Hello?

....hello?

Hellllloooooooooooooooo!?

....screw it, I'm doing this anyway.

This is going to be a really interesting and/or weird year for E3. It's been noticeable for the past few, but this years seems to be the one where everyone collectively began to wonder if what was once "Gaming Christmas" even really matters anymore, in its current form. Companies are beginning to notice that if they have any genuinely big news they want to throw in front of the mainstream media, all they really have to do to get it is go up to USA Today or Entertainment Weekly or the New York Times and go "Hey, we're going to talk about our new console/initiative/game at this time and place," they'll at the very least tokenly send someone out to check it out. All this money they spend on booths and conferences and flying everyone out, and they can get just as much hype and coverage by holding their own event or manipulating the internet and its different facets and groups to do so, with the added bonus of having far more control over the messaging then they normally would. Just look at how well Nintendo's done with its Directs and Treehouse livestreaming, and how very quickly everyone else started to do their own in the following years. There's enough excitement and such at the press conferences themselves for now, but I have doubts on how much longer that'll last. Will they open up to the public? That might help, but stuff like PAX already fills that void very well, and their own attempt at that this year seems kinda weird.

Who knows. It's an interesting year, and we shall see. No predictions this time because.....they've sorta laid bare what their intentions are at this point, to be honest. Sony and Microsoft have their step up upgrades which I'm not too fond of, and Nintendo is doing its own insane thing like usual. I sorta wonder if the whole "IT'S ONLY ZELDA!" was a Nintendo Japan mandate, and NOA went "That's not going to go over well...." and the subsequent change to "IT'S ONLY MOSTLY ZELDA, ALSO POKEMON AND WHATEVER LITTLE WE HAVE FOR THE WIIU AND 3DS ALSO!!!!" was from them.EA I'm sure will ahve some interesting things since they are at their own event alongside the typical skull numbing sports, and Activiion'll be doing the CoD and Destiny thing.

As far as the schedule goes, I believe that it's:

Sunday, 06/12/16

EA @ 1:00 PM PST

Bethesda @ 7:00 PM PST

Monday, 06/13/16

Microsoft @ 9:00 AM PST

Ubisoft @ 2:30 PM PST

Sony @ 5:00 PM PST

Tuesday, 06/13/16

Nintendo @ 9:00 AM PST

Then the show starts proper with all the various Livestreaming, so who knows. I'll just sit and watch I suppose.

EA.....was dull, but not really disappointing because I don't know what else we could expect? Looks like EA still has to shake some of the kinks from this new event they have with all the lingering shots of the awkward crowds, but I guess the whole point is all about being there and playing. Kinda not a lot, any of the really interesting stuff is still super early and not coming out till at least late 2017, so....eh?

Titanfall 2 looks way more interesting with the single player campaign, and I wonder if the new additions to the movement and combat in multiplayer will help it keep an audience this time around unlike last time when it petered out after about a month. Now available for PS4 users, so that's cool. October 28th this year.

Not a whole lot for Mass Effect: Andromeda, and I'm doubting if that'll really be out by the end of the fiscal year in early 2017. At the very least, the stuff they showed was using in-game engine if not outright "gameplay," and it looks pretty, but it still doesn't tell us anything, so either they're pulling a Nintendo and Bethesda and intentionally holding it all close to their chest despite being further along, or it's not nearly as ready as they had hoped it'd be.

Sports are sports. I'm not sure if that socc - football coach knew that was meant to be a bit, but otherwise, whatever.

The "Hey, we're not evil, we're supporting these small developers!" was nice but was suspect, though Fe looks like it'll be neat.

There's a lot of studios working on Star Wars.....but much like ME, there's not much to say? New Battlefront is next year, and the two action games are super far away, though the early footage of the one looked neat enough.

Battlefield 1 on October 21st, and it at least looks visually amazing - Battlefront looked crazy, so I'll actually believe it being real.

....so, nothing really for me. Bethesda's later this evening, so I'm curious at what new stuff they'll have.

EDIT: Oh man, the post conference Battlefield 1 stream is making this all worth it. It's the most cringe worthy and amazing artificial talk between an interviewer who doesn't give a shit and a bunch of celebrities who have no idea what Battlefield is. Though the handful who do know and at least paid attention are worth giving some props to.

