After you have leveled one of your three statistics to its fullest, Level 8. It will show that the next level up for that stat will be Level 9 at 9000 experience points. If you collect 9000 experience points, you wont get an upgrade, but rather a free guy....... if you save the game do you keep the guys or you have to start with 3 lives like usual

I think that every time you start the game, you start with three lives. However, if you level up all the way before you beat any of the palaces or get any of the 1-ups in the overworld, you can pick them all up on your way to the Great Palace. I usually have about 14 lives entering the path to the Great Palace, and there is that extra 1-up inside the Palace. I usually beat it with about two or three lives to spare. I don't really like being all that cautious.
About levelling up...
My favorite spot is right outside New Kasuto (the one hidden in the forest). Weak enemies give you 310 points per battle. I personally would rather use the automatic level-ups in the palaces for when I need 9000 points (for extra lives) and points from defeating enemies when I need less (for levelling up).
