...Sigh.

Every year is disappointment. We know this. We shouldn't get hype over it, yet we still do, and we will continue to for each passing year. Do we really have nothing better to look forward to?

...Okay, depressing introduction over with, let's get started.

E3 2015 begins one week from now at the Los Angeles Convention Centre! There was plenty of intrigue from last year, but nothing that spectacular, so this the chance for our favourite(?) gaming companies to get the ships they made at E3 2014 sailing. This year it's three days of televised press conferences, followed by three days of public exhibits for those (if any) of us fortunate enough to be at the event in person.

Press Conference Times:

Sunday, June 14th, 2015:

  • Bethesda - 7:00pm Pacific Time / 10:00pm Eastern Time

Monday, June 15th, 2015:

  • Microsoft - 9:30am Pacific Time / 12:30pm Eastern Time
  • Electronic Arts (EA) - 1:00pm Pacific Time / 4:00pm Eastern Time
  • Ubisoft - 2:45pm Pacific Time / 5:45pm Eastern Time
  • Sony - 6:00pm Pacific Time / 9:00pm Eastern Time

Tuesday, June 16th, 2015:

  • Nintendo - 9:00am Pacific Time / 12:00pm Eastern Time
  • Square Enix - 10:00am Pacific Time / 1:00pm Eastern Time
  • PC Gaming Show - 5:00pm Pacific Time / 8:00pm Eastern Time

Exhibit Hours:

  • Tuesday, June 16, 2015: 12:00PM - 6:00PM
  • Wednesday, June 17, 2015: 10:00AM - 6:00PM
  • Thursday, June 18, 2015: 10:00AM - 5:00PM

Meeting Room Hours:

  • Tuesday, June 16, 2015: 12:00PM - 6:00PM
  • Wednesday, June 17, 2015: 9:00AM - 6:00PM
  • Thursday, June 18, 2015: 9:00AM - 5:00PM

The long list of exhibitors can be found here. (Indie developer WayForward said they had plans for E3, but they don't show up on this list...)
Things you can expect to see are listed here.
Things you definitely won't see are listed here.

I was going to do this after work yesterday, and while I was tempted to "accidentally" delete this thread or merge it with a new one made by me, I'll be nice.

You know, while there can be a lot said about the importance (or further lack thereof....) of E3, and a lot of cynical swipes at AAA game development in general especially after the Fall we just had, if you really step back and look at Gaming in general, honestly, you can argue it's better then it's ever been. Indie games have really, really come into its own in the last couple years, as development tools and engines got more affordable and available, and now people who would've had to contend with publishers sticking their fingers into their pot or flat out being unable to bring their ideas to reality are relatively easily able to develop and create their own games with small teams, like the four people making No Man's Sky or the one guy who made Axiom Verge. It's a nice counterpoint to the insane, bloated budgets of games like Destiny's half a billion dollars or games that sell 3 - 4 million copies being deemed failures because all these other games under performed, so now all of them get black listed. There's a lot of good stuff out there, more then ever, objectively, and even amongst the disasters of buggy Ubisoft games, an unfortunately timed Cops vs Robbers + Collateral Damage, and a disappointing MMO that try to pretend its not because you shoot a gun, stuff like Shadow of Mordor or Witcher Wild Hunt are amazing, even if not perfect. Hell, both the latter and Dragon Age Inquisition, as janky as they can be movement-wise, have clearly resonated with the people looking forward to them and are a pair of good, solid games even with the obvious flaws.

I think the real question as I alluded is whether or not E3 matters all that much anymore. It's still a great time of the year with announcements and reveals and all, but more and more with not just social media but just how easy it is for companies' PR teams and the actual executives and development team themselves to reach out to the audience, This, lest people forget, is a trade show, for businesses like Gamestop or Best Buy and Target to come see new stuff and make their decisions on what to buy for the coming year, it sort of just evolved into a weird mutant version of itself where the news that comes out is aimed more and more at the consumers instead of purchasers, while still being a private show that oddly enough has gotten tougher and tougher to sneak into unless you're a celebrity and/or his/her kid. Scaling down was obviously not the right decision as how the Santa Monica one a few years back went completely poorly, but I don't know if opening it to the public on just one day a la TGS would do any good either, since Cons like PAX and whatnot are much, much better places to interact with upcoming games. For all the shit people give them, I kinda think Nintendo, objectively, has the right idea with the Digital Event and I'm stunned that, one, they of all companies came up with the idea, and two, no one else has copied them. It's an event where they can get the info and footage and all that out that they want, and they can control it to preserve their message and the expectation they want it to have. The one and only negative to it is the lack of a live reaction to news, but obviously they think it's the right way for them to go. Money clearly isn't the biggest factor because for the last two years they've still gone and rented out the Nokia theater for the SSB Invitational and the Nintendo World Championships this year, and they sorta get the best of being live since by all indications that Smash Event was just filled to the brim with rabid fans who actually know who people like Sakurai and Reggie and all the execs actually are and genuinely scream happily for them. I highly suspect that they'll take advantage of the atmosphere and reveal something there.