I will have to watch the ME thing. After the debacle that was ME3, you would think EA would be pulling all the stops trying to restore our faith in the franchise.

EDIT: Yeah, that trailer did nothing to help.

Whatever they show in the Summer needs to be a showstopper with how they're holding it off.

So, Bethesda......was solid. Nothing super surprising besides one thing, but it all either looked pretty good or was inoffensive and they went through briskly

New Quake! Quake Champions, and the main guy is definitely Quake Guy, and I'm sure a few of those characters are from Quake III. More to say at Quakecon, so that's that, I'll need to see gameplay.

That Elder Scrolls Hearthstone Card Game has a story mode, I guess.

More Fallout 4 DLC to justify that price change for the Season Pass. Mostly just workshop packs, and while I'm amused by how you can just put Fallout Shelter into the game, I'll mostly pass. The new story DLC seems like it'll take place in a theme park, so that could be cool. Speaking of Fallout Shelter, it's getting a PC version and an update with quests and mechanic upgrades in July, so that's that.

Skyrim for the PS4 and XB1 looks....significantly nicer and has more work then I thought put into it, and will support mods on console. I'm tempted, but unless they do something crazy like let me move my save from last gen over, I'll just pass.

Hey, it's a total reboot of Prey that looks nothing like either the first game or that awesome lookign Prey 2 from years ago. But whatever, it could be neat, just cinematics.

Funnily enough, the free updates to Doom are way more interesting then the paid DLC. Whatever, the game's awesome, but I don't care about the multiplayer in it.

Dark Brotherhood for Elder Scrolls On-line....cool I guess.....?

I have to note that that one lady in the crowd REALLY LOVES ESO, it seems.

Also, Blink-182 is playing for the crowd later tonight. Uh-huh.

Huh, a VR version of Fallout 4 for the HTC Vive in 2017. I guess that's neat, though it seems like the stuff on hand are just "VR Experiences" where you walk around.

Dishonored 2 looks pretty damn nice, and I kinda liked the first one, I hope this irons out the wrinkles and weirdness. The artstyle's really cool in how they aren't even bothering to look realistic, and I'm interested. I never finished the first one, so I'm kinda tempted to pre-order in order to get the current gen version for free. Comes out November 11th this year, so that's that.

So not a bad showing, but I'm getting the sense that this year will overall just be this - solid shows, but nothing to really get excited over. Hopefully I'm wrong, but who knows.

Tomorrow - Microsoft in the morning!

Microsoft's conference actually had a few good games and actual gameplay, some of it done right on the stage. It almost seemed to good to be true... which, of course, led to me digging to find the giant fucking * that they were trying to hide.

Only to find that they weren't really hiding it at all: almost every game they showed off was "XBox One and Windows 10 Exclusive".

If you didn't catch it, I'll put it bluntly:

Quote

Windows 10 Exclusive

They're seriously making PC users upgrade to their new software for the new games, even if their PC specs will run things just fine - which they clearly can, because the XBox One was repeatedly stated to be able to play all of these new games perfectly well even in the presence of its "XBox One S" successor. Once I realized this I could just hear Microsoft whispering "Goddamnit, upgrade to Windows 10 already! We know it's a glitchy piece of garbage, but we worked hard on it!" every time that exclusivity message popped up, and my optimism promptly decayed into spite.

Actually missed the Microsoft conference due to a prior commitment, but it was a solid enough presser. The Cross buy and Cross play stuff for games is interesting, and honestly was telegraphed for awhile now, so it's nothing to get annoyed by, really. Surprised that they outright said the Scorpio was coming next year, though they definitely danced around with all the buzz about it being super powerful and all that. Though honestly, that $300.00 X-Box One S is mighty tempting.....if not for that Scorpio next year. Anyway, Gears 4 looks neat enough, the storm looked good, but it is what it is. General Raam from the series will be in Killer Instinct.

I do have to note that it's pretty noteworthy that they had both a lady (Laura Bailey at that!) and a black guy presenting on stage in the first 15 minutes.

Forza Horizon 3 looks nice like usual, and the multiplayer drop in and out world synching seems like a cool feature, but whatever.

