Only a year between degrees of black belt?
It seems our requirements are a bit more strenuous. Ranks are white, yellow, green, senior green, blue, senior blue, purple, senior purple, red, senior red, then 1st probationary black belt, 2 months each. 1st probationary black belt is merely the beginning, just barely scratching the surface. 2 months from there gets you to 1st decided black belt, then 6 months to first senior black belt, 6 months after that to get 2nd probationary, 2 months for 2nd decided, 6 months for 2nd senior, 2 months for 3rd probationary (and here's where the age restrictions kick in, gotta be 13 to get 3rd prob.), 6 months to get 3rd decided (and age 14), and 6 months for 3rd senior (for this rank you must be 15 and test at a national tournament, like I did recently in Houston). From here, it's 3 years as a 3rd Senior , 4 years as a 4th (and age 20), 5 as a 5th (and age 26), 6 years for a 6th, and so forth til 9th degree, each one a this level more difficult and at tournaments. But who ever guaranteed you'd pass them all? My instructor won't. With rank comes more responsiblity and more is expeted of your technique. Putting your foot down out of sync with your hand ONE time at my level, and $190 dollars for testing has been flushed. Also, keep in mind you can only test if you practice regularly (3+ times a week).
That's merely the student half. There's the other half for me - teaching. At first senior, I became a Trainee instructor, and trained students (and was trained myself to become a Certified Instructor). I tested shortly after my 15th birthday in a HUGE testing I will never forget in our annual Black Belt camp... so much fun!
