Seems like we're getting an item similar to the magnetic gloves in OoX and FS. This image shows Link having a previously unseen item assigned to the B button as well as something that looks like two differently coloured horseshoe magnets by the left of the screen. The video also has a harp icon popping up around 0:27-0:31, which I assume must be Link's instrument of choice in this game.

And as for the mysterious character, I initially assumed that it was a redesign of the Sword spirit or perhaps a mysterious helper à la Sheik, but the Sword Spirit's icon pops up a few times in the trailer and it doesn't look like this mysterious person at all. Also, the contraption he's sitting on in the trailer is shown to be attacking Link a few screens later, making it more likely that he's a villain of sorts.

I find it weird that nobody, and I do mean nobody, has noticed that the vast overworld that has been a staple of Classic Zelda is completely absent from this game. I know Aonuma has been killing it in the DS games, but this is the first console game to miss it and so far no one's batted an eyelid at how cramped the new environments look. Does anyone remember the first Twilight Princess trailer, in which the overworld was the first thing shown of the new game? I remember that got people at E3 screaming and whooping with delight.

What are you talking about?

Just about everything in that trailer looked like it was in a dungeon.

Love it when people judge an entire game based a minute worth of clips.

I am very excited for this game, can't wait for it to come out.

And I'm inclined to agree with Gibdo Master here, most of that trailer looks as if it was shot in dungeons, not the overworld.

I am extremely worried about that, myself. The lack of any mention of overworld so far, combined with some of Aonuma's quotes about wanting to simplify the game structure, have me extremely worried.

I'm with Raien and los here. The Zelda series has become increasingly linear lately, and Aonuma's interviews haven't done anything to assuage my concerns with this game.

Also, that demo looks like the game is primarily gonna be about showing off the Wii Motion plus with silly puzzles. Whoop-dee-doo.

Love it when people judge an entire game based a minute worth of clips.

I hope for the sake of consistency that you're aiming that comment just as much at people who are excited about the game.

While the trailer looks like it was composed of scenes from dungeons, I have to admit that I share some of Raien, LoS, and Fin's worries. Really, we haven't so much as seen one shot of the overworld yet.

So far from the comments made about this game it seems like there's gonna be an overworld, it's just not going to be as big as TP's, but denser. They seem to be doing this because a size-able amount of people complained that TP felt "empty". I'm too tired to track down the comments right now but I know they've said such things.

It could be that the overworld is part of the big twist/gimmick of the new game (Such as a laputa-esque sky overworld) and they just don't want to reveal it yet.

I think it looks great so far, even if the trailer is focused on dungeons. I usually see those parts of the games as the least immersive when playing Zelda, but these clips make the dungeons seem a lot more fun this time round.

But I still have to agree with most in this thread that little or no overworld would be a serious downer.

*sigh*

The more I see about this game, the more I lose hope. I am reminded of both Metroid Prime 3 and the DS Zeldas with this trailer. That is not a good combination.

Is it too much to ask for just a standard Zelda game? No gimmicks, no puzzles-for-combat or puzzles-for-dungeons, just a solid, standard, Zelda game. Why is that so hard?

This is how I see it. If Skyward Sword turns out to be a great game that everyone loves then Nintendo will know where to take the series as far as gameplay is concerned. If not, it gets written off as a mistake and they try new gimmicks to impress us with. I have high hopes for every Zelda game released, that's what you do when you are a fan. Whether or not this game is going to be an enjoyable experience for me is still a mystery. We can only hope Nintendo doesn't disappoint us.

Maybe the overworld isn't their focus, at least for the trailers; they want to show off the new items and how they're using the motion controls, for the sake of doing something different; the overworld probably won't be anything too special, since few things could top the unveiling of it for TP, so they're showing off what is new.

I am curious to find out when they did with it, given the new graphical style. Maybe that'll come at E3.