Recore also looks neat, still.

Final Fantasy XV had a terrible demo, I assume Sony will have a better or at least different one tonight.

Gwent stand alone. Sure.

Honestly, everything is the same - solid, but not really super surprising. Dead Rising 4 looks great ad it's back to being silly and goofy with Frank West, though I don't think it's exclusive? I assume Capcom wants to not do that again.

Anyway, Ubisoft was....uneven. A lot of cool stuff I will play, but it sorta kept starting and stopping. Aisha Tyler is totally on now that she's comfortable with the hosting role and it shows, she was on point and completely free to keep taking potshots at everyone and everything.

Hey, I guess Dance Central 2017 is technically the second announced NX game?

I'm kinda glad they acknowledged the tragedy over the weekend, and it is a nice touch that everyone's been wearing those pins the last couple days.

Ghost Recon looks like it could be super cool, but the fake chatter in that demo put me off, like usual. March 7th next year, could be great, and the open endedness of the missions could be great if it's delivered as promised.

The South Park segment dragged way too long. It was funny enough, but the sit dons and constant switching between chatting and showing footage kinda ruined it. Could be good, last one was. Dcember 6th, pre order it and get the last game for free.

Some Division DLC, fine.

Eagle Flight being a ports game was....weird and unexpected. I don't know.

Star Trek Bridge Crew is Bridge Commander with the Trek license, and it looks like it would be awesome fi it really works out. I like that the three Trek actors playing genuinely seemed impressed and enjoyed it, and while the chatter was fake, that's mostly because they, especially Levar Burton, already had that techno babble drilled into their heads from being on the show and it sorta just came out for them.

For Honor having a campaign mode makes me more interested, and it already looked cool anyway. Interesting that there's at least some semblance of story. Valentine's next year.

Grow Home sequel! Loved the first, though i worry that it could be too long since the first one being sort was part of the charm. Grow Up, in August.

Trials of the Blood Dragon. Sure, whatever, it looks like it could work. Out now apparently.

Some talk and footage of the Assassin's Creed movie, I still don't know. I'll watch it, but I'm not sure....

You know, Watch_Dogs 2 looks like it could be great, but the attitude seems all over the place. I don't know, I feel like the main character is actually too cool for all these jackass hackers and the game should treat all the hacking stuff as being utterly ridiculous. That asshole with the LED shades being played straight and presented as "This is totally cool! And Awesome!" just makes me want to join the other side. Also, the part where the lead character,in the midst of wacky hacking hi-jinx, straight up pulls out a gun and just murders the hell out of all those people is such an off putting and weird tonal shift. If you're willing to get in there and just waste fools, why even bother with all the stealth stuff and just outright go in guns blazing, or at least take care of everyone Hitman style? It would be better then the first game, but if Dedsec is presented as being the good guys an not a bunch of jackasses I don't think I can deal with it. That trailer is cool though, and it seems like San Francisco's more negative aspects are being played up as ridiculous and terrible in the right way, which makes the hackers being played straight all the more jarring.

November 15th though.

A new Open World Extreme Sports game, called Steep. Eh, fine, could be cool.

That last bit with Yves Guillemot talking about everyone being a family and being around for 30 years is oddly poignant and depressing knowing what's going on business-wise in France, and seems like a not-so-subtle plea to everyone to not let Vivendi hostile takeover the company, as they just did to his brother's game company.

So, not bad, but just too long and with too much padding, a 90 minute presser with better pacing would've worked better.

Now....Sony.

Sony....was weird. It wasn't bad, and there was lots of amazing stuff, but I came out feeling....weird. Not worse then Microsoft, but....weird.

Anyway, the live orchestra was neat, though them playing a brand new song we have no familiarity with was an odd choice.

New God of War actually looks really interesting. It looks really different from the other games, with bearded Kratos and kid sidekick, feeling like it has a bit of Dark Souls and new Tomb Raider in it. Impressed they really did go and freshen up the series and are changing it up instead of just doing cookie cutters like Ascension an the portable games, so they get credit for that.

Post Apocalyptic Biker game, Days Gone. Was interested in the trailer.....until they did the game play demo, and it was just more zombies, then it plummeted. I don't know, it looks okay, but....eh.

