Anyone else playing this one?  I'm about 10 hours in and I'm digging it so far.

I love the Paper Mario crossover aspects, although the different timing for enemy attacks between the paper and sprite versions never fails to throw me off.  I've seen complaints about the minimalist story, but those complaints are stupid.  It's great to have one of these games with a focus on gameplay again, especially after the disappointment of Dream Team.  Seriously, there's no reason Dream Team should have higher review scores than Paper Jam.

Also, every boss is a bastard.

I was waiting or a few more people and sites chimed in on how it was, but so far everyone does seem to say it's much better then the last one. Honestly, while Dream Team was disappointing, I probably wouldn't have been so down on it if it didn't feel so darn long. Maybe it really wasn't, but compared to Bowser's Inside Story and the first two it felt like it dragged way too much, which is a shame since the humor was still okay. Does this one seem like it might be ovely long too, or does it at least keep the pace up so far?

So far, it hasn't felt like it was dragging.

With Dream Team, I thought it felt drawn out for a few reasons:

1. Constant tutorials, often accompanied by really stretched out dialog.  I loved the Beef Bros, but even they weren't enough to make the dialog tolerable.  Five pounds of flank steak is no substitute for a Porterhouse.

2. The Dream World.  Without any of the Dream World segments, Dream Team would have had a nice length.  Instead, we had an extra dungeon tacked on to the end of each world.  I'm particularly harsh on the Dream World because I was always a little sad about the wasted potential.  I wanted it to be more tied to the quirks of Luigi's psyche, but instead it was an uninspired, mildly surreal wavy landscape with a few giant mustaches in the background.  Worse, the tutorials told you how to solve every obstacle in the game without ever giving you a chance to try to figure anything out for yourself.  It made the actual gameplay feel like a waste of time.

Both those problems are gone.  The forced tutorials are much quicker and rarer.  Areas end when they should.  So if you had similar complaints, then Paper Jam is likely to work better for you as well.

That's pretty much exactly what got me turned off after Dream Team. Glad to hear it's back to form and I'm definitely going to dive in sooner rather then later.

Ok, I finished it.  This was definitely one of the better entries in the series.  Bowser's Inside Story remains my favorite due to Fawful and playable Bowser, but this one may be second.  It's been a long time since I played Superstar Saga.

Two notes on the main criticisms I have seen:

1.  The story.  The story is bare-bones in this game, that's true.  Which means the story doesn't constantly interrupt the game, so that's a plus.

2.  The Toad Hunt challenges.  There really aren't that many of them and most are kind of fun.  I got annoyed by them once or twice, but they aren't this horrible scourge they keep being made out to be.

On the more important front, the combat is probably best in the series.  They made one controversial change: the target reticule. Many enemy attacks declare in no uncertain terms which bro they are aiming at.  At first I was annoyed.  After all, a big part of these games is learning enemy tells so you know who to dodge/counter with.  However, they made up for it by giving enemies multiple attacks beyond one each for jump and hammer dodge.  It's not just a question of which Bro is the target, but which attack is coming.  So the combat didn't lose any depth after all.  The battle card system is much more balanced than the badges in Dream Team.  I didn't touch the amiibo stuff because reviews said it made the combat too easy and that's not one of my interests.  Some of the bosses were really, really tough and I was left wondering how in the hell I was supposed to dodge that.  The Bros/Trio attacks remain as fun as ever.  Mario & Luigi is my favorite flavor of turn-based RPG combat, so I was really happy to see it stay strong.  That's what this series is built on, after all.
