Doesn't mean I haven't been thinking this campaign over in my head for ages. For those of you that don't know, "Stop Snitchin'" is a campaign designed around not cooperating with authority figures in fear of retaliation from outside sources. The shirts have been around my area for ages (Maryland/DC area). The idea in itself seems idiotic to me. If you don't try to improve the streets by giving the police useful information, then it just gives the message to criminals that there's nothing in their way and to youth that crime is the most successful route to go down. Why this ideal gets glorified is beyond me and it shames me not only as a black person but as a human being to think that people not only condone but advocate this campaign.

Thoughts?

Frickin' retarded. Whatever fool decided it was a good idea to market this should be put in jail along with the criminals he (inadvertantly or no) protecting.

Wow...

That's just...

Wow.

I'm speechless at the stupidity of this idea.

Like, I don't like police much. I really don't, but that's for other reasons. But they can't do their job if they don't have all the info they need.

The job of the police is to help anyone in need. Doesn't matter who you are. If you're in distress, they'll help you. Even if you've had problems with them in the past.

It's stupid that people would want to endanger the lives of others by refusing to cooperate with police.

I can understand not wanting to rat out a family member or friend or something, but the idea of absolutely refusing to cooperate with the police when people's lives may very well be at stake is just fucking irresponsible. Police exist to keep people safe, and if you are standing as an obstacle to them then you're just as bad as those who commit the crimes.

As much as I may agree with you... free speech.

People have the right to say completely idiotic and subtly volitile things. Unless the campaign is shown to hugely increase crime rates,
the government has no power (or should have no power) to respond.

Of course, the ideal way to combat this is to start a counter-campaign, emphasizing the glamour or glory of helping others and portraying criminals rather more grimly.

In cases of minor infractions, I say "Stop snitchin'" is a perfectly acceptable statement. Some laws, in my opinion, are unnecessary and too regulatory of what I am allowed to do in the privacy of my own home. In cases where lives or property are being threatened, however, I strongly feel that anyone with information should be cooperating with the police as much as possible.

The only case where I had been questioned by the police wsa when my room mate had been caught with marijuana and the police where asking if I knew anything about it. While I don't agree with smoking pot (poersonally I think it's stupid but whatever) I'm not the type of person who narcs on a friend or family member. That is unless they're doing some serious drugs but this was just pot with nothing else added.

I'm kinda conflicted with the police. Usually I try to avoid them but I just feel sometimes they prejudge me on my ethinicity. I've had police accuse me smoking cocaine when all I had was a runny nose. Oh, because I'm Puerto Rican I must be a drug addict. I hate drugs, and being accused of using them just because I'm brown makes me not want to cooperate with the cops even more.

That said, if was something more than a minor infraction I'd share information. Either way, not snitchin to the cops isn't something should be glorified. I never once felt heroic for not narcing on my room mate. I was a coward. I'm not trying to justify my actions. But if had done things over I would have still done the same thing.

Such law biding citizens. F@%k the police! I say don't tell them anything unless it's a violent offender or something. I don't really trust the police.

Woo, fuck the po-lice (because they all must act the same, apparently). Fight The Man. Stop snitchin'.

I really do try to have a positive outlook on humanity, but then I hear something like that and the resolve begins to break.

Maybe it's the internal desire to live wild and with no rules. Which is always fun until you fall onto the receiving end of trouble.

This ranks pretty high on my list of incredibly fucking stupid statements.

I'd like to take a minute to quote a guy I knew in high school. In general,

Cops keep strange people from breaking into my house at night and killing me. Go cops!

Seriously. I'm of the mind that anyone who puts their life on the line every damn day just by putting on a uniform and walking out the door earns my respect.

Well. Lying to authority figures is kinda against the law. So I kinda gotta go with the law there.

I have a police officer in my family. Funny, intelligent man, very warm and kind. Doesn't eat donuts- he is always in the kitchen cooking (usually Italian dishes, as he's proud of his heritage). I can't dislike a system that includes men like him.

I think the Boondocks did a good job explaining the issue. It might seem "cool" to stop snitchin' but that all falls to pieces once something of yours gets stolen and someone doesn't tell you who did it.
