This is going to sound like a strange, petty thing to say, but thank you for using the western names for your scanlations, rather than, say, using the name "Dal Blue" with an asterisk or something. I hate it when fan-translated stuff does that.

The Sages

The original design was meant to be reminiscent of Rauru, as seen to the right.
Surely, the mask that conceals his face is meant to hide the fact that he looks like Rauru.

I may scan the relevant page as well later.

Thanks a lot. I'm kinda confused which design they're talking about there, since the one who actually wears robes that look like Rauru's seems to have a human face instead of a mask...or maybe it's just a less obvious mask.

Mhm, it took me quite a while to notice that too; it's a lot more difficult to spot than Onox's Gerudo symbol. I suppose it further shows their connection to Twinrova.

Yeah, I much prefer the top left Veran design over her final one, personally. And they sadly don't explain why they originally made Byrne look like a dog, but I suppose it may be because he's a Lokomo warrior. As you'll see in these scans, some early Lokomo designs weren't as human as the ones we finally got:

Another interesting thing to note is that early Ilia designs looked a lot like Saria and had a picture of Navi on her forehead. Apparently, they were both based on similar concepts, in that they both worried a lot.

I find it interesting how Ilia had some earlier designs similar to Malon, and others similar to Saria. Judging by her name and her relationship as Link's childhood friend/big sister figure, I always thought she was somewhat based on Saria from OoT.

The ALttP concept art is really interesting. Was ALttP originally going to have a futuristic cyber-punk setting? And does this canonically mean that Zelda is shorter than Peach? I always figured it be the other way around because I always imagined Hylians as being these tall nordic types.

Possibly. The text on that page does say that the design was intentionally Sci-Fi-styled. However, it's a bit ambiguous on whether or not that particular style was ever meant to be implemented or if it was just something they drew for fun.