There's also the unfortunate side effect of the greater audience being ignorant of the fact that all of these early demos and reveal trailers are just that.....early. Some of the blame definitely lies in the publishers for maybe not stating it out loud like they should, but as a general rule anything shown early is very much subject to change for the sake of the game itself running properly or being fun and sacrifices end up having to be made for the game itself to be better. All the belly aching about "DEVELOPER AND JOURNALISM COLLUSION!!!!" regarding graphics "downgrades" isn't that so much as most game journalists and writers don't think about the little disclaimer because of course that's a game in development, it's a given things will change. To their credit, a few places like Giant Bomb are getting a lot better about realizing that their readers don't have the same frame of reference they do and do point out that anything can change in early versions of games, and while most people SHOULD probably realize that when showing stuff off, it's hardly the conspiracy and den of lies the internet makes it out to be.

Anyway, regardless of relevance, E3 is next week, and because I'm sick today and am getting antsy lying in bed while still being too weak to do an awful lot beyond laying in bed or sitting in a chair, I'll dot he thing I used to do but haven't because I got too busy and just....drone on awhile for what we might expect from everyone, from the perspective of a guy who likes games but isn't even remotely informed enough to be a Games writer. So eh, I guess we can do this by conference order.

And note, I've been specifically ignoring all the "leaked" news because dammit I want to be surprised, so a lot of my predictions will inevitably already be proven or disproven by now. Whatever.

Bethesda

First time ever press conference, and obviously, we all know about Fallout 4 now. I suspect we'll also get to at least hear about if not see Dishonored 2 or whatever game Arkane is making, and of course Doom will pop up. Their new MOBA will be round and hopefully won't take up too much time, but eh, who knows. There's room for a surprise here or there, though there's definitely two thoughts that come form them revealing Fallout so early. Either "Wait, if they're showing THIS off, what are they hiding!?" or "Let's get this out of the way so we can look at the actual demo without the excitement blinding everyone." I have got to give them credit in regards to that trailer though, no BS super powerful computer graphics, they're showing off something believable and acceptable so that the final game won't have a bunch of morons crying foul on the devs "lying" as stated above, or hey, it looks better then the early demos, awesome! We shall see.

Microsoft

Early the next day, it's an interesting time for Microsoft. They've managed to outsell the PS4 for a couple months here and there thanks to the price cut, but they're still trailing overall, and while they've started to come swinging the perception is still that they're sorta just rummaging around and plodding along. Halo 5 will almost certainly get the spotlight and given past trends they'll showcase Black Ops III here, and other then the probably inevitable confirmation of the Gears of War up-res, I don't know what else will pop up. It's still hard to read what the stance is on Indies because while ID@XBox is around, they still kinda seem half-hearted is taking the plunge beyond a few deals here and there to keep up appearances. Assassin's Creed Syndicate might show up here since Unity was last time, but maybe Sony was able to go back and renew their old deal that usually showcased it at their conference. They'll confirm the new controller and the new 1 TB harddrive, but otherwise, it's up to them. Whether they fall on their face (which I doubt they will) or do well is all up tot hem, there are no outside forces or monkeys on their back to detract this year. Hopefully we get actual Rise of the Tomb Raider footage and some other suprises, maybe real gameplay of stuff like Scalebound and the other trailer only reveals last year.

EA

...does it even stand for "Electronic Arts" anymore? Anyway, it's going to be Star Wars Battlefield Battlefront taking the place of BF4 and Hardline and unless they can prove otherwise will probably be exactly the same as those two. Battlefront was fun, yeah, but I don't know, it was never that great to me, and all the exciting stuff from the cancelled BF3 looks like it has nothing to dow ith this version, even if it looks pretty. I hope they don't pull the "Oh God, we have nothing to show, quick, get some concept art of Mass Effect and Mirror's Edge up there!" again, because EA's shows as a whole are the worst showings at E3 even if you like the games being presented. I'm fine with it being too early for release dates for said ME and new Bioware IP, but they either have to have something tangible to show or just don't bother.

Oh, and for my own amusement, a prediction of how the overly long EA Sports presentation will go:

"Hey guys, look at how awesome Madden/NBA Live/FIFA/PGA Tour looks this year! Last year's game was a piece of crap, only SUCKERS bought that version, this year has -insert jargon here- added that makes it better then ever! This is the greatest version of -sport-ball ever, until next year when we bury this version too to hype up that one! Woooo! Random Athlete reading the prompter talking about how it's just like playing the real sport in real life before taking a bag of money and walking away!"

....though presumably they won't talk abotu FIFA too much. -cough-

Maybe they'll surprise us, but my expectations are low. Most I'll look forward to is more Inquisition DLC, though that may end up at Microsoft due to the timed deal.

