Well, I'm kind of bored and I've decided to put up something I was thinking of. Malon. Marin. Romani. Cremia. Whatever. There was definitely something there in OoT, same in MM. In Link's Awakening they seem like soulmates. In LttP Link's Uncle is identical to Talon. In TWW, Aryll was based off Marin (Malon genes?) and in z05 Link is a farmer. In Oracles and TMC she's just a cameo. In FSA she's a damsell in distress.

I was just wondering what you think the deal is with the possible lineage of Link and Malon. Are LttP Link/z05 Link/TWW Link their descendants? What do you guys all think? And this does (or I plan to) give this a bit more Storyliney debate, so please don't move this to Zelda General.

I think you're getting this the wrong way around. You say Link's Uncle was identical to Talon, but you forget that Talon was based off of Tarin, who was based off of a sort of mesh between Link's Uncle and Mario.

I don't see how Aryll is based off Marin at all.

In Link's Awakening, Marin was based off of Zelda, sharing much physical similarity to Zelda from the previous game (ALttP, and another reason to believe that it comes after ALttP) and having the same voice. She's Link's dream version of Zelda. Tarin was clearly based off of Mario, what with his obsession with mushrooms, his large moustache, and the fact that he turns into a raccoon.

Malon and Talon were based off of Marin and Tarin. Hence the Bowser pendant thingies. Ingo also looks like Luigi, probably based off of the guy who owns chickens in Tal Tal Mountain.

Romani and Cremia are obviously the alternate versions of Malon in Termina. There's also an alternate of Talon and three alternates of Ingo(???), all still based around the milk trade.

Since then Malon and Talon have appeared in later games, along with Ingo as well.

I think they're just evolving character designs and the reuse of solid character designs (once they got to Malon and Talon), just like the reuse of Tingle. It does not necessarily mean they are linked by blood. If you think of them as reincarnations, like Link, this doesn't necessarily involve decendants.

The problem with the idea of Link having children is that he generally has a habit of leaving Hyrule after his adventures are over.

...Still don't see how Aryll is based off Marin, except for the fact that seagulls like her.

^ Ask coinilius about Aryll/Marin.

Aye, and just because Link's Uncle came first, doesn't mean storylinewise he can't be Tarin's descendant. Oh, and Marin is like a Zelda/Malon cross (looks like Zelda, according to the manual) but has Marin's family and personality.

I agree about the Malon connection. I recon Malon and Link hook up after OoT child ending, and their lineage is aLttP Link and his uncle. However, there is no proof for any of this, as it is only guess work. I imagine Nintendo would always leave Links love interest open for interpretation to avoid upsetting any fans with different views. Particularly those who long for a Link/Zelda pairing.

Thing is, they don't 'hook up', they're only kids for one thing. O.o'' And he leaves to go to Termina. There's only been one hint to who Link likes throughout the entire series, and that's when Zelda kisses him at the end of the Oracle games and he gets hearts around his head.

Other than that, I don't think Link's really the type to 'hook up' with anyone, but it seems he became fairly close to Zelda after OoT (see the ending and the flashback in MM).

Zythe, you're still not getting my point. They didn't think 'lets base Marin on Malon'. It's completely the opposite way around. Malon ended up with some of Marin's personality (and to be honest, she didn't get THAT much of her personality, she's much more giggly and stuff). And Marin's personality was based on a more 'homely' version of Zelda's personality.

You also have to remember that Marin and Tarin didn't really exist.

Okay...let me review this again...

Malon in OoT/Cremia of MM both point to a possible relationship. (The affection, the compatibility, and best of all...the hug. :) ) But all in all, we JUST CAN'T TELL, only wish, and maybe someday we will have found out. For my romance theory, it's always been OoT Link with Malon or OoT Link the Loner.

LA...I'm sorry, but I quite honestly think that Marin is sort of a melding of the sweet humility that maybe Miyamoto felt like Zelda needed combined with Zelda's grace herself. Marin is the perfect Zelda that later spawned ideas of an OoT Malon to me. Of course, their relationship, if not PAINFULLY obvious, is brief. Marin is either a faroff dream, or a bird. It's like that Tobias/Rachel thing all over again. (Non-Anifans, forget I said anything.)

