I thought that the news on the main site would be enough, but looking through Davogones' old topic about "The Minish Cap" text dumps and noticing in the other topic on this board I might as well put here what I got so far:
  • Oracle of Ages / Seasons
All European languages plus comparison table
  • The Wind Waker
All Euro languages plus comparison table (still need to do the Japanese dump).
  • Four Swords Adventures
All Euro languages plus comparison table and the Japanese dump (If I can find a way to merge Shift-JIS with ASCII I could make a Japanese/English comparison).
  • Twilight Princess
All Euro languages (still need to do the Japanese dump). Note that I did make a comparison table, but it's 2000 pixels wide and therefore a bit too big to be of any use...
  • Phantom Hourglass
All languages (Euro/US/Japanese) plus comparison tables
  • Spirit Tracks
English / French / Spanish + Comparison table (no Japanese as of now)
Also I did a Tingle Rosy Rupeeland dump, but I dunno if I'm going to post that...

I always wondered, are there Japanese text dumps for The Legend of Zelda and Zelda II: The Adventure of Link? Never found this anywhere but I guess it'd be pretty interesting to see what the game quotes originally meant before they were translated into heavily compressed English text.

I just wanted to say that all your work with the textdumps and also the loads of new images in the gallery is appreciated very much!:) That way, ZL can always retain its high quality.

And as soon as you upload the Japanese text of TP, you'll be worshipped like a god!!! :D

Can you get us a "sample" of the Japanese TP text dump? The text in Lanayru's vision, specifically? That's the part I wish to get re-translated the most urgently (though also that line in which Auru tells us the mirror has been used to banish criminals... but I don't want to be a pest)

Oh and... what Jumbie said.

Text dump of those kind are processed as one part. It's either the entire dump or nothing (I can hardly even read katakana, so how am I supposed to find such a specific part XD ).

Your best bet would be doing a search for specific phrases you would know (such as the names), or going off a screenshot of the Japanese version in that area. Otherwise, you're just shooting blindly.

Also, I can't understand why there's so much love for the Japanese version of the dumps... it's just text.

What looks like unnecessary junk to one person may be very valuable information to another.

You do realize you're posting in the storyline forum right? It should be pretty easy to figure out why from there... but I'll spell it out: if there is any continuity intended by the programmers in these games, then the original Japanese version (untouched by people who had no part in the creative process that originated the game's story) is where it may be found ;)

And there we have Towairaito Purinsesu in txt and html formats.

Strange, I used exactly the same decoder and yet, the Japanese game seems to use red a lot more than the other languages.

I don't know who will, but I'm sure someone will ^_^

Rather I wonder if the English version can be used to locate determined lines in this...

Yay! It's Christmas today!! :D Thank you so much, and so soon even!

Nice....but...who the hell is going to translate it?

Me, for example! ;)
Not all of it of course, but parts which are uncertain and ambiguous in the English version (for example: Lanayru's vision, Ganondorf's execution, Auru's desert knowledge...). And of course, I will take requests should people have some.

That is what I'm at right now. I'll get the translation up as soon as I'm finished.

Zethar was an excellent translator, I wonder what he's up to these days.

Once again, TMC gives origin stories for things that already have origins!

TWW:

"Say, do you want to try cutting it, too,
[player_name]? You'd be surprised at the
things people drop in the grass. It's
like hunting for treasure!
Except... Without some kind of grass-cutting
tool, you can't cut the grass. Sorry, buddy."

"People leave the darnedest things in the
grass, so if you go to the trouble of cutting
it, you get to keep whatever you find."

That would likely be the "common sense" explanation after people stop believing in the Minish.

...I wish we had a Japanese dump of either Oracle. I would love to have the combined ending re-translated.

Or the Minish could be the "fairy tale" explanation. (Some of the Picori legends are undoubtedly so.)

Yes of course, they were clearly lying to Link when saying they are the ones who secretly place stuff for humans to find.

I have a third explanation; the Minish hiding things is true, but it's a bit of fun to be found in TMC's story alone and doesn't have any wider meaning related to the timeline. It's more like a Rudyard Kipling "Just-So" story ("How the grass came to be filled with money") than an important piece of mythology.

"Sometimes it's a flower seed, and sometimes it's a stone. We hide our lucky items in all sorts of unexpected places. But the real trick is making it tough for humans to notice!" - Forest Minish

Now why don't people check things before they talk rubbish?

That's what I always thought. And anyway, there is nothing saying both stories can’t be true - even with the Minish, people are bound to drop or leave things a-plenty on the ground, so it’s not much to argue about.

Of course, I agree, but I figured that was a given and that we were debating what the general explanation was.