Ubisoft

Oh you wacky French developers with a Bond villain CEO that have 2,000 people working on games in the half hour long boring credit sequences. They went from having arguably the best conference of everyone a few years ago to everyone immediately being suspicious about what they're being shown, and it's kinda their own fault. I mean, I'm pretty sure they're not intentionally tricking anyone out there, but their communication hasn't been great, and they have got to stop with the "Open World Game where you climb towers to unlock the map with icons all over the place" template. Even The Crew, the DRIVING game, has stuff you drive to and "climb" to reach satellite dishes to unlock the map, it's just ludicrous at this point. For their part the AC Syndicate team seems to be genuinely disappointed in themselves for how they misfired with Unity and noted where things went a completely different direction from what they intended. I thought the Companion App for Black Flag was neat since you could do your naval trade routes off the consoles and it was handy to build money or unlock things. They just went too far with the Unity app and locked too many damn things, so much so they backed off completely. Also, the snarky, winky joke about in-game currency doesn't work when the game itself HAS in-game currency you buy with real money. Anyway, I wonder if we can expect some wacky Far Cry 4 DLC a la Blood Dragon, since that was probably the one good fun game from them last year, and I'd like to see more. The Division and Rainbow Six will probably appear, though I doubt Division will be out this year since that lot is already for R6, unless they swap them around. Ignoring what weird fantasy land Ubisoft lives in where people who play Co-Op actually role play in communication instead of yelling about the giant bug lying in the room or their mom and dad hasslin' them, I still really don't know how good The Division really will be. If it all depends on everyone working together that'll probably end poorly since everyone wants to be the hero, and I don't know if the game will be interesting enough on its own. There'll probably be a Just Dance Dance Party because those still make tons of money, and Beyond Good & Evil 2 will forever be a tease that I will never get. Alas.

Sony

Sorta like last year, the ball is in Sony's court, though unless they've got some new surprises I don't see what they have coming. The Order ending up being so disappointing and bland beyond the stunning graphics and interesting setting probably hurt them a little even with Bloodbourne being well received, and I don't know if just more of Uncharted 4 will do it this year. We'll get the 1 TB model, of course, and it's hard to say whether Metal Gear will be here or Microsoft since it's done both shows in the past. I mean, really, unless they've got tons of new stuff all they'll have are more HD re-reses. Hopefully we'll get another solid Indie showcase and I for one would love to see more of stuff like Abzu and of course No Man's Sky, but out of everyone I don't know what to expect. Hopefully they don't do anything desperate or do another painfully dull TV segment. I'm stumped, to be honest, I just hope for the best.

Though a PS4 version of Vib Ribbon would be nice.

Nintendo

Ah, you guys. Honestly, I expect the same from last year - a lot of really relaxing chats with the lead developers and programmer over footage of new games with more in-depth demos at the Treehouse Live stuff during the show proper. I imagine Star Fox will be the big centerpiece since they've said Zelda won't be around, and while I won't set myself up for anything, new games for F-Zero or other franchises would be appreciated. I suspect we'll get more Smash DLC announcements, which I welcome, and crossing my fingers for more Mario Kart 8 tracks. Probably some new Amiibo announced, of course, which will cause more people heart ache, though the increased production that started in April SHOULD theoretically start to kick in in a month or so. Really, Nintendo is weird since they do exactly what you epxect them to do, while doing something from out of left field that pleasantly surprises you at the same time. I expect another surprise in the evening like the past few years have shown. Nothing on the NX, they've said it already, but I'm sure people will still complain about it.

Square-Enix

First ever publicly shown conference, and good on SE for realizing they were completely tone deaf for scheduling at the same time as NIntendo, a time slot that Nintendo has ALWAYS held for years, and pushing back an hour. Hopefully they show something since from all accounts their private conferences don't talk about much, and I'm afraid they'll treat this exactly the same. Final Fantasy XV should pop up, and maybe more footage of Kingdom Hearts III, despite my not being all that pleased by that series. I don't know what they'll do, they have plenty to show, especially with their Eidos properties, but it's question of whether or not stuff like Deus Ex will be here or at one of the consoles. There is another Hitman being made, and we are getting a handful of RPG's over here on the 3DS and Vita, but I'm not sure what to expect.

Here's hoping for the end to be the Final Fantasy VII remake........in 2D, on the 3DS, just to tick everyone off.

........though, I'd actually totally dig that.

There's also a PC Gaming specific conference in here, but I don't know what to expect. Valve does its own thing and Blizzard had Blizzcon, so other then the new X-Com I don't know what'll be there. e# has always been very console focused, so this could either be a waste of time or something cool.

So, that's that. Like always I'll take notes and ramble on about everything for each conference because, heck, I always find it fun to do that even if no one cares, and this is like the one time of year we manage to get some sort of discussion going on around here.

That said......what are all of ya'lls predictions, hopes, and dreams? Certainly we need to temper our expectations and be smart, but there's nothing wrong with being excited, at least a little, it's a cool time.

I give up on making predictions about how exciting E3 will (or won't) be.

The first year of a new console's life is usually the dullest. The PS4 and XBone have been out for a while now, so we should hopefully be moving into the "better quality second wave" titles. Hopefully. I haven't heard of any big news, so if they've been hiding something, they've been doing a good job of it.

