I'm going to admit something. I freaking love wigs. They are so Mich more fun than they should be! And once you get over the initial fear of cutting them, it's even better!
It's only $35 at Arda and all I used were scissors and a $6 feathering razor from Sally's. Oh and a can of really cheap hair spray and pomade with a hair dryer to set it; all stuff I already had lying around.
From experience from changing my hair color and cut every few months for about two years straight, it's a hell of a lot cheaper than dye and lasts longer. Hair spray the crap out of that sucker, hit it with a little heat, and that hair style stays put until you wash it.
Plus unlike real hair if you mess up the cut, just sew the fiber back in or if it's unsalvageable buy a new one.
All the fun of hair styling with none of the regret!

Nice quality wigs also have adjustable elastic inside so it fits comfortably. You can also sew in wig clips by hand really easily which will likely be my weekend project. Those clip to the cap and your hair so it doesn't slide off. Really good for heavy wigs. But once you have it pinned or clipped on right, it won't go anywhere.
I've walked around conventions wearing a wig for around sixteen hours without too much of a problem. Took it off for a few minutes in the middle of the day just because I got really hot in the crowds of people wearing a full FMA military uniform.
For the best versatility, get the ones that say they have a "skin top" or something similar. All that means is it has a flesh colored plastic scalp where the fiber comes out so you can part the hair more naturally without exposing the wefts or your head underneath.
You can do some really amazing stuff with them and if you add structure underneath like foamcore you can do some downright crazy stuff. Or just with a can of hair spray!
Google "Cloud Strife wig" and I'm pretty sure almost all of those keep their shape using only hairspray and maybe a little glue or clear silicon sealant on the spiked tips to keep them from seperating. People get all sorts of crazy.

I love wigs but don't have much luck with long ones. They tangle a bit every time I put them on or take them off. I've never tried using hair products on one.. not really sure where to start with styling a wig. Mine are... I guess sort of medium quality. They came from an actual wig store, but they're synthetic and just have the wefts.. no "scalp" on them. Difficult to really brush them because the hair breaks too easily. I have pretty good luck with short wigs though., aside from the fact that they get hot and itchy after a few hours.

A real wig is a world of difference from a cheap Halloween wig. They're meant to be worn regularly rather than just for a day and are significantly better quality and less itchy and uncomfortable. They still can get hot and itchy, especially if you have a sensitive scalp, but it's nowhere near as bad as with a cheap one. Also, a wig cap is essential. The wefts will drive you crazy without one. Those are all good points but I'm not sure, for me, that I could get past the idea of it being a wig lol. However I fully admit this is probably mostly due to only having experience with like cheap Halloween wigs and not actual quality ones. It does suck that for me to get my pink hair I had to pretty much destroy it. Is the wig comfortable? I guess I would worry that I'd constantly fidget with it to make it feel right.
With my long wigs I detangle them with a wide-tooth comb to reduce the breakage. I find that my American brand-name wigs break and shed a LOT because the thin fibers, while they look and feel more natural, are just very weak and don't hold up to brushing and combing well no matter how gentle I am.I love wigs but don't have much luck with long ones. I've actually had better luck with Chinese eBay wigs around the $40 range, the ones I've purchased are made of stronger fibers and don't break so easily, and they also happen to have a lot more strands stuffed onto the wig which gives a ton of volume compared to the American ones, and also means that they can withstand a little shedding. Of course the downside is that it tends to not look quite as natural, and you're always taking a little bit of a gamble when you shop no-name on eBay.

I'll have to scan what I'm talking about since it got Katie Bair's world of wigcraft book when it was still offered. My wigs have stayed in much better condition since I started using her technique. Don't lose as much fiber or get as much breakage. If you do a lot with wigs and have an opportunity to get a hold of her book, jump on it! It's out of print now and has all sorts of advanced techniques too like foamcore and double wigs.
And I used to use Amphigory and a few places on e-bay but I definitely will be using Arda from now on. The fiber quality is amazing and the number of wefts plus the amount of fiber on the wefts is more than I typically see without being bulky. The only thing that'd improve them is more wigs with a full skin scalp but they also provide lace front wigs for a good price so there's that too.
And Hana's right about the Halloween wigs. You can definitely feel the difference of quality in the fiber too. Halloween wigs have this plastically Barbie doll hair quality to it that tends to kink and lose its shape with even gentle handling. Wigs made of higher quality fiber have a silkier texture that doesn't kink with regular handling and keeps its shape unless a good amount of heat is applied to reshape it.
Basically there's no comparison between the two.
The only time I'd use a Halloween wig is if I were ever to do my witch costume from Left 4 Dead and need that unnatural and damaged texture.

So I went to the Texas Renassiance Festival yesterday, dressed as a legionary as always. This time, however, I was spotted by the local legion and was asked to march in the parade with them.
I'm the one roughly in the middle of the picture with the red crest on the helmet. Sorry the only good one with me in it was from behind
It was a pretty cool experience, I might end up joining officially.

Brilliant. Or perhaps they there to model for a Roman-themed painting. Renaissance culture loved the Roman Empire.

A Renaissance weekend at a Roman festival would be more interesting, since it'd basically be period sci-fi.

Not exactly my most flattering picture, but Wilson crawled onto the back of the lounge like he was a kitty and turned himself into my pillow. Not pictured: his happy wagging tail.

Yeah, the Jedi and Ninjas that I used to see there every year were the first sign I needed to make a point to do extra reading and learning out of school.
