What is your favorite obscure anime?

When I say that, I mean anime that has never been shown on Adult Swim, Kid's WB, Cartoon Network, etc., anime that is hard to find even at an anime convention, anime that is usually only found in subtitled form (but may have been dubbed).

Personally, I love Ginga Densetsu Weed. It's an original, two-season anime about packs of rival dogs at war for various reasons. It is the sequal to Ginga Nagareboshi Gin, a very old anime about the legacy of the father of the main character in Densetsu Weed. Both anime are rather violent, but very well done and definitely worth a look even if you're not an anime freak.
Both anime can be torrented here, although Gin isn't complete as of yet.

Ruin Explorers is fairly obscure, as far as I know. It's only four episodes, but they're *excellently* animated and strike me as a more adult version of Slayers, mixed with Fire Emblem.

It was released over here by ADV Films, and it's worth a look if anyone likes decent swords and sorcery anime. The characters are great and the dub isn't that bad actually (but the sub is better). And of course it won't take you long to see the whole story. It manages to pack a surprising amount of stuff into just four episodes, actually.

Also, the male lead hero is yummy.

Oh, and Magical Pokhan amuses me, and that's a fairly obscure anime too.

I haven't really seen too much 'obscure' anime. Plenty of it hasn't been on Adult Swim, but it's still known in anime nerd circles. Ah, the only really obscure one I can think of is Curse of the Undead Yoma (Or Blood Reign: Curse of the Yoma depending on the release). It was a fairly short series, only two episodes, but I remember it being very dark and gory. A fun watch, though not a masterpiece by any means.

Ah... as for others.... Sol Bianca, essentially about female space pirates, and Shadow Skill, which was a fun but cheesy martial arts thing. I don't know, I fail it. I can't think of anything too out there. Cyber City Oedo? *shrug* XP

I actually watched the first episode of Bakumatsu Kikansetsu Irohanihoheto the other night. Very nicely animated and looks to be an interesting plot about Japan just before the overthrow of the Shogunate. Another good one which has been dubbed but is still a bit obscure is Samurai 7.

They're not really "obscure", but I don't think anyone here has heard of I My Me! Strawberry Eggs, Cosmic Baton Girl Comet-san, or Animal Yokocho, which is a shame because they are all very lovely series that I enjoyed a lot.

Mermaid Melody which I only found out about through Youtube and Samurai Pizza Cats though I'm not sure if that's even an anime.

Thanks, Fyxe; I couldn't resist.

Also, if anyone likes old anime, there is a classic anime movie called Bagi: the Monster of Mighty Nature. It should be rather easy to find online, and the story is charming and unique, so check it out if you can.

So who's seen Speed Racer?

I think it may have been on Cartoon Network once...but not that I heard of.

Other than that, I'd say Golden Boy.

Oh yeah, Speed Racer was on Cartoon Network years back; I watched it a lot as a kid. It was delightfully mind-numbing. I think they still play it on Boomerang every now and then, but I'm not sure.

My favorite obscure anime is Pokémon!

...wait.

Not obscure enough! Um, it's, Bleach then!

(Yeah, the joke's old now.)

Eh, I saw the first episode of Ruin Explorers and it looked pretty funny. XD Next time I come along some money I'll probably look for a DVD at Best Buy. I'm also a pretty big fan of the Kirby anime, which doesn't seem to be very well-known. And... uhh... yeah, that's pretty much it.

I quite enjoy the Kirby anime, from what I've seen. Better than the Pokemon one, anyway. Not sure about the F-Zero one, never seen that.

And Ruin Explorers is spiffy stuff.

See, the only anime I've seen on television are Pokémon, Digimon, Cardcaptors, Beyblade and Medabots. Are any of them obscure? And they don't show even any of them any more.

Though, through the wonders of Youtube, I've also seen Negima!, Negima!?, The Melancholy of Suzumiya Haruhi, Zero no Tsukaima, Blood+ and .hack//SIGN, so maybe one of them is obscure enough. I don't know.

Funny. I see of people listing wel-known animes as obscure and of obscure animes as none-obscure.

Anyways I also like Final Fantasy Unlimited and Monster Ranch. Those two are pretty obscure. Monster Rancher especially since it came Posted Image here Posted Image around about the whole Digimon/Pokemon craze so it got completely overshadowed. It's a shame cos Monster rancher was pretty compelling. Also I'm surprised how of hardcore Final Fantasy fans never even heard of FFU yet I've never played a complete game and I totally love the anime.

Yeah, I agree, but I decided against pointing it out. At least people aren't talking about DBZ or someth- OH GODDAMN IT. XD

Anyway, I thought Monster Rancher had its 15 seconds of fame here, too. o_o; I suppose it depends if you knew or were one of those that enjoyed the game series.

Well there wasn't much talk about Monster Rancher where I'm from. It was all about either Pokemon or Digimon. Mostly Digimon. Whenever I talked about Monster ranher, people mostly looked at me like I was from Mars. I don't know how well it faired in the US. I remember a few good episodes but then nothing after that. I don't remember if it was canceled or I just lost track of the show. I just know I like the story better than Digimon and Pokemon combined. I liked Digimon second of all but hated Pokemon. I thought it wsa terribly overrated and couldn't stand all the hype with the Pokemon Cards. I remember constant Pokemon Card battles in the boy's room back in middle school. Ugh. I held it in middle school because of that.

How about the movies "The Fantastic Adventures of Unico" and "Unico in the Island of Magic?"

Those are great, they used to play on the old Disney Channel back when I was a wee one.

Ruin Explorers was awesome - I loved the merchant and his dog, he reminded me of Muttley from Hanna Barbera's Wacky Races.

I was hooked on Monster Rancher for a while, mostly because Tiger and Golem were badass.Ho

Hmm...other random anime...

How's about "Jungle Wa Itsumo Hale Nochi Guu?"

Or "Getbackers?"

Huzzah, someone else who knows Ruin Explorers! ^^ And yes, the dog is SO much like Muttley, the designer was so obviously inspired. Galuff and the dog are definitely the best characters. XP

I do love the big dude with the sword though, he's cool as well.

Rockworld TV is showing Gilgamesh now, but it's about fourteen episodes in so you might not get it. And I don't like it too much. The main characters look like man-girls.

Would Bobobo-bo Bo-bobo count as obscure? They're showing it on Jetix now.

Oops.

Uh, anyway, probably one of the anime that sit on the boundary between obscure and mainstream is Azumanga Diaoh.
But it's also one of the best anime out there, so it's worth mentioning anyway.

Why, exactly? I've never found it at Anime conventions and hardly anybody I've spoken to has heard of it.

And Bobobobobobobboobooobbboobies is on daytime TV, so it's not really obscure. XD But it is insane.

Has anybody here heard of Zetman? It has become pretty popular on manga sharing sites but has yet to be distributed in the US. One can only hope.
Coincidentally, how many here frequent the various manga sharing sites like Omanga and such?
Oh and Gantz is totally crack made visible.
