So, we've discussed this casually, but now let's see where everyone officially stands on it.

Move to ProBoards. We have a ProBoards backup site established at legendsalliance.boards.net. People have already started threads and discussions there. We could fully move over there for free. There would likely be no server downtime on ProBoards, and if there is, it would only be for site maintenance. This would mean:

  • A new url address
  • A fresh, blank-slate restart of LA
  • This site (forums.legendsalliance.com) will be archived and left up for however long Khuffie wants.
  • This site can also be fully backed up using a mySQL app built into the ACP. All posts, attachments, everything.
  • So, a copy of 'Old LA' will be preserved.
  • We will leave a redirect link here to the new forums, to lure in any old returning members.
  • Moving to ProBoards is free, and we don't have to pay server upkeep.

Stay here. We either take no actions, leaving us on the current moody server, or find a way to directly assume ownership of LA. The second option would mean negotiating with Khuff to take over the domain name ($) and pay for a new, more stable server that we could personally maintain ($). We would then have to successfully transfer LA onto that new server. This would mean:

  • Risk continual, intermittent downtime (do nothing).
  • Transfer ownership of the domain and forums to one of the admins / volunteer member (take ownership).
  • Acquire a new server and move this version of LA there.
  • Members would either pitch in to maintain LA, or we'd rotate who pays the upkeep.

Moving to ProBoards is simple and the forums will have regular updates, but we risk losing old members who might return after a long hiatus. Transferring this version of LA onto a new server is more complicated and time consuming, but will theoretically preserve LA as-is. We can also just take no action whatsoever.

I will leave this poll and discussion thread open for 1 week to ensure everyone gets a say (Vet's on vacation -- SKEGNESS -- but will return by then).

I am leaning towards staying and paying for upkeep. Though I am still not fully committed.

What about doing both? Moving to ProBoards, and also transfer of ownership of legendsalliance.com, which we can use as a hub to direct to the forums, also possibly to host our content that we want to put on a website/blog. And we keep forums.legendsalliance.com as it is, archived for posterity with a redirect notice for returning members. I don't see how Khuff would have any responsibility or reason to keep the site up once we're no longer here... Does anyone have an estimate on the cost for that?

My major problem with migrating now is that near as I can tell, the Proboards forum is undetectable with google, while this is quite detectable. Migrating right now or in the immediate future might be counterproductive if the goal is more traffic. And speaking of traffic, am I the only one who's noticed all the guest traffic we've been getting lately?

I...don't know. I think we'd be better off using the proboards as a second bomb shelter until at least the few of us planning content have a backlog and the landing website which links to the forum is up. Once we're there? The proboards is definitely the way to go for stability. Until then, migrating is probably premature.

I call shenanigans.  I almost didn't see this poll because I've already mostly migrated to ProBoards.  Stop trying to silence my vote!

As I said before, I can host LA if it comes to that. I'm already paying for hosting through Bluehost for Gamehiker.com, which is little more than an archive at this point. The package I'm stuck in lets me host more than just the one site. If for some reason it ever picks up in activity due to our various ideas and ventures, then it may be needed to lock at something more robust, but what I already have is more than enough for our level of activity.

Otherwise I kind of like the Proboards. It's very compact. I like compact.

My place is here with my brother. Years since I met Khuffie in Melora's forums and followed him into Legends Alliance, those memories were forever embedded within me. But I respect all former friends' decisions here and let them do as they choose.

I choose to stay, but I also choose to retire. I expect this account to have fade away after a time since I'm a lot more active in Gaia Online with my wife. The name "Junior Rubay" should've long been lost in the shadows by now.

My 999th post since joining LA...

Thank you for posting Junior Rubay.

As for me, I'll go where you guys go. Be it here or to the new boards. I'll miss the trappings and the memories here but I'll still be a part of this community. As Pharos in the beginning and as JRPomazon now.

A part of me would definitely rather stay here, but I'm for whatever is best for the health of the community and the chance of us being more then just a comforting holding pattern. I've been here for half my life at this point, no point in leaving everyone entirely now.

@Masa: If we end up making an LA website like we've talking about, would you be willing to host it?

It would be no extra burden for me, so I'm willing. If it ever reaches a point where we need to look at a dedicated server, we'd have to re-evaluate where things stand, but I'm fairly certain what I have would've handled LA's load even during its heyday.

After giving the poll some thought over the weekend, I ended up voting for migrate to ProBoards. The idea of having to start over sounds a bit intimidating at first, but I think it would also give us a chance to breath some life back into this place. I also recall someone mentioning that our package with iPB has become outdated, and has left the old boards a bit limited. If ProBoards is more up to date, and can give the admins a bit more freedom with the site, then I would say it's the better option.

However, I would say we shouldn't move just yet. Before we make it official, I would suggest that we elaborate a bit more on what LA's new front page should be. I really liked Lena's prototype should made awhile back, but I think we should look further into it, maybe establishing how the newsfeed will work and figure which members will be posting to it and what degrees of access they will have on it. I would also suggest that we finalize what to do with the old LA boards, and get into contact with Khuffie about it.

The extra time on moving would allow for us to finish up any unfinished business we have on the current LA, especially for my fellow Chroniclers.

RESULTS

20 people have voted within the allotted time. The results were overwhelmingly in favor of migrating to ProBoards and leaving this LA as an archive with a redirect link.

  • legendsalliance.boards.net will become our new home url. Please save it to your bookmarks now.

  • We will not archive this forum immediately -- you can still post, save vital data, browse old threads, and do whatever you need to do before we shut down main functions. Post on either forum as you see fit.

  • I expect to archive this forum at the end of October (tentative date).

  • We'll begin work on the LA website, which will launch after we've established ourselves on the ProBoards forum (to give it that lived in feel before we get new people joining).

  • I'll also get to work designing/downloading skins for the new forum.

  • A little goodbye memorial will be held when it comes time to archive LA.

After LA has been archived, will we be able to view threads at all? Profiles? PMs?

Yes, you will be able to view everything. We'll merely disable new posts and new registrations.

(Although you should personally back up important PMs regardless)

Ah well, I guess it's about time! Glad to see everyone's moving on! I won't be posting in the new forum but I might go there just to read as a guest. If I ever remember this forum later in life. Maybe by that time I might have become an old man.

Today's the last time I'm logging in this forum. I have finished checking my Private Messages (jeez, Khuffie! XD) and left everything in my profile to remain as it is for all eternity. I'm also here to have one last look at everyone I knew over the decade... all of you who have given me many memories. Especially those of you I have been with in the Windfall Island dorm.

Luck would have it, I still have my old LA signature. It reminds me of all those whom I consider to be the most valuable friends here, their rings collected as proof.  :)

JRFinalRings.jpg

If any of you do know of Melora's forum, History of Hyrule, there's a summarized saga I wrote there (and stored in my computer too) where this forum was known as "Legends Alliance Empire" under the rule of the major god, Khuffie. Very old, sentimental stuff.

Lastly, if any of you want to know where I'll be hanging out in my free time (when not playing games), I'll be in my Gaia Online account. The name's Falcon Starlight and I often have a golden fishing trophy next to my Gaia avatar. If not, you'd still recognize me through the blue visors my avatar has always worn. No one has ever seen his eyes for over 10 years.  ;)

With that, it's time to put the spirit of the one you knew as Junior Rubay to rest. Thank you for everything you've done over the years!

My 1,000th post since joining this forum a decade ago!

*salutes and gives a thumb up on the way out*
