Of course I am excited. A whole mess of proposed fall releases were announced today. Including Shin Megami Tensei X Fire Emblem.

Ugh so excited. Wind Waker!

Well the video at least answered my question as to why they're making a remake before a new game. :P

I want to be excited, but honestly I can't really say that I am. If they chose to remake MM or any of the first four games in 3D, I would have been really excited, but WW is tied with the Oracles as my least favorite Zelda game. It's by no means a bad game, it just lacked any real challenge, save for the Triforce Shards, which was just plain annoying. Who knows, maybe the remake will have more a challenge, only time will tell.

SFU TOOM! YOU DON'T COUNT! And while I agree I would have preferred MM more than WW, I still love WW.

I didn't see the Nintendo Direct, just the zelda thing. Now I want a Wii U even more than I did before D: I NEED MONEYS.

I hope the yoshi game is good, we haven't had one in a long time.

And also damn, I wish I could go to E3. I've wanted to go forever, but this one has playable Mario and Kart, and at least screens of the New SSB game.

I'm disappointed it's not on the 3DS but this will probably be a "Nintendo, take my money, take it!" game and make me buy a Wii U.

Can't help it. That's christmas decided.

Just watched a video of Aonuma discussing this game. The pics of the HD look good, if a bit bright. Is it too much to hope that perhaps they'll throw in a few extra islands to explore? I see I'll also be acquiring a Wii U before the year's up.

The only downside of the video was that Aonuma stated "our new Zelda title (Zelda Wii U) looks like it is going to take some time to complete"

Edit: Here's the video:

Even though this is my favorite Zelda game, I don't know how jazzed I would be about buying and playing it again.

This only reminds me that I have an untouched copy of Wind Waker sitting by my dresser and on a spot on my game queue list. Also, they sorta look like plastic. I'm just hoping that's the image quality of the screencaps and not the actual game.

That's cool and all, but honestly, I'm more excited about what Aonuma was saying about the new game, the way he mentioned how they wanted to buck series standards, didn't quite get around to it during SS, and all that. But that's a totally different topic.

After having played Treasure Adventure Game, I'm not really in the mood for Wind Waker HD. There's only so much sailing, looking for treasure you can do.

I don't like it. It doesn't look cartoony and Cel-shaded at all anymore, which was like, the whole THING of Wind Waker. I hate to say it, but... with all of the Zelda games they could have remade with fancy graphics, WW is the worst possible choice.

It was probably the easiest choice for Nintendo in terms of re-visualization.

It still looks cel shaded, just updated. I hope the actual game isn't as washed out looking as the screens I've seen though. I don't mind updated cel shading, but I do mind losing the vibrancy the game had.

Not gonna lie; I'm badly disappointed.

Don't get me wrong; Wind Waker is one of my favorite Zelda games, but it also strikes me as the one which will benefit the *least* from the remake because of the art style, even after updating the textures to HD.

Remakes should ONLY be considered if a game meets at least two of these three criteria:

1.) It is a game which is not aging well. Either the graphics or the control scheme make the game unplayable to new players.

2.) It is a game with a cult following who want to play the game again.

3.) Content is either improved or added into the remake.

Ocarina? It's aging decently, but could be ported easily to the 3DS via emulator, so I'd argue they didn't update the content enough to justify the remake. Wind Waker? HA! The cel-shaded graphics don't look washed out compared to either Skyward Sword or Twilight Princess, and the control scheme is almost identical. There is absolutely no need for this remake; just port the game over to the e-shop and sell it for $10-15 so it undercuts the used Wind Waker copies hovering around $20. Maybe add some additional sidequest material if you're feeling generous.

That said, there is another game which easily fits the first two criteria. In fact, it blows WW out of the water in those regards.

A Link to the Past.

An icon of Zelda games with a cult following which remains unplayed because so many players (like me) can't get over playing a 2D game. It practically screams the need for a remake.

What I would have done:

Remake ALttP for 3DS
Recreate* MM for Wii U
Port Ocarina to 3DS and Wii U e-shop.

*By "recreate" I mean a remake which goes back to the drawing board to improve the game's gameplay and script. Remakes typically have little or nothing "creative" done to their content.