Lttp: ...I don't know, the Uncle never struck me as Talon-reminiscent. If anything, it was early development of characters that would become important only much later.

WW: YES, Aryll was indeed based of Marin, didn't Miyamoto say that himself? I dunno, but they are very similar. This does not mean that she spawned from Malon, just that the island theme and the beloved character of Malon HAD to be reincarnated in 3D, something I'm sure Miyamoto and Aunoma knew. Aryll is greatness, too. Love what they did with Marin.

Oracles/FSA/TMC: I HATE Capcom...stupid people just toss in a cameo and don't develop the loved character. Unlike our Nintendo gang, as in the above example, IMPROVING a semi-cameo, they throw in Malon and give Malon-haters a reasson to say she's just overused and unimportant...and TMC was the only good game of those anyway. (SPAM ALERT Tis OT!)

That's ma take...Malon, IMO, will become much more important in future installments, as a romance interest, or a great character in itself.

MJ! *mass huggling* STAY!

Anyways... I think Malon has no real storyline impact in the games, aside from that Talon sleeping thing in OoT, which didn't really make sense anyways. It would be much cooler if she wanted to be with Link, but never could be. Like Mary Jane in the first Spider-Man movie.

And, there were many hints to a Tetra/Link relationship in TWW. I just thought I'd mention it, considering Link and Zelda's relationship has benn brought up earlier in this thread.

Yea, the Link/Zelda relationship is a stereotype. The way I see it, Malon could be reincarnating in order to be with Link's repeated reincarnations. ^^ They could've gotten together after the OOT future, who knows? but the TWW intro implied he went on another adventure. Hey, it's a magical kingdom. Perhaps it's not frowned upon to ...bang someone and leave >.:D but no :(* then there's TWW. No Malon here, but maybe he did hook up with Tetra. They're building a new world after all, so who cares? It could explain why the future generations of Link and Zelda are such good friends. They're cousins ^.^ FSA Link could hook up with that Malon, LTTP Link can take Marin. (I would think that Malon's soul manifested in the dream world because of Link's karmic desires for a girl like her. It also explains why only SHE was able to escape. She was partially real.) and then there's AOL. >.> Zelda. It's pretty clear they intended it. Plus there's two Zeldas at that point in time. One to rule North Hyrule and one to rule South Hyrule. The North Royal line could make OOX a prince, and South Zelda's descendant being OOX's Zelda, making a possible couple ^.^ and their marriage reunites Hyrule :D *goes off into daydream mode. fanfic!!!*

Actually, it's totally relevant. If they intended them to be decendants, then they're decendants. If they never intended that, then they're not unless they retrospecively make them so, and they haven't actually given the slightest hint, then they're not. Everything else is fanfic.

I should point out, Husse, that if Aryll is indeed based on Marin in some way (what with the seagulls), then she's not based on Malon. Malon is a very different character to Marin, even though she's based on her basic design.

I think people are just falling in love with Malon themselves, and taking her role, which, when you think about it, is fairly minor, and turning it into something important.

Me, I think her voice is freaky, and Marin was far better (although Malon as an adult is a hawty).

Yeah. I was kind of wondering if Malon existed to keep Link and Zelda's bloodlines seperate untill their final incarnations could meet and not take part in incest.

Oh, fine.

I personally think Marin was always Link's perfect soulmate, but then she was based on Zelda. I love the idea that Link discovers the 'Marin' within Zelda when he returns to Hyrule. We always get the impression that there's more to Zelda's personality than what we see on the surface (she's tomboyish underneath, see Tetra and Shiek).

Question... If Rs are pronounced the same as Ls in Japan, are the differences between their Japanese names really Malin and Malon (or Marin and Maron)? Or are their names actually identical in Japanese?

Well, good, I'm not a complete dweeb...beloved? O_o

Romani escapes you? The fact that they are making Link more and more of a farmboy all the time and that sweet country life is the theme of this character and all it encompasses and affects has no effect on the epic 12th century feel of the game to you? Malon is teh R0X0rS, my friend...

