Exactly. We know that not everyone who is labeled a "nerd" is exactly the same, but they have things in common that make the label useful, so we use it. Labels are never meant to be the end-all of someone's identity.

Also I had another notion. I think another reason people seem to crave labels as labels normalizes their experiences and it's a comfort to know there's others out there who had similar enough experience that they can put a name on it.

 

Yeah, I can say from personal experience that that's true.