Last Guardian has a date, October 25th, still looks depressing but good.

Horizon: Zero Dawn continues to look AMAZING. Holy crap, I want this game so badly, it looks so good and cool, I'm looking forward to it. Very involved fight with that creature.

Detroit, from quantic Dream sure looks like a David Cage game. Skeptical, especially after Beyond Two Soul, but worth keeping an eye on. Maybe.

Resident Evil VII looks intriguing, and once again, kudos for taking the game and doing something somewhat fresh with it....again. Looks more hopeful then the series has since RE4, and it comes out January. I wonder if it's a substantial game, or just a "VR Experience" like a lot of the next few games. Farpoint looks interesting, but the Star Wars, Batman Arkham, and Final Fantasy XV ones don't look like anything more then glorified demos.

Speaking of which, I was wrong about FFXV - different trailer, but doesn't show any better. Figures.

The Call of Duty Infinite Warfare bit was interesting at the beginning with the map and stuff on the ship, but afterwards it was just more typical CoD, except IN SPAAAAAAAACE.

Crash Bandicoot.....just the first three games Remastered, and he's in Skylanders. Honestly? Probably the best you could expect.

Lego Star Wars The Force Awakens, demo out, looks okay, typical Lego game.

Oh, God, this is Hideo Kojima when he's completely unleashed isn't it? He gets a Wrestlemania Entrance, and releases a completely undecipherable trailer starring Norman Reedus, who I guess made buddies with him during the failed Silent Hills. Death Stranding sure is a name.

And...Spider-man by Insomniac? Is it exclusive when Sony made the deal with Marvel? Who knows, I guess it looks interesting if it's not tethered with a movie.

And the disappointing Days Gone demo.

Eh. Weird, like I said. A lot of great stuff, but...huh.

Well, tomorrow's Nintendo's crazy Pokemon and Zelda stream, I guess, as well as E3 proper, so...we shall see.

Link Between Worlds gave me hope and reminded me what a good series Zelda can be.  I had some good times playing Tri Force Heroes with friends at work.  But I was still skeptical until today.  Skyward Sword left a scar.

This looks like both a giant step forward in someways and a much needed step backwards in others.  Much hype was born today.

I might be alone in this sentiment, and it could just be a symptom of a lack of footage available/developed, but the new Zelda game just felt lonely. Aside from a disembodied voice in the trailer, there were no other characters than Link. (EDIT: I see now that there was an "Old Man" in some gameplay, but that's all. The point still stands.)

I guess that's to be assumed with a subtitle like "Breath of the Wild" - I mean, I wouldn't expect much civilization in the "Wild", but that's an aspect I very much enjoyed with Zelda: the interaction with other characters. It's definitely a big component of why Majora's Mask is my favorite of the series, too. I just worry that "Breath of the Wild" indicates just that - very much a lack of civilization, ala Shadow of the Colossus.

Credit where credit is due, though; that trailer was aces, Nintendo.

The loneliness is by design. Nintendo intentionally removed all towns and NPCs so the demo could just focus on exploration and gameplay.

That said, I'm very excited by what I see. The Amiibo functionality seems cool too, since you can get Wolf Link as your companion that way (and apparently others as well), though that sucks for those who haven't bought into them.

I, for one, love the loneliness. I don't need some chatty NPC complaining about their problems and telling me where to go and what to do.

They did also say that the demo was very much contained to just the Great Plateau, and while the map isn't huge, it's a great deal larger then previous land locked Zelda games by a great margin, I imagine there'll be a Kakariko Village or Hyrule Castle Town somewhere where the typical wacky NPC's will be hanging around - if nothing else, the modern Zelda games seem to have a running trope of there being a place for Link to have as "home," and that doesn't seem to be something they necessarily want to leave out. Having a home to come back to after a long trek across the wild dealing with all the new systems seems like a thing Nintendo would do.

Haven't had time to watch all 5 hours of Nintendo's stream, but they're definitely on the right path. If they nail dungeon design (which, admit it, was something Skyward Sword actually did pretty well most of the time) and just do a halfway decent story with those missing characters, this could be great. It's already the most hopeful a Zelda game has looked in awhile, and I haven't even had a bad time with the last few if I'm being honest.