I should point out, Husse, that if Aryll is indeed based on Marin in some way (what with the seagulls), then she's not based on Malon. Malon is a very different character to Marin, even though she's based on her basic design.

Aren't I the one that said Marin was based on Zelda? Yeah, I was. The only similar theme with Marin and Malon is the two girls' desires to be free, which is something Zelda wants too, the farmgirl bit, which was simply to stand in for the farm of the game, and the humility, which was probably to counteract older Zelda's snubbery.

And yes, Link and Marin belong together....stupid bird-trick/dream. NO romance, EVER in these things!

I think people are just falling in love with Malon themselves, and taking her role, which, when you think about it, is fairly minor, and turning it into something important.

Me, I think her voice is freaky, and Marin was far better (although Malon as an adult is a hawty).

Yes, it's fairly minor, but its impact is strong, and people have a REASON for blowing it up. It touches them, and the country feel permeates through the game. Why ELSE would half the Zeldafans take a minor role and make it a love interest? I don't THINK I'm that radical.

Saria's voce always ticked me off, I didn't think of Malon as too annoy...you a guy or a girl there? O.O

Can Link ONLY partner up with girls we see in the games, or what?

I'm dying of all the fanficing going on in this topic. It hurts.

Yup, he can. That's the way it works with games. :D

Romance in Zelda HAS to be fanfic, as is ANYTHING storyline at all that isn't canon.

Yes. They sound the same in japanese. Anyway, Zelda and Peach were based on the same stereotype. Talin is based on Mario, obviously, and Marin is based on Zelda, but she's also like the son of Mario, like Malon is to Talon ^^ so Malon is like, the reincarnation, of the son of Mario who is a dream of her dreamboy who only saw the Zelda in her that was really Peach. I think Marin and Link belong together... That was the first Zelda game I ever read, except possibly AoL. I didn't actually play the game, I just read the walkthrough that came with my Super Gameboy. It said that Link had fallen in love with Marin, so I take that as Gospel truth.

I'm still waiting for the sequel to LA. It left that game blatantly open to a sequel - "SOMEDAY, THOU

The Malon/Marin/Aryll thing goes like this - in the Zelda Box, Aonuma mentions that Aryll was originally going to be called Mararu (which would translate to Maryll), to be deliberately evocative of the Malon/Marin naming characters names (he mentioned both Malon and Marin). Although this element was removed in teh final game, elements still remain that tie Aryll to Malon and Marin... well, to Marin; the seagulls and her dress, which is light blue with red flowers on it (Marin wore a light blue dress and had a red flower in her hair).

Malon and Marin are spelled differently in the Japanese games - I've forgotten the details exactly, but Beno was kind enough to translate them for me in an old thread.

Well, Malon IS Marin. Just a mistranslation. So Aryll=Malon, and possibly descended from OoT Malon, which means that TWW Link might be her descendant (but not neccesarily OoT Link's).

Malon and Marin are different, with different names in Japan, but at the same time Nintendo intended a connection between all three - Aryll's name was ment to suggest Malon as well as Marin. Maybe Nintendo originally did want to suggest Malon and Link getting together, but changed it so as to make it more vague, so that people could make up there own minds.

A comparison of Aryll, Malon and Marin's names;

Japanese: English:
Ariru Aryll
Marin Marin
Maron Malon

So in conclusion, Malon and Marin are different characters, but Nintendo were attempting to suggest both of them when they named Aryll Mararu.

Here's some comments from Beno about it;

'There is more about Ariru but this is the only part about her name. It was a quick translation so there may be some minor errors, but this is the basic idea. (And this is Aonuma talking)

"As for the origin of Ariru's name, in the beginning we wanted the name to be similiar to Marin in "Sleeping Island" and Maron in "Ocarina of Time". At first she was called "Mariru", but it was finally changed to Ariru." '

'Yeah, it's exactly the same except there is a "MAH" sound instead of an "AH" sound. So Maryll is probably what NoA would have gone with.'