I would expect/hope to see:

  • Fallout 4 gameplay footage
  • Maybe a tease about Elder Scrolls VI, if only a location reveal, but that's doubtful
  • In-depth look at Halo 5 (yawn)
  • Maybe something about a new wave of Destiny expansions
  • Gameplay footage of Rise of the Tomb Raider
  • Another tease of Mass Effect 4
  • I doubt they'd show Mad Max footage at this stage, since they've released so many trailers online, but you never know
  • Star Wars Battlefront, again
  • A new Deus Ex would be needed to keep Square-Enix feeling alive
  • Because Final Fantasy: Road Trip alone won't be all that exciting
  • Starfox footage
  • ?? I really don't know what to expect from Nintendo anymore

I won't have the time to watch the press conferences this year, but I do have a few things that I intend to keep an eye out for:

  • Sony will probably make an announcement or two to keep the PS4 in price and service parity with the X1.
  • No Man's Sky needs to explain to me what it's gameplay will actually be like--specifically the multiplayer--before I'm sold. This could be awesome. It could also get boring after an hour.
  • Square Enix is going to release a SECOND demo for FF XV. That's right; FF XV will have had TWO demos before launch. And let's not forget the Active Time Report, which is basically Tabita crying into the camera "I'll fix this, I'll fix, that, PLEASE LIKE THIS GAME!!!" The amount of pressure on the XV team must be absolutely unreal, and it will probably be the biggest single-game presence at E3. As much as I want to find out what's going on with Dragon Quest and any of a dozen of S-E holdings, I'm not holding my breath. Tomb Raider will probably be there, along with a mandatory "surprise announcement" which is practically the norm for E3 conferences, but other than that...I'm not expecting any miracles from S-E's presentation.
  • I will definitely keep an eye peeled for X-Com 2. Firaxis has some issues with difficulty curves, but they make good games. Here's hoping we have recruitable aliens.

Well, one of Nintendo's E3 trailers was already leaked, then quickly mirrored before it was taken down from YouTube. Proof that people simply can't wait a few fucking days.

Click here if you want to be spoiled. (And please refrain from mentioning it in the topic for those of us who don't want to be spoiled, please and thank you.)

Watching the Nintendo World Championships. Didn't think I had to say anything, but they announced a"new" game at the top: Earthbound Beginnings, aka Mother, for the Wii U Virtual Console. First time in English for North America and Europe.

And it's out....right now.

That....was unexpected, and also even more of a trolling for Mother 3.

I'll keep watching and I guess I'll "report" in at the end before Bethesda.

So, the Square-Enix hype trailer came out. So we're gonna at least see the new Deus Ex, the new Final Fantasy, and some expansion stuff for FFXIV. The rest is basically "top secret," but the trailer used Frog's theme from Chrono Trigger. Could we maybe see another Chrono game? That would definitely be unexpected-and-awesome.

It'll end up being the PSX version as a PS Classic on the store, if their past announcements are any indication.

As for the Nintendo World Championships, only one new game revealed as one of the competition games, though it was just a weird looking robots playing soccer with guns game called Blast Ball for the 3DS. It actually looked really fun, and with the HUD looked like Metroid Prime Soccer, but nothing much. Super Mario Maker, as it's now called, totally stole the show though, thanks in part to the finalists who played the four custom levels made by members of the Treehouse. Even if all of this was just a convoluted excuse to show off Mario Maker, it was worth it because this was a far better way to show off the game then just mentioning it or doing videos on the Direct, because the levels they showed were amazing. Plus there's some new features, including the one I was waiting for, taking characters and objects that weren't in other games and re-doing them in one of the other art styles, like there was an SMB3 version fo Bowser Jr. and different versions of Kuriboh's Shoe. It looked really good, and the physics seemed to change between the four types.

It was a little rough at first since they did a bad job of telling you who was who in gameplay and they never did show any of the player's faces as they played, but as the entrants pared down they got better at showing who was who.. Some details defenitely need to be ironed out, but it turned out pretty good at the end.

So now....Bethesda. Hmm.

Bethesda:

Doom trailer first. Very classic gameplay, and very very pretty. No health regeneration. Ammo and health pickups. Unabashed gore everywhere -- from graphic impact shots, to melee takedowns, to the ultra-gory chainsaw attacks. Looks promising, if this is your kinda thing. Unsure if this is a reboot or some kind of sequel. Multiplayer should be fast and entertaining. Should. And there's a multiplayer level editor.

Battlecry looks like Team Fortress with melee weapons. Could be fun, though not really my thing.

Dishonored 2. I never played the first one, so I'm not really up to speed on this series. Looks amazing, though. Lady character in a longcoat! Always appreciated. The original Dishonored has also been updated in the form of a "Definitive Edition" for next-gen consoles. I guess it's good time to get into the series.

Elder Scrolls Online stuff. It's well known that I'm not an MMO girl, though, so I kinda snoozed through this. But of course the Nords would ride bear cavalry into battle. And the debut of Elder Scrolls Legends.... which is a card game??? Free to play, though. No announcements about Elder Scrolls 6.

FAAAAAALLLLLLOOOOUT.

HOLY BALLS. This game looks amazing -- I can barely process words right now. So glad the male-only rumor was false. Powered armor revamped extensively, AND JETPACKS, and and and SO MANY MODIFICATIONS AND YOU CAN BUILD YOUR HOUSE AND AND AND

Well. That was a pretty good showing by Bethesda.

Doom looked great, though it's obviously on a PC. Really nice, cool old school shooter game with the right modern sensibilities mixed in. The Melee FInishers were nice, and overall it just looked like it played nicely. The Multiplayer seems like standard stuff though I guess you can get turned into a demon? The Snapmap Level Editor (aka Halo Forge copy) and custom stuff looked nice enough, and of course the BFG was in there.

Battlecry....eh, yeah, whatever, welcome to the crowded market of trying to seep off of Team Fortress 2.

