Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya. Just came out in Japan last year and I saw some clips from Sakuracon and started watching.

That counts as obscure?
Well, I like that. Did you watch the episodes in release/weird order Delphi?
I've been reading all the light novel translations as well. Volume 9 just came out.

Release order first then I'll go and do it the "right" way. Someone told me that it ends better if you watch it the way it was released. And I suppose it counts as obscure because the only place I've seen people talking about it so far is on the Sakuracon message board.

i am really curious about Azumanga Daioh... but dont have the money to investigate...
and FFU appeals to the FF fan in me, but i haven't heard enough about it to know if its worth spending money on.

i only saw the first dvd, but Peacemaker Kurogane looked good...

It does - release order builds up to a climax, whereas chronological order has quite a dull episode at the end, I think... (Someday in the Rain). Kyon and Haruhi argue about which episode is next after each one, Kyon going by release order and Haruhi by chronological.

I definately wouldn't say Haruhi is "obscure". It's pretty much a phenomena at this point.

Isn't that the shojo Anime where the main character transforms into a ballet dancer to save the day?

Yes, and halfway through the show's plot gets crammed full of wierd philosophical subplots where it turns out that they're just characters in a story and rebel against their melodramatic author to have a happy ending, and LOADS of themes besides.

Really awesome show. Plus my sister was in ballet when she was little, so it was something we could watch together.

Blue Gender's basically been forgotten after its showing on Adult Swim, and damn was that a good anime. Record of Lodoss War is also a fantastic series. Yes, even the sequel story was pretty good.

Other than that, if you consider Wolf's Rain obscure now, I'd say that's my favorite. That's actually a major contender for my favorite anime ever.

I'm not sure if this is obscure, but Rozen Maiden had a nice, original idea to it. Although, I didn't particularly enjoy it, it was different.

Azumanga Daioh was good. Any anime with a cast of 6 girls as the main characters and yet lacks fan service must have something else to it, right? It was funny, a nice kind of funny.

Azumanga... I couldn't watch it all because it was too damn cute... I started twitching from all of the cuteness.

Just watched the end of Gilgamesh last night. Airing one episode each week, really does make these Japanese Anime last. Depressing as Hell ending with no real philosophical point.
Spoiler : click to show/hide

Wolf, ever see Ideon? Specifically, the series? That's an ending that'll piss you off bad.

Ideon was pretty awesome. I personally liked the ending, though I wish the whole deal with Messiah was expanded on a little bit.

Watch the second movie then. The first's a recap of the series, then the second's the final four episodes that Tomino intended to have end the show. It's still a very chilling ending, and some of the content's pretty disturbing, particularly some of the deaths.

But you may already know this.

I just picked this up last weekend and it is rather good.

Genshiken : Sasahara Kanji is a college freshman who decides to join a student society to share his hidden thoughts on manga, anime and gaming.

When he first visited Genshiken, short for "Gendai Shikaku Bunka Kenkyuu Kai" (Society for the Study of Modern Visual Culture), his groundless pride was destroyed by the plotting of Madarame, a sophomore student in Genshiken, but he still couldn't admit that he is an otaku.

However, as he participates in society activities such as visiting dojin (private publishing) shops and anime festivals, and hangs out with other society members Kosaka (a hardcore otaku despite his extreme eccentricities and good looks), Kosaka’s girlfriend Kasuga Saki (who isn’t really an otaku), Ohno (a cosplayer) and the others, he opens his mind and resolves that he will make his way into the otaku world. With their help, Sasahara slowly adjusts to otaku life in Genshiken.

I saw all that, but I was wishing for more either way. I mean the whole "Oh hey, I'm some sort of weird divine being" thing came right out of left field.

After I saw a 5 year old girl get decapitated by a laser blast, nothing in that movie could surprise me.

Considering who directed it, a five year old getting decapitated was actually on my check list.
