So with the passing of the 30th anniversary of one of Nintendo's greatest franchises, and not even so much as a peep from the Big N themselves, many online have been sharing this recent fan remake of Metroid 2 as the next best thing. By using assets from Super Metroid and the GBA Metroid titles, it would seem that a small group of fans were able to recreate the beloved Gameboy title. I just started playing it tonight, and while I'm not very far just yet, it seems pretty solid so far. So if you're interested, why not give it a shot.

I'm about halfway through and it's unbelievably good. It's very much a Zero Mission style remake of the game, complete with new segments and neat little mechanics unique to this game. The game keeps throwing new surprises at me and I have embraced it with the same eager desire to explore and conquer as in any other previous Metroid game. And there are some legitimately challenging bosses! The game isn't unrelentingly punishing like some fangames tend to be, but this is definitely oldschool Nintendo hard in some places. I always liked the original Metroid II since it was my first game in the series I played, but this just builds on that game in every conceivable way. It's a blast.

EDIT: I just finished the game. Omega Metroids are very tough until you get the hang of them and holy moly, the Queen Metroid is a lot more aggressive this time around. I can definitely say this is just as good as any of the other 2D Metroids. It's more linear like the original was, but towards the last half it gives you an excellent system to transport you quickly from one area to the next for any backtracking you may want to do for powerups and such. I managed to clear it with 92% completion in just under six hours. Better players will be able to clear it much, much faster.

This has been very impressive so far.  It's amazing what a UI upgrade, better controls, and a map do for this game.

The Space Jump boss was amazing.

I was keeping track of this game for a long time, and wanted to try it.  Unfortunately, it's been taken down due to copyright issues.

There's torrents out there of it now, but I still have the zip file if anyone wants it. It sucks, but Nintendo gonna do what Nintendo gonna do.

Yup, that's copyright law for you.

Nintendo needs to buy this game and distribute it themselves.  It's that good, and a win-win-win outcome for Nintendo, gamers, and the guy who made this project.

I would enjoy a link to this, if it's not too much trouble.

The game has been great so far! I very well made fan game. I've just come across the Gamma Metroids, so I still have quite a way to go. Honestly, if the game's quality is this consistent throughout the whole campaign, I would love to see someone make a reproduction cartridge of it, I know I would buy one.

I was wondering how long it would take Nintendo to shut this down. Disappointed, but definitely not surprised. Nintendo has an iron fist when it comes to fan projects. Sad they never seem to catch them in development -- it would save the game makers considerable time and effort. But maybe also a good thing. This game will live on in shady torrents and private exchanges for years to come.

Speaking of, would someone PM that sweet sweet illegal download link? Metroid was never really one of my classic franchises, but I still like playing them every now and again.

So I'm in the end game now, based on the power-ups I have.  Omega Metroids terrify me.

One large complaint throughout this whole thing is that the hitboxes for Metroids are tiny.  So many missiles go to waste, and it's extra annoying when you compare the hitboxes to the original game.  Those Metroid tummies got incredibly small since the 90s.

They did, but the trade off is tighter controls and more precision with aiming. Omega Metroids are nightmares until you're able to master shooting them in the back after they dive at you. If the Metroids had the same hitboxes as in the Gameboy game, they'd be ridiculously easy.

Though I do waste a LOT of missiles and I had to backtrack to a savepoint after every single Omega Metroid just so I had enough to face another one, which was really tedious.

Yeah, I've started getting good at shooting the Omegas in the back.  The real danger with them is getting stuck in a corner, especially in the rooms with low ceilings.  I do the same thing with backtracking.  There is no way I'm going to subject myself to any more Omegas than I absolutely have to.

I finished it tonight.  Other than Metroid fights, and I accept the explanation that they would have been too easy otherwise, my biggest complaint is that there were a lot of long, barren areas to walk through, especially in the end game.  That could have been handled better.

As a sidenote, I never really liked Metroid 2. It's kind of the inverse of Metroid Fusion.  Whereas Metroid Fusion appeared to be linear in a very heavy-handed way, as the game progressed, it opened up more and more.  Meanwhile, Metroid 2 appears to be non-linear like the first game, but the world is divided up into discrete, gated chunks to a much further extent than any other 2D Metroid.  You never hit a point where you can just romp through areas using new abilities to pick up items that have been taunting you for hours.  Sequence breaking looks very guarded against.  AM2R was still Metroid 2 in that respect, so while it's a very very good fangame and leagues ahead of the original, being Metroid 2 holds it back.
