So, uhhh...... does anyone play? The game is popular for a reason. I'm really hooked on it, and I usually don't like multiplayer pvp games.

I'm playing on the Xbone.

My gamer tag if anyone doesn't already have me: Lenabot.

I've got it on PS4. Also, I bought a PS4 to play this game. Until recently, it was a secret to everyone.

JRPomazon is my PSN name.

Let's go guard and push some payloads.

Need a new video card since my current one has finally been bumped out of the old but workable category straight into obsolete.

But once we get the new card and one more stick of 8 gig memory SpiritAdept and I will be all over this thing. Probably him more than me so I'll post both screen names when we're ready.

We're drooling and it's nice to hear it's living up to the hype.

It's like a happy mesh of Team Fortress 2 and Mass Effect 3's multiplayer. No stat customization, but you have to assemble a balanced team with compatible skills if you want to really kick ass. And each character has very distinct functions. Some are better on certain maps, some work better with certain other characters, etc.

I'm eager to see how they'll build on the base game.

JERP, which characters do you prefer playing?

Overwatch was a game I passed on when I got my PS4's starting library. I've heard nothing but good things about it, but Wizards Games (my local shop) had a used game "buy 2, get 1 free" sale. Not only were no used copies of Overwatch available, but for more or less the same price I could pick up Shadow of Mordor, Mad Max, and the PS4 Valkyria Chronicles Remaster.

So...Overwatch will have to wait for a bit.

I try my hand at everyone so I won't overlook each of their capabilities, especially if they'd come in handy in certain situations. D.Va and Mercy have been pretty solid for me, D.Va can take a hit and I play Mercy because more times than not I'm the only one trying to keep my team alive. I personally want to be better with McCree and Tracer because I personally like those characters. Had a good couple rounds as Pharrah recently, basically Samus with a jetpack.

Unrelated, but has anyone found a counter to Junkrat?

Ranged:

Pharah: It's almost impossible to hit an airborne Pharah as Junkrat (I've tried).

Widowmaker / Hanzo: Safely pick him off from a distance. His grenades have limited range and poor accuracy.

Direct Assault:

D.Va: Her shields absorb his grenades. Activate shields, close range with the jets, blast his face off.

I killed Junkrat multiple times using this approach in my most recent match. Junkrat players tend to panic in close range combat.

Flanking:

McCree: Stun him, then fan the hammer. Only really works if you can catch him off-guard, though.

Tracer: She's fast enough to dodge most of his attacks and/or get you into a good firing position.

Reaper: The DPS on those shotgun can take him out in a few hits, provided you can warp in behind him.

I want to add to that list soldier 76 if you are good at tracking, he has better range than most people and a helix rocket and a couple of headshots are more than enough to take him out.  Genji works just like d.va if you are decent enough, but his shuriken fan helps with the aim thing you need

The gameplay trailers in the past looked sort-of underwhelming, but I'm willing to give it a shot eventually.  Is there a single-player mode or is it online-only?

Online only. It's strictly team-based pvp.

ALSO, EVERYONE I finally unlocked one of Mercy's viking skins and it was all I ever wanted and more. I also got Torbjorn's "I'M SVEEEEDISH" voice line. So, you know, that means I'm set for life.

How does everyone like Ana so far? I've played a couple decent matches with her. Her healing output isn't that great, but she's a pretty decent general support character. She fills that role better than, say, Symmetra ever has. They should just reclassify Symmetra as defense. She's just a more nuanced Torbjorn. Let Ana take over that support space for the sake of team balance flags when you're picking characters.

Nyquil Grandma can be super fun but also very infuriating like most snipers. I've logged in close to three hours with her already and I'm hopefully getting better with her. The new update coming to consoles should buff her a bit but we'll see how it works out in play. If you're a good sniper and a reluctant healer, she might be for you.

