Just finished Time Riders Day of the Predator. Now, I have a pretty big list of stuff I need to read... Not sure what to go for next. Maybe the third in the Shiver/Linger series, but that probably means rereading the other two, and they're probably buried in a pile of books somewhere.

I'm like a quarter of the way through Hunter S. Thompson's Generation of Swine Vol. 1 exactly two months after beginning. I read Vol. 2 three months ago, this is long overdue...

I just started my second (first serious) read of Tom Wolfe's "The Right Stuff."

Holy frickin' crap, the man's a genius. Arguably it is way, WAY overwritten, but that's because practically nothing is made up and Wolfe was left with just his own narrative presence to fill the story with. An absolute must read for any author, particularly ones struggling with voice and character. Also a must read because it's one of the backdrops of modern space exploration, ergo pivotal to modern sci-fi.

Recently finished Nightwatch by Terry Pratchett. I've read about 5 discworld novels now, plus listened to a further 4 on audio cd and it is so far my favourite (although my favourite character is Moist Von Lipwig).

Hm, I'd be hard put to decide my favourite Discworld novel. My favourite character is probably Rincewind (gotta love the classics!), but as for my favourite book... I think I might have to plump for Mort.

The Legend of Sigurd and Gudrun by J. R. R. Tolkien. Not an easy read (though Christopher Tolkien's commentaries make everything a lot clearer) but the use of language is masterful.

Currently reading Biggles Learns to Fly. I think the WWI stories are my favourite Biggles stories.

If Biggles was 17 in 1916, how old is he in the later books?

To answer the hidden question: Ace status, no matter the war, has always been acquired after downing five planes. It was a loooot harder back in World War I.

Dancing with the Devil by Louis Diaz and Neal Hirschfeld. Hirschfeld came to the library last week and spoke, unfortunately I was working that night and didn't get to see him. It's a great book!

I'm reading The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring by J.R.R. Tolkien and loving every word of it. I read the series ten years ago, but I was so young then that it feels like the first time - my memories of the films and The Silmarillion are far clearer.

Just finished 'Jane Eyre' by Charlotte Bronte. I love this book, I have read it several times since it being a critical novel study in English 30I.

Starting 'The Neanderthal Parallax' by Robert J. Sawyer. Book One: Hominids. I've read before, but I have to re-read it to enjoy Bok Two: Humans, and Book Three: Hybrids. Book One was amazing and I could not put it down... I'm looking forward to it.

*Kick*

Raven's Shadow (Patricia Briggs)

It was O.K. Classic example of you don't need to be perfect, or even terribly original, but the job still gets done. It only really deviates from the standard "farmer vs Dark Lord" formula in one way; it's the chosen FARMING FAMILY, not the chosen farmboy. I like the change; it keeps the cast tight, emotional jeopardy high, and makes transitions easy...but that's all the originality you've got? Shadow-tainted people, a "lookItMeImEvil" dark lord, and a magic system which feels like Dungeons and Dragons raped Wheel of Time and had a mutant baby?

My ideas for fantasy novels must look like they come from Pluto.

Well, they do say there's nothing new under the sun... (It's Biblical!) I guess if the standard formula sells, there's no need to change it. Incidentally I'm currently reading a book (the first in a series of four) where four chosen children have to find four orbs to save a dying oracle thing, each with their own individual race and type of dragon to ride. I'm guessing that one of them will be the focus per book, with one orb found per book. Seems a fairly safe bet.
