While skimming through the text files on the Twilight Princess ISO, I've found some interesting beta text.

A lot of you will probably remember the magic bar shown in a few screenshots prior to the release of the final version.

Well, magic power was apparently used to transform Link into his wolf form:
"Talk to Midna. You don't have any magic power....You know you can't turn into a.beast without it!"

Not too groundbreaking, although it's nice to know what it would've been used for.
I'm glad they dropped that gameplay mechanic before the release - I didn't miss the magic bar in Twilight Princess for a second and think it would've been very annoying to always have to look for magic power just because the bar is empty.
There's also a beta item called "Magic Potion", the German version calls it - as in previous series installments - "Grünes Elixier" ("Green Potion").

That's interesting. I wonder how you would have obtained the magic bar in the first place.

I would be surprised if the Magic Armour and the Spin Attack did not also use magic, and maybe even the Lantern. Still, it's interesting to know that Wolf Link originally used magic (or rather the transformation, anyway).

I personally quite like the Magic Meter, I'd kinda prefer that to having the Magic Armour eat up Rupees. Ah well, it's not a major issue.

They really need to bring back Bombos, Ether and Quake though. Link needs more magical attacks.

Maybe these text dumps will make your search a bit easier. They're all formatted and completely edited in html as well.

Probably, I always ran out of rupees because of the magic armor.

A very interesting contribution!^^

Hm, ISO.. is that inside the game's code?

But that wasn't too bad in the games before either, was it? I did miss the bar, like Fyxe said it's a bit sad that Link isn't a frequent magic user anymore as he was back in AoL and ALttP, and OoT to some extent.

That's interesting. I wonder how you would have obtained the magic bar in the first place.

Good question... The game wasn't exactly brimming full with Great Fairies... Perhaps the first Light Spirit was instead supposed to give the bar to Link?

I was quite upset over the lack of magic bar/attacks, but if the wolf's all they were going to use it for, then I'm actually kind of glad that they got rid of it.

A lot of the bast items in the entire series are magic related...the quake/bombos/ether trio were a blast, and the spin attack should always require magic - the slow recharge was a fine substitution though.

I bet the Dominion Rod would have been magic related, and thusly a more important part of the game. Oh well, it was fun while it lasted...

It could be that the Light Spirits gave you special abilities in the beta version, as there's nearly a complete absence of Great Fairies this time around.

They really need to bring back Bombos, Ether and Quake though. Link needs more magical attacks.

The three spells in Ocarina of Time were not that bad, it's just that I hardly used them. I wouldn't mind the revival of the magic medals from A Link to the Past, though.

They always gave out so many magic jars in every single grass pile that your meter never ran out anyway, though. it was more to limit the usage of magic arrows in boss fights, but even then they usually put a stash of magic pots somewhere. Still, you had to transform into a wolf sooo many times... that would've been awkward.
... still, fire arrows and magic spells wouldve been nice. Or being able to give someone green chu jelly in return for uhh.. green.. sculptures.. or the names of enemies..

There are, as previously mentioned, a number of items that could conceivably required magic without any serious detraction from gameplay. I like having a magic bar because it makes me feel like I'm the one doing stuff, rather than being some guy who happens to have cooler stuff. Of course, when your magic is refilled by little green jars the feeling is lost, but still.

Magic would be a good way of balancing out a multiplayer experience, if big N ever tries that on a console with the Zelda series again (not saying they will, or even that such a game would be good... I'd bet it'd sell well though). Magic pots would be an easy way to control players, make them juggle resources, even with singleplayer situations, such as bossfights. Perhaps even more spread out than that- if one area has lots of magic, you're incited to use the Fire Arrow, while in an area where magic is scarce but arrows are everywhere you find it more prudent to use the less powerful normal Arrows.

I would just like to state that I like the idea of a Magic Meter for items that are not required in any way to beat the game. Otherwise it just becomes another vector for frustration.

For the most part, LttP did it fine. Granted, having the lantern use it seemed silly (especially when it did nothing without lighting torches, which I always thought was stupid)... eh.

It could always be reasoned out that some items (e.g. Fire Rod) contain their own magical power, and other items (e.g. Medallions) require Link's power to work.

But, hey, what do I know. Wheeee!

Forget ALttP's magic (good though it was), I want a return to AoL's spells. Actually cast by and learnt by Link; really shows that he is a Hylain, and capable of using magic, rather than using it secondhand through other devices. And you know you want a 3D fairy spell.

I think Nintendo canceled the Magic-Bar because they decided to make the wii game. As we all know we can't load the sword on the Wii TP...
I miss the Magic-Bar... :linkT_T:

I highly doubt this is the reason, considering that the screenshot clearly displays the Wii version and the magic meter at the same time. From what I gathered from the thread, it was removed in the late, late stages of the game.

Hm, you're right.
Maybe they realised that Link has to turn into a Wolf very often...and with this magic-bar it would be very hard.
But i would have liked to see a magic-bar...maybe for the wolf/Midna attack, and for a vew of the 7 sword technics...
I want to cheat-aktivate it