Dishonored 2....was just a CG trailer. Still, looks neat, and hey, it's Princess Emily all grown up. Though I guess the guy's still in it. Looking forward to it, and I suddenly now see why the first game was recently free on PS Plus and the DLC was put on sale, with that Next Gen version coming.

Elder Scrolls Online....eh, again, whatever. This was my water break. And....a CG trailer for a card game? Wha?

Oh Fallout 4, I am going to waste so much time on you and your crafting. Dammit. Looks really nice, and the confirmation of the prologue taking place pre-war is neat, though that face customization bit is really awkward if you take it as face value rather then just a neat way to integrate customization. Really cool that at least 100 names are in the game so your character has a chance of being called by name instead of always "Vault Dweller" or "that guy." The PipBoy App is totally gimmicky, but it's neat, and the Pipboy shell is similarly gimmicky and neat. Dog looks like he'll be useful, though it'll jsut be something else I need to keep alive. I was fully expecting it to be a Spring 2016 thing, but this Fall in November is a nice surprise.

Also, that App game being Free to play BUT with no paywalls looks like it's worth a look. Clearly some sort of morale boosting side project they did as they developed the main game, so no need to worry about making money on it.

I would say I was surprised there was no Prey 2, but given that game's unfortunate luck, I'm really not.

So yeah. Really, really good stuff to look forward to for the most part. This and the Mario Maker stuff is a nice perfect start to E3.

Nintendo World Championship should just be a thing that happens every year. Like, I was more entertained by that whole show than I'll be by most of E3.

NWC was highly enjoyable for sure.  FPS mech soccer looked a little weak, but Super Mario Maker looked absolutely bonkers.  Very much looking forward to that game.

Halo 5, yeah yeah. But hey look, it's Cap'n Tightpants!

Backward compatibility, finally. You've got to download the games to your HD, though. But it's nice that they incorporate Xbone's new features.

Revisiting Fallout 4 in the Microsoft conferen----- PC MODS CAN NOW BE TRANSFERRED TO CONSOLES, YAAAAAAAAAAAAASSS. Additional footage of the new powered armor, which looks amazing. It now operates like I always thought it should. It's like a mini-mech. I will have so much fun customizing it.

Forza 6. .....In which they lower an actual Ford GT from the goddamn ceiling. Gorgeous car. Though that's a pretty over-the-top product placement, Ford. Would've liked to see gameplay rather than a trailer. Forza's in-game stuff always looks better than the cinematics do. I'm not really into racing games, but I've always had a soft spot for Forza.

Whole bunch of indie stuff, most of which looks pretty nice.

Rise of the Tomb Raider looks gorgeous. Gonna be broke this winter.

A collection 30 classic Rare games should appeal to lots of people. 30 for $30 is a good deal. Rare's also launching a pirate MMO, Sea of Thieves.

Fable Legends. Ehhh..... would need to see more than a trailer. But really not all that excited about it.

Oculus / VR / hologram stuff. Holographic Minecraft. That looks, uhhh... neat. Good game to test it on, I suppose.

Gears of War remasters -- I guess this is the finale of the show. And a new Gears of War something or other, but I've gotta run to town -- and I don't really care much about it -- so this is where I leave it.

No big surprises, really, but nice to see some of the footage.

A pretty good, solid show from Microsoft, but I'm not going to lie, nothing really hyped me up....though that's probably why I went for the PS4 instead of X Box one, so that's just me. Not bad though. The opening montage with the Man of Steel theme just kinda makes me want a Master Chief/Gears/Lara Croft crossover though.

Halo 5 Guardians looks like....Halo. Which is fine, though it was nice to see Buck from ODST return with Nathan Fillion in tow.

Backwards compatibility is pretty huge and nice, and I can definitely see this being a good reason for grabbing that 1 TB drive or the external HD's. They kinda glossed over how it would only be for x number of games at first and get updated, and that didn't work out last time. The modular controller is interesting though I wonder how helpful that'll really be beyond the CoD eSports MLG crowd. Kinda neat that it was more then just that headphone jack.

Recore, by Keiji Inafune and ex members of Retro. All CG, and looks like a neat idea, but too early to tell. Anime Fallout?

Fallout 4 was the exact same footage from last night, with some of the bits between what was shown filled in. Still looks fine, surprised there was no mentioned of timed exclusive DLC like the last few Bethesda games. Yes, the PC mods being available is kinda huge and crazy, though being free we can assume they won't bother with the paid mods thing again. I wodner how it'll woprk though since obviously the stuff that ups the textures will obviously not be able to work on the console.

EA.....eh. Whatever, other then getting everyone ready to fall asleep in an hour or so. Plants vs Zombies Garden Warfare 2....again, eh, but probably cool for people who liked the first.

Forza 6 - GT40 plus other cars racing. Fine.

Division is still the same thing, though I never heard them call it a tactical RPG before. Beta starts in December, and you get Vegas and Vegas 2 for free.

Gigantic is another TF2 wannabe. Next.

Indies. My one problem with Indie games becoming so good now is that there are just too many games to play now. A lot of this stuff looked good, but I am getting a little wary of everything being artsy and fluffy. I'm okay with it, but eventually they all start to bleed together and lose their unique identity, which isn't good. I note that they were very careful to say these were console exclusive DEBUTS despite what the text on screen said. Cuphead still looks amazing though, it needs to be out already.

