"The Divine Wings of Tragedy" by Symphony X, from the album of the same name.

Spoiler

This is the second longest Symphony X epic.  The theme of the song is based on John Milton's Paradise Lost and Paradise Regained, and Dante's Inferno, while the music contains excerpts from Holst's The Planets and Bach's Mass in B Minor.

Savatage was one of the earliest progressive metal bands.  Founded in 1978 by brothers Jon and Criss Oliva as "Avatar", changing their name to Savatage in 1983, the band started as an eighties heavy metal band, with Jon on vocals and Criss playing lead guitar.  From 1987, Savatage began a change in sound, adding more symphonic elements.  In 1989, Jon saw a performance of The Phantom of the Opera, and decided to change the sound of Savatage to a more progressive and operatic style, starting with the album "Gutter Ballet".  The next album, released in 1991 was a rock opera called "Streets: A Rock Opera".  Afterwards, Jon left the band.  In 1993, Criss was killed in a car crash by a drunk driver (who survived), so Jon decided to carry on Savatage.  The band's last album was released in 2001.

Savatage was not as successful as other progressive metal bands, but oddly one of the side projects of Savatage was a success.  That side project is Trans-Siberian Orchestra.

Spoiler

This is "Gutter Ballet" from the album of the same name.

Haken are a recent progressive rock band from London, formed in 2007.  So far, they have released three albums, all highly rated in the progressive rock community, with their newest album, "The Mountain" released in 2013.  They have a varied and experimental sound, going through many styles that are found in progressive rock.  Some people have compared them to Opeth for some reason, and others called them the "British Dream Theater", although they show a stronger influence from Gentle Giant.

Spoiler

"Cockroach King", from the album "The Mountain".

Big Big Train are a relatively modern English progressive rock band (except for the drummer), who have a sound that resembles that of Genesis from the mid to late seventies.  The band have existed since 1990, but have only just started to become well known, winning the Breakthrough act award at the 2013 Progressive Music Awards.  The drummer of the band, the American Nick D'Virgilio, best known for Spock's Beard and played on the Genesis album "Calling All Stations"

Spoiler

"Make Some Noise", the intro to the 2013 release "English Electric: Full Power", which combined two albums and an EP..

Nightingale is a progressive rock band from Sweden.  It began in 1995 as a side project of Dan Swanö, known for the progressive death metal band Edge of Sanity and appearing on almost every other metal album released in the 90s.  The first Nightingale album, "The Breathing Shadow", was an exploration with goth rock (mixed with progressive rock), played, recorded and mastered by Dan Swanö alone in a week, and the only album to use a drum machine.  "The Breathing Shadow" started a conceptual storyline that is continued on the next three albums..  The second album, "The Closing Chronicles", had more of a progressive rock and metal sound, leaning towards 70s hard rock/AOR, and featured Dan's older brother.  By the fourth album, "Alive Again", Nightingale had become a band with four members.

Spoiler

"Nightfall Overture", from the album "The Breathing Shadow",

Moonsorrow are a Finnish metal band.  Starting out as a black metal band, combining Finnish folk and pagan elements and calling themselves "epic pagan metal", although some people compare them to Viking metal.  All of their lyrics are in Finnish, and based on Finnish mythology.  From the album "Kivenkantaja" onwards, the band started to add more progressive elements, with one album having only two songs that are each over 25 minutes long.

Spoiler

"Raunioilla (At the Ruins)", from "Kivenkantaja".

Shadow Gallery are a progressive metal band from Pennsylvania.  Formed in the 1980s, the name Shadow Gallery is taken from V for Vendetta.  The band released their first album in 1992, and since then have released only five more albums, the newest, "Digital Ghosts". released in 2009.  The lead singer for most of the albums died in 2008.

The sound of Shadow Gallery is compared to that of Dream Theater and Symphony X, and the members of the band appear in many different side projects..

Two of the albums, "Tyranny" and "Room V", follow a storyline  about a man who developed weapons for the U.S. Government, who becomes aware of the damage his weapons does, then is fired for questioning his corporate leaders for trying to profit from war.  The plot involves many political and conspiracy elements, such as government monitoring, the New World Order and weaponized smallpox.

Spoiler

"Gold Dust", from the album "Digital Ghosts".

Spock's Beard are an American progressive rock band formed in 1992 by two brothers, Neal and Alan Morse, with Neal playing keyboards and the lead vocalist, and Alan playing guitar.  Their style of progressive rock is influenced Yes and Gebesis, and have a pop leaning.  In 2002 Neal Morse left the band when he converted to Christianity.  Similar to what happened with Phil Collins and Genesis, the drummer Nick D'Virgilio took over lead vocals until he left the band in 2011.

