Long story short, as of now there is no "official" timeline. The only thing most people can agree on is that the basic structure of the timeline eras is "OoT - LttP - LoZ". After that, it gets confusing. For example, many people argue about the placement of LA, as it can fall pretty much anywhere. WW brought even more controversy to the timeline; many put it directly after OoT as suggested by the backstory, while others believe that because of Hyrule's destruction it must take place at the end, while others feel the ending of OoT actually split the timeline, and that the "LTTP" universe continues in one universe and that the other timeline leads to WW. Then come the Four Swords series; they vary so far from the rest of the series that some have even put them in their own seperate timeline, although most therorists spread them throughout the timeline or lump them together in between any two eras of games, or at the beginning or end. Many (including myself) also place TMC first for a number of reasons. Add in the controvrsy of Ganon's various deaths and revivals, whether or not the Triforce is the Light Force, the Sleeping Zelda backstory from AoL, and you've got a thoroughly confusing set of games.
Nobody really agrees on the whole timeline, and it is up to each individual theorist to try to determine the events for his or herself, so maybe someday the points raised by all of us may contribute to one great complete timeline, or at least narrow it down.

It's not yet certain how all of the games work together (if at all), but there are a few distinct story arcs.
Key
- A short time passes
--- Generations pass
-(--) Either of the above
Original
Ocarina of Time - Majora's Mask --- A Link to the Past - Link's Awakening --- The Legend of Zelda - The Adventure of Link
New
Ocarina of Time - Majora's Mask --- The Wind Waker
Four Sword
The Minish Cap --- Four Swords -(--) Four Swords Adventures
Oracles
Oracle of Ages and Oracle of Seasons*
*These can go in either order, you can continue the story from one to the other using a password system. It seems as though this story could take place in the original timeline, sometime (generations, most likely) after A Link to the Past (and Link's Awakening). It's also possible that the Oracle games lead in to Link's Awakening, even though Link's Awakening was originally a follow-up to A Link to the Past. It's also possible for the Oracle games to take place generations after The Adventure of Link.

Read the first post of http://forums.legend...t=timeline laws
That should give you a grounding of what is established canon in the timeline by most if not all of the LAers...