I'm not really that worried at all. I've loved every single Zelda game I've played so far - there's always been something about it that makes it enjoyable for me, something that makes it....well, Zelda. But then again, I suppose I'm not that hard to please when it comes to this. I have been known to completely love a game just because OMGBOATOMGOCEAN. :P

But with that being said I'm looking forward to this game; from what I've seen it looks gorgeous and fun. :3:

I remember Aonuma saying (or at least strongly suggesting) that Skyloft would be a hub area from which Link would descend to the different parts of Hyrule. People have said that all the clips look like dungeon areas, but I disagree. The open forest areas look much more like what we'd be seeing in a traditional Hyrule overworld.

To the people who say these clips don't reveal a lot, they reveal what the developers prioritise in their games. That was how people like Malstrom were able to predict that Metroid: Other M would be full of cutscenes just by watching the first trailer. The fact that we've now had two gameplay trailers of Skyward Sword and no sign of a vast overworld is very very revealing.

And just to re-emphasise how emotionally powerful a vast overworld can be, I will actually link the E3 2004 trailer of Twilight Princess. In retrospect, I think this trailer comes closer to showing what Classic Zelda used to be like than anything else we've seen since Ocarina of Time, even Twilight Princess itself.

I really disagree with that. If anything, the overworld hints we've had for this game are far more like the old games than the giant field hubs of the games since OoT. ALttP and LoZ didn't have giant fields, they had fairly dynamic overworlds with a lot of monsters and minor puzzles and crap. And there's also this picture:
Posted Image

Which doesn't really imply no overworld either.

Personally, I'm excited for this. Sometimes it feels like I'm the only one who did, but I liked the last three Zelda titles. Particularly ST and TP. And while the initial trailer wasn't dynamic enough because it focused too much on the different items as opposed to the areas we'd explore, this trailer really upped my hype for this game considerably. The environs/graphics look great and the controls were better served being showcased in the midst of a general trailer as opposed to being the focus of the trailer.

@ everyone complaining about the overworld

Didn't Aonuma and Miyamoto say pretty early on that SS was merging the dungeons with the fields?

This trailer looks amazing. I noticed that the design for the Skyward Sword seems to change throughout the trailer (at one point looking similar to the MS in TWW when it loses its power) and the female figure seems to be getting a little older throughout it. I wonder if this means that the Skyward Sword's becoming the MS is something that is going to occur throughout the entire game. And did anyone else notice that one of the characters in the trailer looked like Vaati a little bit? If he is, then I think we'll know which game is truly first.

At least we can get a rough release date for SS. OOT 3D is coming out June 7, and according to Nintendo, SS is coming out shortly after that. I'm guessing sometime in June or July.

Here's something I can see someone asking on one of the forums a few months after SS's release:

Zelda n00b (becomes a fan because of SS): Do any of you think there will be any more Zelda games made with this Master Sword?

If I see something like that, I'll laugh and then answer.

I'm actually secretly hoping that "Master Sword" will be taboo much like "Triforce" was in TP, just to see the "Is the Skyward Sword the Master Sword" debates.

Also, since this game deals with the creation of the Master Sword, (I assume,) I'm waiting for the inevitable "SS is the new Imprisoning War."

The arrow and the c-button icon seem to flash at various intervals. It's kind of hard to tell what each one is for. I'd presume that the arrow means that if you want to raise your shield, you have to raise the nunchuck accordingly. It seems like full motion controls in this one. The sword swings in the video don't look pre-programmed, they look like they're following Wiimote movements. Link keeps holding the sword out in one direction or another after a strike.

C-button.... no clue what it's for.

A shield-bash would be neat, but I doubt it's that. Maybe you have to hold C and then raise the nunchuck to use the shield.

Yeah, I don't like what I see. The wiimote swordplay is a nice gimic, but when you get to it it's just that: a gimic. I find the idea that the wiimote can do anything but wave a transistorized wand clunkily. . . .laughable.

