Hm, this is four years ago, I think. The 44th Venture Scout Unit, about to climb the highest mountain in Ireland. Most of my pictures I'm holding the camera, but here I must have given it to Mr. Brown (or Phil) to take a photo.

Showsni, you look so much like Harry Potter to me (not Dan Radcliffe, but the actual character in the books)... XDDD

We set off in the school minibus (our VSU was kind of attached to the school; the Scout Hut's in the school grounds, and the leaders are teachers), and arrived on a pretty overcast morning.

There was quite a long, gently rising walk up to the mountain proper from where we'd parked. Pretty green, but still rather grey and miserable weather, though not actually raining.

There was a loch or two once we'd got quite high. Soon enough we could see the main bulk of the mountain ahead:

First we had to climb the Devil's Ladder. Given the really wet and foggy conditions, though it wasn't actually raining, this was a bit like climbing up a waterfall. Got pretty much soaked through, climbing from rock to rock in a very steep section. In the above photo, it's the section straight up to the lowest bit in between the peaks. Here's a photo looking back down the ladder:

Yeah, not very good visibility. It was very windy.

From the top of the Devil's Ladder, you could also look out over the other side:

We carried on climbing, walking on loose stones from carin to cairn. This bit was really exhausting now, and I was pretty much worn out by the time we reached the top. I actually felt pretty hot up there, though the others said it was freezing... There's a big cross on the top.

It must have been really hard to get it up there. The visibility was practically nil, and all we could see was grey in any direction.

So then we came down again. Here I am at the bottom:

Mountaineering isn't about the height of the mountain climbed - it's about the magnificence of the beard you grow in the process.Bah, that's a foothill, not a mountain! Mountains are at least 10,000 feet tall and covered with snow!

Totally jealous that you got to go to Ireland!
The best I've done on mountain climbing was when I went to visit my parents for Christmas. We drove up to the highest place you could drive on Mount Rainer, a place that was called Paradise. Then we went out and climbed around for a bit...course this was during the record snowfall for Seattle part...so everything was kinda...white first pic shows that. The only shot of me while we climbed was from my little sister, who was behind me. She took the second pic (I am the short one in front). That by the way was on a recently cleared out path, and we still sunk up to our knees at times

From someone that has worked at Philmont for 3 years. That is so true Alastair
Philmont is one of the high adventure camps for Boy Scouts in the US.
There are 3 camps :
Philmont in the mountains where you hike for 10 days
Sea Base in FL where you play out on the ocean for 10 days
and Canoe base in Mn and Canada where you canoe for 10 days.