I don't have a way to play it right now, but I've seen an enormous amount of praise for it. Half the people I follow on Tumblr have been posting Overwatch stuff obsessively, and some old high school friends on FB have been talking about it a lot too. I've found the characters interesting, but it's not the type of game I generally find myself interested in so I'm not sure that I'd be into playing it even if I did have the right console. I'm not so much into multiplayer games, so I avoid games that don't include a single-player mode. Might be interesting to watch some Let's Plays or something, though!

Blizzard would be dropping the ball if they didn't team up with a studio to make an animated series about it, I think. The material is there and all the of the characters are really well-liked. It would make the perfect Saturday morning action show. Just like the old ones we all excitedly woke up to see. There's no real gore and it's all very lighthearted. I would definitely watch it.

There's not much story content in the game itself, though all the characters chat with each other before a match starts. They reveal a lot of telling information about their backgrounds and history with each other.

I'd like to see Blizzard incorporate a co-op mode at the very least -- there's a robot race called the Omnics at war with humanity, but it's never on screen. Fighting them together could be fun.

I'm actively trying to get better at all the characters I don't use that often, with unexpectedly awkward results. Sometimes pleasantly surprising ones. But mostly awkward growing pains. I really wish Winston's lightning gun did more DPS.

Characters I play most:

  1. Zarya (who I feel is the best offensive tank)
  2. Mercy (nobody likes to play support, so I often volunteer to babysit the team)
  3. D.Va (for when you need a tank to be highly mobile; her recent buffs help)
  4. Lucio (alternate healer for when I need to focus on mobility and BWAM-ing people off platforms)
  5. Symmetra (surprisingly and extraordinarily deadly on certain defense maps)
  6. Soldier 76 (for raw DPS since I usually get stuck THREE FUCKING GENJIS AND TWO WIDOWMAKERS)
  7. McCree (for more precise DPS on maps with a lot of blind corners)

Characters I'm trying to get better at:

  1. Hanzo / Widowmaker (I'm trying to improve my marksmanship, still not sure which character is more useful. Prolly Hanzo because of the super.)
  2. Ana (same issue with marksmanship, though she's really useful on maps where your team is spread out)
  3. Reinhardt (I use him sometimes, but envy players who turn him into a one man army)
  4. Genji (he's useful as a flanker, but that requires really good map knowledge to use him to maximum effect)
  5. Pharah (Adrienne is an amazing Pharah and I'm jealous -- but I'm getting better)
  6. Tracer (good Tracer players are annoying as fuck, but I've only had a few good runs with her)

Characters I'm meh:

  1. Torbjorn (I usually spend most of my time running around with the Swedish skin screaming "I'M SVEEEDISH"; he's potentially very dangerous but also kinda boring)
  2. Winston (He's useful on some maps, but I find his super underwhelming and his gun needs a damage buff for him to be really effective)
  3. Junkrat (I like him and have good runs when a def. character is needed, but I'm also not overly interested in "maining" him)
  4. Mei (fuckin' mei players are some of the most annoying people in Overwatch, but she can be useful at times)
  5. Reaper (good for flanking, but his play style isn't too interesting for me)

Character I will never fucking use because of the fucking principle of the thing:

  • MOTHER FUCKING BASTION
  • LESS THAN A MINUTE LOGGED AND STAYING THAT WAY

you forgot zenyatta, who does insane dps while still healing, and discord makes people regret living, his ult got buffed so he's now a racecar.

I will say once you get the ability to aim with ana, she is by far the best burst healer, I've been able to keep a tank alive through things like a reaper ult or a pharah ult, not to mention getting good with ana is just a small step away from getting good with widowmaker. she does work best in tandem with another healer, comp meta leans toward two anyway. Her ult is insane and builds at a more insane rate and is the best thing to happen to most of the roster, it  tends to be featured in many plays of the game.

honestly my focus is getting great with one person from each category except with tanks and offense which I am working on two. There's some pretty good streamers out there and many do have a class they are particularly good with and it's fun to watch and learn some of their tricks with classes.

Oh, yeah. .....Well, the fact that I forgot about him probably says a lot of how I view Zenyatta. He's alright. But I find him a little lacking compared to some of the others. Even with all his new buffs. Imo, having a good escape skill or a good "oh shit" skill is better than having recharging shields.