Bear in mind that I am only VERY loosely associated with the Zelda titles, but, while I'm not worried about there not BEING an overworld (this isn't a game demo; it's a gameplay demo using dungeons which show what the game can do) The graphics don't even look as good as Wind Waker, but I can get over that. I do see that there will be dungeons. Zelda is the only major game franchise I can think of still doing dungeons. TP demonstrated that the series can be just as good--if not better--by downplaying or ignoring dungeons with overworld questing. These days, dungeons are things you throw in one or two required "trials" for the main game, and some miniquests to satisfy the hardcore gamers.

Dungeon items, puzzles, nothing new. Nintendo, you know this isn't the SNES era? Just being sure.

I still think the deliberate exclusion of any overworld in the trailer actually indicates that the SS overworld may be the big surprise/gimmick in the game. (I would love to see some sky cities.)

Although i guess when the tww trailers came out they were plugging the ocean overworld from the start...?

The graphics don't even look as good as Wind Waker, but I can get over that.

Are you serious? To me this looks like a hybrid style of the realism of TP and the cartoony aspects of Windwaker; a perfect combination.

I think its looking gorgeous.

I don't really see The Wind Waker in it at all. The Wind Waker's grphical style was pretty much defined by two things:

1. Very stylized character proportions
2. Use of celshading to create solid blocks of color.

Neither of those are apparent in Skyward Sword. It uses Twilight Princess style models. The textures/lighting/graphical effects have lots of (wonderful) color in them, but they don't have solid color: there is shading. This is TP with a colorful veneer thrown over. Which is a huge improvement, to be sure, but not a mix of the Wind Waker and TP.

What I'd really like to see is something with character proportions like we see in classic LttP/LA era character art, combined with the celshaded rendering (solid colors!) from the Wind Waker.

Or a game that looks like this:

Well, I hope that when enemies gang up on you, they actually gang up on you, instead of one attacking you whilst the other just bounces around. Can't tell from this trailer, but it would be... challenging.

I was thinking the same thing. Either that or some sort of gauge where either you wait till it fills up before you can use your sheild or it's some sort of limit on how long you can hold your sheild up. A sheild health meter makes more sense though. Looks interesting. Maybe it will make the game more challenging. I hate though but only because I really, really HATE HUD's in games. They get in the way of seeing everything and the one for SS was ungly and fussy enough as it is before they added the shield health meter. Oh well.

Well looks like I'll be having an addition to my sig. I'm totally stoked about this game. Not sure what I think about the new character though. He )is it a he?) looks pretty bishy would actually be cool since most Zelda villains save Vaati aren't pretty boy types.

Maybe it's some sort of magic meter? Isn't it usually on the top left or right corner of the screen? It's about time it made a comeback, anyway. Since this game's story is going to be about the creation of the most important item in the series, then it had better be good! Especially since it's been in development for at least four or five years.

And I've already seen a lot of theorizing coming from this trailer, mostly about the new character in it. One that sticks out is that the new character could be the spirit of the Gilded Sword, but most of us who played MM should be able to throw that one out pretty quickly. Do people on the forums always jump the gun about theorizing on upcoming Zelda games? I remember that with ST, but I don't know about some of the others since I wasn't around this part of the net at the time. Just curious.

Interestingly enough, the folks at IGN are thinking that it IS Vaati.

If it IS Vaati, the mere premise of the game is enough to suggest Minish Cap's backstory, but really, who cares about the timeline?

I don't like the Vaati theory. There's like nothing about him that looks remotely like Vaati other than the hair color and even then, Vaati's more of a pale purple.

I like the theory that he's related to the skyward sword girl somehow. Maybe there's a race of sword people. His cape reminds me of the Gilded Sword a little but I doubt he's that. Unless he's gilded version of a new sword.

Anyone reminded of this video when he vanishes?

Edit: He also gives me a Sheikah vibe. If only he had red eyes...
