had liberties taken, it doesn't excuse that they left out some of their real (or at least more logical) abilities.. but a lot of these characters didn't get a lot of cool things until after SSB series anyway.
uh, wtf? Roy had never appeared in a game before SSBM??? he was in one or more of the fire emblem games, surely!!

Whoa, old topic. Oh well, I liked this topic anyway.
He appeared in the next Fire Emblem game (the sixth game) released AFTER SSBM. His appearance in Melee was a sort of 'preview'. Incidently, that Fire Emblem game was the last FE game never to be released out of Japan.
Marth had been in two FE games beforehand, including the very first. He's the original 'Lord' of the series (basically the hero, the main guy).
Kairu, what 'more logical' abilities are you speaking of? Give us an example.

I hope I'm not too late with this.
I think Zelda turns into Sheik using a mask. If Link can change his shape into Deku Scrub, Goron and Zora in MM, why can't Zelda change her shape into a toned male with red eyes?
This would also explain how Zelda could change into Sheik so quickly in SSBM.
