I was watching TV about Christmas traditions, and they're going to ban A Charlie Brown Christmas because it talks about Jesus. for one, I watch that movie every year, and I loved it.

also, certain Christmas carols are going to be forbidden because they talk about being blessed, baby Jesus, etc.

one county in Florida is even banning Christmas decorations in public places (irrelevant, but on the topic of banning things).

this is ridiculous! you can't ban Jesus from the Christmas season... that's what it's all about and originated from. I mean, his name is even in the holiday-- Christmas. to me, that's like saying "okay, here in Waffle House, it's illegal to say 'waffle.'"

it's nice to say "happy holidays" to include those people who celebrate other things, but when we remove the core and most important aspect of Christmas, what is left? arunma's nightmare-- a season all about Santa.

Hah. Well stated...
I can't believe they're not showing Charlie Brown! That's heresy! Some people take things too far -_-

They're not "banning" anything. That's against a number of laws. Those same laws don't allow Christmas decorations on Public Property, so live with it, this is a democracy. As for Charlie Brown, they're not showing it because something that mentions Jesus will get small amounts of heat from "Don't Jesus-up my TV" and "Don't TV-up my Jesus." They can't show something that bothers people, because it's a sin before their god- The Dollar.

Alak-- they did ban the Charlie Brown movie from schools and television. It was always something we watched every year at school, but the board said that the mention of Jesus offended people, and we can't watch it. if Jesus offends you, I don't think you'll be comfortable living in America. you don't need to ruin it for everyone else.

They CAN'T ban it from television. Thet's ILLEGAL. It was CANCELLED. The government wasn't involved. And no, they can't show religious material in schools, because of the SAME LAW that makes them allow it on television!

well.

I'm not sure of the technical definition of "ban," but I see it as "they won't show it to us anymore."

But it sounds like a school decision. You will probably still see it on CBS every year.

Bah, I've seen that movie on at least two stations so far. I think it'd be too difficult to outright 'ban' a movie like that which so many people are used to watching during the holidays. Schools are just like that, so it's probably best you watch it at home anyway. As for banning Christmas decorations and carols that feature Jesus and other such religious things... meh, I would hope people would instead stop hindering/banning religion and in turn accept all of them. Pushing it aside and trying to make us forget about it.... bah. I'm all for separation of church and state, so kids won't be forced to conduct practices that aren't a part of their own religion or cause pointless arguments, but I really would wish they'd teach about religions more, without bias, and not really be afraid to talk about them.

Well, this at least is coming from a girl who's school is too crappy small to even offer a religion class, so maybe they do in the bigger schools.

Banning A Charlie Brown Christmas would crush me... It's a tradition up there with the old school animated "The Grinch Stole Christmas", ya know? We never watched it in school, but I went to a public school so that may have been why.

But yes... HE is the reason for the season. (Speaking of Christ of course... not Charlie Brown).

That's impossible. There are too many religions too cover.

well.

The school can't endorse a religion.

It doesn't take that much effort to talk about the major ones. ;)

And my school still shows us Christmasy movies during the holidays. Hmm. Not that anyone in my school cares, of course.

Not really. Satanism, for example, might create some problems. And there are a lot of major ones, too, not to mention all the sects. It's just not possible.

Then once the teacher hits on the history of a religion someone in the class practices there is a lot of potential for trouble. Not just legally. The student could continually point out the teacher is wrong and constantly disrupt class.

Trying to take Christ out of Christmas is like trying to take the chocolate out of a chocolate cake. It can't be done without changing the meaning of it altogether.

How can you ban Christian things from Christmas?

That is impossible, and I think this thread was blown out of proportion.

I haven't seen the Charlie Brown Christmas movie banned. It was on just the other day. And if they banned that, they'd have to ban "It's a Wonderful Life" (best Christmas themed movie of all time). I mean, the plot of that movie is God, Joseph and an angel (second class) named Clarence trying to stop George Bailey from killing himself.

I don't see how the mention of Jesus can offend people. Mentionning Jesus can't be offensive.

"Hey, you know who Christians pray to?"

"No, who?"

"Jesus!"

"You sick bastard. How can you say that around my children?"

What the hell is wrong with people? Does his name sicken people for some reason? I am an athiest and strongly against Christian extremists and even I am not offended by the mention of Jesus, nor am I offended about in depth anything revolving around his life and/or character.

Pisses me off...

Damn people...and their entoxicating levels of stupid...

This was just one school that decided not to show Charlie Brown anymore. This wasn't some FCC ban from t.v. And I can't think of anyone who is actively trying to take Jesus and Christianity out of Christmas.

And we have gone over this what seems like a hundred times. Atheism is NOT a religion.

It's not that people are offended. They can't have religious material in schools, because it lends itself to brainwashing. Government installations can't prostelytize. Pro ejemplo: Schools teach that Columbus discovered America. Now, the Vikings got here first, and I don't think it's even possible to discover something that already has an indigenous population, but that's what the schools teach. It's completly false, but who cares? They teach that the earth wobbles in it's rotation around the sun to cause seasons, which is of course untrue. They teach subtly that nothing goes wrong outside of TV, and, wouldn't you know it, 83% of Americans can't find Afghanistan on a map. Now, do you really want the same people who convinced three generations that football is academic allowed to bring religion into it?

Well thats funny because I just went to target yesterday and there was a nativity scene--and it had music having to do with Jesus too!

Leave it to OVERLY ZELOUS Christians to over-react. I've seen Nativity scenes at hte mall too. *rolls eyes* So they believe in Jesus and believe he was born and you celebrate that with nativity scenes. What, do they want a cookie?