The X Box version of Steam Early Access....I'm to the only one worried, right? Early Access has some good stuff, but for the most part its a bunch of unfinished trash that'll never be finished, so it needs another pass if they want to do that.

Tomb Raider gameplay looked nice, though it felt a little scripted and set-piecey for me. I see Lara is STILL falling off of things, but at least she doesn't seem as scared of it anymore as much as annoyingly inconvenienced. Can't wait for the Definitive Edition on PS4 in 2016!

Rare Replay for $30 bucks is a good deal. Obviously missing some notable games like Goldeneye and the DK games, but still a neat deal - a bunch of games made by people who are no longer at the company! Sea of Thieves could be neat, because I'm all for a new pirate game....no so much for an MMO/Survival game though.

Fable Legends, even with Cersei Lannister threatening me, I'll pass.

The VR stuff seems kinda desperate, almost like Microsoft going "See! We can do VR too! We're making good with everyone so hopefully one of these things'll stick!" The Minecraft hololens thing is interesting and gimmicky, but I just don't trust it, and honestly, Hololens is a lot more interesting for things other then games, to be honest.

Gears of War Ultimate Edition, first game remastered - fine, but I wonder why they didn't go Master Chief Collection and include all of them. New Gears was WAY too damn dark, I hope that was just miscalculated gamma and brightness settings and not indicative of the game. Fine, I guess.

And that's that. Strong, if somewhat safe line-up. Nothing REALLY new, just more of the same, which is fine, but nothing mind blowing.

Next up, naptime - I mean, EA.

-sigh-

EA's definitely a snoozefest, although it's nice to see more of Mass Effect -- and get an official title for it. I'm glad they didn't tack the "4" on there. Makes it clear that it's not a direct sequel to Shepard's story. I still hope we get to choose what species we wanna play as, but not getting my hopes up. Especially if the main character is an N7. That's only an Alliance -- and thus only human --thing. I'd rather play as an asari, though. They were so fun in ME3 multiplayer.

Sports are not my thing, but the "scan your face into the game" mechanic showing up in NBA Live could influence other genres. Instead of making a character with a builder, like in Mass Effect, you can potentially just scan your face with your phone. That could be neat. Although I don't necessarily want to play as "me" all the time, I suppose. But it's an interesting feature.

edit: Star Wars Battlefront looks amazing. Wow.

Go straight to hell EA.

....okay, fine. I hope every year my joking about EA becoming boring would be a joke, but it always comes true. Honestly I walked away multiple times to tidy up and wash dishes and whatnot during this. Just a poorly thought out show most of the time.

Mass Effect: Andromeda got a neat CG trailer and a vague sure-to-be-delayed Holiday 2016 time frame. Still not really showing anything, but hey, at least it's something more then artwork.

Need for Speed. All I can say is...what does a reboot even mean in this case? It's a racing game, was there some secret throughline story in all the games I missed that got too convuluted that I missed? Anyway, it's cars going fast, and while the transition between FMV to in-game was slick, it's...racing. It's fine, looks okay.

Old Republic Expansion. MMO. Pretty CG trailer. Don't care, just give us KotOR III already.

Unravel looks really cute and looks gorgeous here and there, and the lead developer was so nervous I wanted to pat him on the shoulder and tell him it'd be okay. Looks nice.

More Garden Warfare 2, fine, whatever.

SPORTS. OH GOD MY PREDICTION WAS BASICALLY EXACTLY RIGHT. If you care, look it up elsewhere. The Pele thing would've been really cool...as a seperate little meeting later on at a special event, not in the middle of the conference. Sports and Mobile just ground this thing to a halt and killed the hype and momentum for the show. Stupid, stupid decision. I know they ahve to do the sports since that sells well, but this was not the time for Mobile.

Mirror's Edge always got me too queasy to play, but this looks pretty good. Weird it's a prequel though. Looks fine, and February release date....for now.

Credit to Star Wars Battlefront - after following a load of crap surrounding Mirror's Edge Catalyst, it looked DAMN good. Wow. I have reservations with it because of the last two Battlefields not going so well and being so broken, but....I'll be honest, the whole time I was watching I wasn't thinking of that and just went "Ooooh!" the whole time, and only paused when Vader popped up and "Hey wait, this never happend!" popped into my head. Looks good, out November.

Well, that sucked overall. Now we see how Ubisoft goes.

Ubisoft. Huh. Probably the weakest showing they've had in years, and while it's not bad, none of it was really wow-ing or even that notable. Huh.

New South Park game, direct sequel to the last one. Different devs, and it's a superhero game instead of the fantasy one, cool idea. Not a huge fan of the show but it was well done, so this should be good for fans.

Note on Aisha Tyler, she's still pretty good at this hosting gig and can recover really well, and plays off the less entertaining or more awkward presenters. No heels this year so she doesn't tower over everyone again.

For Honor, a new squad based game that's basically Deadliest Warrior except it looks less stupid, with Dynasty Warriors style fodder to fill in the armies of both sides. Could be neat, demo's apparently out soon if not already.

Expansion pack for the Crew this November. Supposed to be boring and lackluster so....eh.

Trials Fusion Awesome Max, aka The Internet Expansion Pack. Stupid, but the original was stupid too, so whatever, it can work.