What Nintendo did:

Remake Ocarina for 3DS
Remake of Wind Waker for Wii U
???

Definitely not enough for me to be able to hop on anything. I've kept my GameCube for a reason.

They already made a remake of A Link to the Past.

It was called Ocarina of Time. And The Wind Waker. And Twilight Princess. And Skyward Sword.

I used to think Nintendo remaking Link to the Past would be a lazy move on their part. But really, it would be a lot harder than what they're doing now. I've posted my crank opinion of remakes here too many times now, and it goes back at least to '04 with Super Mario 64 DS... its a way to make easy money, which Nintendo needs at the moment.

Super Mario 64 DS was actually nice for a Nintendo remake because they actually added new stuff to it. I'd like Wind Waker to get that kind of treatment with actual new stuff instead of just another Ocarina of Time 3D. I mean, OoT3D was nice because not everyone got a chance to pick up Master Quest on the Gamecube, so that was new for a lot of people. But it didn't add much besides that.

Honestly though, Nintendo is cherry picking the titles that the fans practically drool over and gives 'em a polish and a new package for a new system. Yes the graphics are improved upon drastically but it all feels hollow and cheap. These games didn't need to be remade, it was all done because Nintendo heard all the overly nostalgic fans yap on about how "perfect" these games were (I say this because all games have issues with them, no matter how well received they are) and thought they could score some points with the fan base while making a tidy profit on the side.

I think I have a better understanding as to why Square-Enix refuses to remake FFVII, despite the outcry from the fans.

For all the disappointment how will this sell? Fantastically. The problem isn't with the company. Of course they'll pander when there is a market for it.

Well, the real reason the big N is doing it is because Wind Waker is one of Zelda's major titles...and the Wii U doesn't have GC backwards compatibility.

It helps that Ocarina of Time 3D did well, too.

They already made a remake of A Link to the Past.

It was called Ocarina of Time. And The Wind Waker. And Twilight Princess. And Skyward Sword.

Eh...sort of. Similar? Yes, but Zelda games have always been that way to a fault, with the possible exceptions of Zelda II and Majora's Mask. I've played enough of ALttP to say that Ocarina was not a 3D version of it. Among other notable differences, Ocarina's script was substantially simpler.

A Link to the Past had a lot of backstory and lore that went on before the actual events took place. It had this entire grand history set in place, the history of the golden realm, Ganon's origins being explained for the first time (although briefly), the Master Sword, the seven sage's seal and it's long term effects and how the darkness of these bygone ages begins to once again creep into the present. Link learns more about his heritage as he goes further into his journey about the knight's/hero's bloodline and about the ancient Hylia race. And it's a lot to take in and there are so many questions.

But Ocarina of Time is different because there is no history set in place. Sure we have the creation story and the Origins of the Triforce but that is it. But I'm not too upset about this because the events of OoT feature many of the legends that are mentioned in A Link to the Past. This time we are making the historical events of the older games come to pass and when you think about it in the grand scheme of things, that's really exciting. And a lot of the newer Zelda titles have featured that same angle, that these game stories are doing a part in writing that history as a new Link on a new adventure.

I don't think there should be a remake to A Link to the Past only because I feel that remakes for the sake of nostalgia are a terrible idea. If anything, I'd like to see new adventures that take place further down the timeline. We have our decline of Hyrule, perhaps we can see it's restoration.

Yeah, I'm not really excited for a Wind Waker remake. I already have Wind Waker on my Gamecube. If I want to play it again, I can just do that. Same for OoT, really. And Link to the Past doesn't really need a remake, either. If you took it out of 2D, then it's not really Link to the Past, is it? It's deisgned from a 2D perspective. To change to 3D, all the puzzles and enemies and so on would have to be redesigned, and you just wouldn't end up with the same game. You'd probably end up with something more like Ocarina.

Perhaps they could have tided us over until the new game with a new Four Swords Adventures type thing. Remember how in the original you played on screen and then went onto the Gameboy Advance screen for going underground and stuff? Isn't that exactly what you can do with the WiiU controller?

Four Swords wouldn't work as well on Wii U since there's only one or two GamePads. At least not in the way FSA did.