Spoiler

"At the End of the Day", from the album "V".

The strange thing about this album, it was released the same year as Symphony X's "V: The New Mythology Suite", and the artwork was done by the same person.

Evergrey are a Swedish band whose style is described as 'morose' metal, lighter than doom, death or black metal, and less complex than most progressive metal.  Formed in 1995 by Tom S. England, who is the mind behind Evergrey and only original member in the band.  The lyrics of the band are of a darker theme, sometimes done as a concept album.

Spoiler

"The Masterplan", the first song from "In Search for Truth", a concept album about an alien abduction.

Spoiler

"Ziltoid the Omniscient", a truly solo album from Devin Townsend, and with a storyline so ridiculous that it makes Ayreon look like serious literature.  The story begins with the fourth dimensional being, Ziltoid the Omniscience, coming to Earth to demand the universe's ultimate cup of coffee.  One reviewer made the comment that it's like if Douglas Adams made a heavy metal album.

The album covers every style Devin Townsend had done up to that point (2007).    Devin Townsend did everything on the album by himself, playing every instrument (and programmed the drum machine), engineering, mixing and producing.  The drum machine was provided by Meshuggah.

"A Pleasant Shade of Gray" by Fates Warning.  A 53 minute song in 12 parts.  This is supposed to be the most experimental song that the band has done.

Karnivool is a progressive rock band from Australia.  I first heard them only about a month ago, and have so far listened to their newest album "Asymmetry".  From what I've heard so far they sound like a cross between Anathema and Porcupine Tree.

Spoiler

"We Are", from the album "Asymmetry".

Another song from Savatage.

Spoiler

"Chance", from the album "Handful of Rain".

Handful of Rain was the first album released after the death of guitarist Criss Oliva, and the return of Jon Oliva.  As with the album before this one, the singer is Zachary Stevens, who has a more typical metal voice.  The song "Chance" is about a Japanese diplomat in Lithuania during World War II who defied the government and signed visas for Jewish refugees.  This song features the first use of one of the trademarks of Savatage, the canon vocals.

More Savatage

Spoiler

"Morphine Child", from the album "Poets and Madmen"

Poets and Madmen has the return of Jon Oliva on vocals, but it's also the last Savatage album.  The reason why it's the last album is that Savatage was never successful, while the members of the band found bigger success as Trans-Siberian Orchestra.

I know I haven't posted here for over three months.

Recently I've gotten the first two Haken albums, so I thought to post something from one of them.  After listening to the albums I understand why some people call them the British Dream Theater.

Spoiler

"The Point of No Return". from Haken's first album, "Aquarius".

Pendragon are an English neo-progressive rock band formed in 1978 (as "Zeus Pendragon", but the Zeus part was dropped as one of the members thought it was too wordy for a t-shirt). In the past decade they have changed their sound and are now more of a progressive metal band.

I thought I would post more early Genesis

Spoiler

"White Mountain" from the album "Trespass".

Trespass is considered the 'official' first Genesis album. Their first actual album is "From Genesis to Revelation", but that album was made the way the producer wanted and not the way the band wanted. What makes Trespass different from the later albums is that it was recorded before Phil Collins joined the band. Before then, Genesis didn't have a permanent drummer.

The song "White Mountain" is a story about a wolf who challenges the leader of his pack.

"In the Cage", from the Genesis album "The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway"

Spoiler

I had already posted songs from "Foxtrot" and "Selling England by the Pound", the two albums that followed "Nursery Cryme". "The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway" is a two disc concept album that was released in 1974 and the last Genesis album to feature Peter Gabriel. The story of this album is about a Puerto Rican called Rael living in New York City who ends up underground on a strange quest to find his lost brother. Many of the ideas of this album came from Peter Gabriel's dreams. Phil Collins gave his interpretation on the story as Rael's search is for a missing part of himself.

"In the Cage" was a song that Genesis played on tour for many years, including on their final tour in 2007.

"Star of Sirius" from the Steve Hackett album "Voyage of the Acolyte"

After "The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway", Peter Gabriel leaves Genesis. The rest of the band decide to take a break while searching for a new singer before deciding to go with Phil Collins. In that time, Steve Hackett releases a solo album, "Voyage of the Acolyte", which many fans consider a lost Genesis album. The album features Phil Collins and Mike Rutherford and many of the songs were rehearsed with Genesis.