The Division. The longer it takes for this to come out the more and more dull it looks. I guess the Dark Zone is the PVP area? I don't know, it just gets less interesting every time new stuff pops up.

Anno 2205, I keep forgetting about this series. Looks fine, sort of a weird Sim City meets Civilization in Space game.

Just Dance 2016. No Kinect/Camera = Easy Mode, basically. And oh God, Jason DeRulo is horrible live, and a quick glance shows he's apparently always like that when not in a studio?  The Music Subscription service is an interesting idea, a flat monthly fee to ahve access to all the songs instead of buying piecemeal is a good option for rhythm games to have, honestly.

Rainbow Six Siege has Angela Basset in it. Huh. Still looks fine, though again, all these squad based games are diluting each other.

New Trackmania, Turbo for consoles. Looks fun, and the randomly generated tracks seems like a chaotic, good idea. Interested in multiplayer since prior to this it was all asynchronous turn-by-turn instead of competitive.

Assassin's Creed Syndicate gets its fancy CG trailer, I suppose gameplay will be at Sony since it wasn't at Microsoft. I love how Jacob hands his hat over to one of his boys to change to his hood.

ANOTHER squad based Tom Clancy game, new Ghost Recon. The fact that this is the THIRD one of these at this presentation really hurts it, which is kind of a shame since it looks the most promising and interesting of the three. Still, man, it's just too damn much. I swear, if this game also involves climbing towers to unlock the map I will punch a random person in the street.

So, not a bad showing per-say, but just really disappointing and samey, and really not that fresh feeling. Hrmph. We'll have to see if Sony ends the night on a good note.

Yeaaaah, Ubisoft was really boring. Nothing unexpected. Team-based multiplayer games are apparently in this season. None of them really impressed me. Although that Ghost Recon game was the best of Ubisoft's lot. It looks kind of like a mix of Just Cause and the old Mercenaries series. But with Square expected to announce Just Cause 3, Ghost Recon will probably get pushed to the wayside and forgotten about.

Assassin's Creed: Syndicate -- sincerely hoping that you get to pick which twin you play as. But it looks good, regardless.

Anno looked interesting, though. Probably the only game other than Syndicate I'd look into further.

Weeeeell, they finally caved and did the FF7 remake. Enjoy it, fanboys. I always thought FF6 was way better.

Microsoft had a better showing overall, with the bigger blockbuster titles. I do give Sony credit for showing off some of their more creative and unorthodox titles. Really glad we got to see some gameplay footage of No Man's Sky, though it wasn't much. Still no release date. Bah! And the Last Guardian. Glad to see it's been brought back from the dead. It's very pretty, and I'm sure it'll be emotionally devastating. Otherwise, big titles that everyone anticipated already. The one new game with the robot-dinosaur-things looked neat, though.

Looks like you can choose which twin you play as in Assassin's Creed: Syndicate, so that's nice.

Well. I actually think Sony had the best showing, even if you ignore the fanboy hype for FFVII and Shenmue III (which, by the way, took Kickstarter down for a few minutes) but both console companies had a good solid performance today, which is nice to see.

The Last Guardian Lives! 2016 release, looks pretty though it kinda looks like it could've been a late era PS3 game, not that it matters since it still looks good. People are worried about either the kid or creature dying at the end, but honestly, I think seeing the creature alone react to you screwing up and dying as the kid might be too much for me to deal with. Argo almost crushed me in Shadow of the Colossus so who knows.

Horizon Zero Dawn is an interesting looking game. Post apocalyptic Earth with surviving humans, with...robot dinosaurs? I'm intrigued at least, though it kinda got lost in the shuffle with what came later.

New Hitman CG trailer, cool. Curious to see how things'll go down story wise given what happen at the end of Absolution.

Street Fighter V is....Street Fighter. All right. Neat to see Birdie back, and Cammy is...Cammy. Yeah, so what if she was a childhood crush, I don't care. <.<

No Man's Sky is still looking too good to be true, though at least there was actual gameplay shown. Hmmm.

That weird Move game, dreams, was....huh. Looks like it'll be a super detailed version of Mario Paint? Hmm.

Really cool that the Sony AC trailer focused on Evie, nice way to balance it out. I think it was confirmed that the character you play depends on the story mission, but in the open world and most sidequests you can play as either. Looks like she'll be a little more finesse like, say, Ezio or Altair then brute force like her brother and Edward.

That World of Final Fantasy game looks kinda neat if a little too sugary sweet. I was hoping it would be a confirmation of localization of the new PS4 Dissidia from Japan, but eh.

I won't lie. While I would much rather they work on a brand new game, I got a little excited upon seeing that FFVII Remake trailer, though I was hoping it would be more a sequel then a remake. Once I recognized that slide and playground I lost some interest. Wonder if it'll look just like AC at this point. Whatever, I'll play it, but yeah, there are a couple other FF's I prefer. Though.....once I saw the green wavy lines on screen, I did instantly know that was the Lifestream. <.<

Indies were cool, not as much as past years though since they had lots more games to show. Mother Russia Bleeds I might get just for the name.

Shenmue III. Everything's coming back. Kickstarter game, and it looks like it's well on its way of funding. Obviously, the 2 million dollars is just to prove to other investors the interest is there, but we shall see. Wonder if they'll port the first two or something for newbies, like they did with Yakuza.