He's good for shutting down enemy supers, though, I suppose. Mostly good if your team is mostly competent and doesn't require constant babysitting. Then he can provide fire support from the back or sides.

My most played is Reinhardt. With the right support player, I can keep the team safe and put out enough damage to just decimate the enemy line. There was one time I played against an opposing Reinhardt and it was hilarious. We effectively canceled each other out. Whenever we saw the other, we'd charge like valiant bucks and take each other down. I'd usually finish him off before he could get me, post collision, but not always.

I've had my first PotG with Tracer the other day and I feel like it was something I was working towards for a long time now.

I'm happy to say my progress with McCree has also been good as well, as well as D.Va. Still want to be better with Ana but that's another story.

Unrelated note but does anyone who has this game for PS4 want to try for some competitive matches with me sometime in the near future? I want to get my rank up but the teams I get stuck with usually suck hard, regardless of my skill level in the situations I'm placed in.

^ Paragon was a free promo on PSN when I started. It's still in Alpha and has cross-play between PC and PS4.

But if they get some crossplay support, yeah, I'd totally buy it. I've heard nothing but good things about it's gameplay, and microtransaction stores will always have trouble.

Have you heard bad things about the microtransactions? Because they're wholly optional and just for people who are too lazy to level up. I've gotten every unlockable I've ever wanted strictly through gameplay. The "random" lootboxes are usually well-balanced between legendaries, rares, commons, and free in-game currency. Not every time, but over a longer stretch of time. By the time you're at level 50, you've likely acquired a decent stack of legendary skins and rare stuff.

At this point, I'm rolling lootboxes with each level-up purely for the sake of collecting. There are couple things I still might buy with credits. But those are only "nice to haves."

The seasonal stuff can only be acquired through actual gameplay, but that's how it should be.

It's more a principle that I despise booster pack game design.

After hearing Angry Joe and TotalBiscuit's opinions, I must conclude my ego knows no bounds. I have an opinion on how I would monetize a game which I have never played.

Yes I'm a little late but I play Overwatch, but I'm on PC rather than either of the consoles. Am I still able to play with you guys, or is cross-platform not a thing for this game?

If it works, my BattleNet tag is SLthePyro#1655. I almost exclusively play the Tanks, usually Reinhardt or Winston, and I'm learning D.Va.

No crossplay yet, but it's being considered by Blizzard. The cross will be between XB1 and PS4, though, provided that Sony and Microsoft will actually be open to it. PC players would have a pretty clear advantage over console players -- a mouse is usually faster and more accurate than a controller, especially if it's customized.

Clearly the console peasants players need to get on the PC players' level.   :P

In all seriousness though, it is a shame that they won't do cross play with PC. From what I've read, it's unlikely that Sony and Microsoft will allow much, if any, cross play between their platforms, despite everyone's hopes. I don't see why the Xbox version doesn't at least support cross play, with their new Play Anywhere initiative. If I recall correctly, games like Halo 5 will be available for cross play on PC and Xbox, while also supporting mouse and keyboard. Granted, I'm not an expert on any of the above subjects, or this game for that matter, so if I'm off about any of that, feel free to correct me.

Play Anywhere doesn't launch until September, and they're only starting with a handful of games to test it out. I'm sure more will be compatible later, but not all games will be included in the program if their content doesn't translate well across the divide. The programming for PC and XB1 versions have to be sympatico, because all your progress is synched across both platforms. That said, most games should work just fine.

Overwatch was finished and released before Play Anywhere was implemented, so the console and PC version might have some key differences in programming despite looking superficially the same. But it might be possible in the future. Blizzard's main worry was the differences in hardware. A good gaming mouse has greater range and speed of motion than even the best elite controllers. Although Blizzard could theoretically limit/handicap mouse input enough to where the difference is minor.

But I suppose a lot of developers are waiting to see how the PA versions of Halo and Gears 4 will go. They'll have crossplay co-op, and I think also crossplay pvp. Lessons learned there will no doubt be applied to future crossplay shooters.
