So, we've discussed this casually, but now let's see where everyone officially stands on it.
Move to ProBoards. We have a ProBoards backup site established at legendsalliance.boards.net. People have already started threads and discussions there. We could fully move over there for free. There would likely be no server downtime on ProBoards, and if there is, it would only be for site maintenance. This would mean:
- A new url address
- A fresh, blank-slate restart of LA
- This site (forums.legendsalliance.com) will be archived and left up for however long Khuffie wants.
- This site can also be fully backed up using a mySQL app built into the ACP. All posts, attachments, everything.
- So, a copy of 'Old LA' will be preserved.
- We will leave a redirect link here to the new forums, to lure in any old returning members.
- Moving to ProBoards is free, and we don't have to pay server upkeep.
Stay here. We either take no actions, leaving us on the current moody server, or find a way to directly assume ownership of LA. The second option would mean negotiating with Khuff to take over the domain name ($) and pay for a new, more stable server that we could personally maintain ($). We would then have to successfully transfer LA onto that new server. This would mean:
- Risk continual, intermittent downtime (do nothing).
- Transfer ownership of the domain and forums to one of the admins / volunteer member (take ownership).
- Acquire a new server and move this version of LA there.
- Members would either pitch in to maintain LA, or we'd rotate who pays the upkeep.
Moving to ProBoards is simple and the forums will have regular updates, but we risk losing old members who might return after a long hiatus. Transferring this version of LA onto a new server is more complicated and time consuming, but will theoretically preserve LA as-is. We can also just take no action whatsoever.
I will leave this poll and discussion thread open for 1 week to ensure everyone gets a say (Vet's on vacation -- SKEGNESS -- but will return by then).