The Arkham Knight trailer with the Joker cremation was...kinda messed up. Seems like you play as someone other then Batman for the Scarecrow Nightmare Missions.

Morpheus....didn't show. Then again, how could they, it has to be a hands-on thing.

Black Ops III, typical Call of Duty, fine, whatever.

Stars Wars in both Disney Infinity and Battlefront varieties. Fine, the latter still looks REALLY good.

Uncharted gameplay looks really, really nice, it makes me really wish I liked the series more.

So....not bad. Tomorrow we get Nintendo in its own little world giving no f*cks about what everyone else is doing, and Square Enix.....showing I'm not sure what else.

No, seriously. Sony showed more shooters than anything else in an obvious bid to get into North America. Sony's life-blood is RPGs. My lifeblood on consoles is RPGs. I'm pretty miffed right now.

Goddamit, Squeenix. That Worlds of Final Fantasy has probably sucked all the life out of Dissida Arcade for the rest of us, and an FF VII remake? Really?! If this is the Sony press conference my soul is reeling in anticipation of how bad the real S-E conference will be. The only promising trailer from you was Hitman, and that's more really good PR work than actual game.

No Man's Sky still looks like they haven't addressed the inter-personal conflict I was talking about. It looks more like an elegant proof of concept masquerading as a sandbox RPG than a real "game." I hope I'm wrong, but at this point my hopes for NMS are basically about its sequel where they actually spend some time thinking about gameplay. It takes more than oodles of proceedurally-generated content to make a game.

Otherwise, Sony is doubling-down on the exclusive content and windowed exclusives which seem to have done so well for the PS4. It's a move which makes sense, but it's really annoying.

I imagine that I will cool down overnight. It was a pretty good conference. I'm just upset that the only conference it looks like I will get to watch was Sony of all companies going Shooter Shooter Star-Wars-Shooter for almost half the conference.

Some direct interaction with other players like an MMO. PvP. Co-op. Something like that. Exploration and discovery are great, but it needs something else added to it or else it will get old.

Well, it may end up not being your thing.

It's never been billed as an MMO, nor has it really been marketed that way. It's always been billed as an exploration adventure game -- the online features just enhance that. People are excited about exploring a huge universe. That's what generated the buzz. Not the notion of cruising around space with other players. I don't want it to be even a vaguely conventional MMO.

They'll likely have a feature where you can warp to where your friends are, and there may be some hub worlds, but the MMO features are not what the game's about. If exploration is going to bore you after a while, then it's definitely not gonna be a game for you. And that's fine. A lot of people find that kind of stuff boring after a while. Pure exploration is a huge draw for a fair chunk of gamers, though, which is probably why the game has so much buzz, and it's something that's been severely lacking in a lot of modern games.

But I love exploration and hate people -- so I'm definitely looking forward to a game where I can boldly go explore a universe worth of planets and have a 0.001% chance of encountering someone unless I'm already friends with them. People are awful!

I'm very excited for the game as it's been presented.

No Man's Sky seems like a great technical achievement, but I share the concern of how much interest it will keep. A sandbox is good and all, but it needs a narrative to stitch it all together. I just hope it's able to provide that and give us a reason to want to go to all these different places for more than just exploration's sake.

And since you guys are too much of grumps to admit it, I'm pretty over the moon about the FF7 remake. I mean, I'm way more keen on Uncharted 4 and that Horizon game where you play as Ygritte. But man, I'm all aboard the FF7 hype train.

I am cautiously optimistic about the FF VII remake mostly because of the additional compilation stories really messing with the characters' personalities.

Tifa is the one who's had the least amount of Flanderization done but the others... Yeesh. I hope that they keep the script similar at the very least. Maybe a new translation to avoid things like "This guy are sick."

My husband played FF VII for the first time last year and it was really something to go back to the game after the compilation and realize how different the characters are. Aerith is kind of goofy, flirty, and definitely not incorruptible pure, pureness as she's been displayed in recent media. Tifa was the team mom when you got down to it. She kept everyone in line as much as you possibly can with the team you have. She didn't let Cloud mope around like she did in AC. That was just odd...

Cloud was stand offish but he didn't angst as much as I remembered. And when he did it was when Sephiroth was clearly screwing with him. After he finds himself he's a bit awkward but sincere enough.

Barrett... Just poor Barrett. My husband was surprised when at the beginning of the game Barrett gives his whole speech to Aerith's mom about how he wants to be home with Marlene and give her the support she needs but can't until he's sure the world will be safe for her when she grows up. He knows it's wrong to be a terrorist but he doesn't see any other way. My husband up until playing the game thought Barrett had the depth of a puddle.

The less said about Sephiroth the better, really...

The new players will see the original characterizations and say it's wrong. If they go with the Flanderized personalities the old fans will be sitting there with that itching feeling going "this isn't how I remember..." So there's no winning situation even with characterization for SE.

Then how are they going to handle the overworld? Something like Gran Pulse in Final Fantasy XIII? Because until you activated the warp points, that was a lot of boring walking...

I'm excited to see the updated graphics but the game is going to get eaten alive by its own hype. Nothing will compare to the nostalgia tinted game from 18 years ago.