No, I agree, it looked incredibly lonely. XD

As odd as it may be, I do enjoy the NPCs and other character interactions, however minor, in a Zelda game. This one may be lacking it (and of course not a bad thing to do), but still less appealing in that sense (to me).

This Zelda will not be like any others that have come before it. In some ways, I feel that they are trying to revive the same world feel of the first game from the 80's and bring it into the 21st century. All mysteries and exploration. Though this idea of being on your own in the midst of savage wilderness has me torn, because if it's done properly (see SotC) it will be a triumph of minimalism in games. But this game is anything but minimal, it's possibly the most expansive world we've ever seen in the series. Let's see if Nintendo can keep up the balancing act when this game comes out.

As for the other gems of the show (at least, what I enjoyed seeing) was the bits for Final Fantasy XV and the Last Guardian. I'll be going over to GameStop to reserve a copy of the game some time tomorrow, been waiting for that game for years. Also, NieR 2 looks interesting too, Yoko Taro's games have always stood against the cliche and conventional troupes in games and his sadistic productions tend to make their own marks (excluding Drakengard 3 from a few years back, which could have been great but the lack of care in development is blatantly obvious) though the delay to next year is a tad disappointing.

To be fair, Dark Souls is heavily inspired by the Zelda series and it handles solitude amazingly well. Words don't really describe the feeling of watching another of the NPCs around Firelink hollowing. I don't think Nintendo will go anywhere near dark, but a one-off experiment where the game is mostly uncluttered wilderness can definitely work.

Wait, there was a NieR 2 announced? Wow I really did miss out on a lot of the announcements. XD... Thanks for the heads up!

Yeah... I got that vibe (and they confirmed such) about going way back to Zelda 1 in style. I wonder where they will go from there, as I assume there will be fans who like the other 3D games, and then those that like the new conventions. It will be hard to appeal to them all, right?

I missed most of e3, but what I did see was pretty underwhelming. I'm with everyone on the Zelda hype train, though. I haven't been legitimately excited about a Zelda game for like 10 years. I'm glad to see that this looks way more open and liberating -- I really enjoyed that about the classic games. That's part of the reason I started playing Elder Scrolls instead. Better captured that sensation than many of the more strictly-dungeon-crawly titles. I'm not overly worried about the lack of civilization. You can still craft a good story with minimal NPCs. Although I would be surprised if there wasn't a couple decent settlements on a map that size. So there's probably nothing to worry about.

Unfortunately, Nintendo hasn't caught my eye with their other games (except maybe Star Fox), so I'm likely going to end up missing it. Can't justify splurging on a console for just one game. A genuine shame. I know there are a lot of hardcore Nintendo fanboys here, but I'm secretly hoping their console division goes tits up so their games can be ported to other systems. I'm just... tired with Nintendo. That feels like the only applicable word.

Mass Effect Andromeda trailer was a let down. Didn't even feel like a proper trailer -- and minimal gameplay footage. Either they are really trying to keep the story a secret, or another delay may be imminent. I'm really hoping beyond hope that Andromeda will be good, but there's a lot of bad signs floating around that it'll be like ME3 meets Destiny rather than a truly immersive single-player RPG epic.

The new Deus Ex just looks kind of meh for now. Big fan of the first one, thought Human Revolution was solid, but the promo footage was sadly lacking in storytelling and plot details. Just pew pew pew ROBOT POWERS.

Battlefield 1 looks interesting purely because of history reasons, but it's not really my kind of game. I'm mostly interested in the air combat. I used to play the shit out of the old Red Baron flight simulators. Given the massive disappointment that the new Battlefront, though, I'm sure everyone's anxious about the actual content of the game -- not just its looks. I'm glad they didn't opt for another boring WWII or "future combat" game.

Otherwise, everything just.... felt like your typical off-season where they're just teasing games that won't be out for a long time.

I very much like that Xbone players will get free Windows 10 versions of their games. Wonder if it'll apply retroactively (like what they're doing with 360 backwards compatibility) or only to upcoming games. Either way, it makes sense and benefits me, so yay.
