Seriously.  How does this game not have a topic??  I mean LOOK AT THAT SHIT.  XD

I'm am beyond hyped for this game.  The last game revived the series and made it better than it had ever been before with better character balancing, an EX meter that takes the best of Street Fighter's super moves and makes them gory as all hell and a single player story mode that I'd argue is the best in any fighting game to date.  This one, the appear to double down on making it the MKII of the revival (aka, better in every way to the original).  Three styles per character, 20 year time jump, brutalities (never thought they'd actually be able to revive THIS and make it good), individual banter with every fight and even a system to punish rage quits online (QUITALITY!!).

I get a lot of fighting games to varying degrees.  Soul Calibur, Street Fighter, Bloody Roar, Marvel Vs. Capcom, ,Skullgirls and of course Super Smash Bros.  But the first fighting game that I absolutely loved was the original Mortal Kombat on SNES.  It was also the first video game that I actually sat down and beat (Christmas day, 1993 at my cousin's house).  It will always hold a place in my heart (before it rips it out, because....ya know, Mortal Kombat).

I've got my copy reserved on Steam with the Kombo Pack (Jason and Predator were too much to pass up).  Anyone else getting it?

Mortal Kombat has a special place in my heart because it was the first fighting game that I totally had free access to with my hand-me-down Sega Genesis, especially MKIII. The new game looks like it has some neat polish but the excitement for this series kinda died for me after Armageddon. I don't think I'd personally pick this one up but if it's a step in the right direction for this series I'll be super happy for it.

Well. You know, I understand they have to make hard choices for the roster, but I always consider their choices to be boring. Who needs 4 special army forces units that are so alike? Cassie Cage makes Johnny, Sonya, Jax and his daughter look boring as hell to me.  I don't get why they upgraded Rain and Tanya in such a cool fashion, but didn't make them part of the main roster.

(That Mileena and Kitana though. This must be their most awesome appearance yet).

ETA: Oh, they did have Shinnock make a return, which is kind of awesome.

Deception and Armageddon turned me off of Mortal Kombat for a while, but MK9 was a fantastic game. My main issue with the PS2 era of games was that the new characters were not all that fun and the new Kombat zones were kind of boring. Mortal Kombat is supposed to be kind of self-parody. It's so ridiculous in all of its elements and that is what makes it fun. On top of that the character designs are memorable. The PS2 era was far too serious, and took a lot of the great humor and ridiculousness out of the series. MK9 was still a little more serious than the original games, but that's okay with me since its a reboot. It can tell whatever story it wants, but the best thing is that MKX has great new characters AND cool, classic feeling arenas. I can't fucking wait to play this game.

I read the MKX DC comics and NeatherRealm did something REALLY important there:  Took all the shitty PS2-era characters and KILLED THE EVERLOVING FUCK OUTTA THEM.  I'm serious.  The first 3 pages has Tsu Hao getting his head punched through by Scorpion, Mavado gets bissected by Cassie Cage with his own sword.  It's fucking great. XD

Also, Kotal Khan is a pretty cool guy.  I mean, his character.  He's like Outworld's version of Obama: Striving for change and improved foreign relations with every single person trying to fight with him over either his claim to the throne (Mileena runs the Outworld Birthers movement) or just straight up feeling threatened by him due to his predecessor.

Also, you may be wondering why I'm here on LA as oppose to playing the game right now.  Well, that's because Steam screwed the pooch.  They offered a streaming download service on the game (as oppose to pre-install, which EVERYONE PREFERS) that just straight up doesn't work.  You load up the menu, try and pick a way to fight and the game just crashes to the main menu.  T_T

Dear lord, that sounds horrible. But just curious, why on Steam and not on console? I figured buying a fighter for console was more popular unless it was being straight up emulated.

Hear lots of great stuff about the comics, too. I like some of the Deception characters though. Like that Ashrah, just the idea of an ascending demon appeals to me.

I don't have/want a ps4/xbone. WiiU and PC are plenty for me. And the ps3/360 versions were pushed back to June. Might very well be that they could be outright cancelled if we don't hear more info on them. Besides, my PC's strong enough to handle the game and the fighting community there isn't half bad.

EDIT: also, all those launch bugs have now been fixed. The game started working properly at around 3PM on launch day. Shit is so cash.

I've enjoyed Street Fighter IV a lot more on PC than on console. Partly a necessity thing for me with my current living situation, but I also just prefer using a keyboard for fighters.

I've always been way more of a Street Fighter girl, but I always loved Mortal Kombat when I was a kid, though I haven't played one since Deadly Alliance. Did the PS2 era games really take themselves too seriously though? I recall thinking there was a lot of silliness in Deadly Alliance, though now that I think of it the stuff I remember was mostly in the form on non-canonical easter eggs or jokes (Kano's breakfast cereal, Cooking With Scorpion etc) Johnny Cage's ludicrous filmography is probably canon though, let's face it. I'm still waiting for The Gist of My Fist to reach Netflix.

a system to punish rage quits online (QUITALITY!!)

Hahaha, that's pretty rad.

Apparently, there's an alternate costume for Johnny Cage that can be unlocked that's just from one of his films ("Ninja Mime")

mk-costumes-alt-johnny-cage-ninja-mime.j

Also, the PS2 generation MKs problem honestly was just the clear lack of gameplay polish the series went through in the jump from 2D to 3D.  It was their in MK4 too, but it was BLATANTLY obvious in Deadly Alliance.  That being said, I still liked the idea (if not the implementation) of Kongquest mode.  It basically refined itself into the story modes of MK9 and MKX.

What really revived the series is the establishment of 3D characters on a 2D plane.  It allowed them to actually make a decent battle system for the first time since MKII (the dial-a-combo bullshit from MK3 did NOT age well).

The Best Friend Zaibatsu had the best way of comparing Street Fighter and Mortal Kombat.

Street Fighter is like that high school friend of yours who went away for a bit and studied abroad and you didn't hear from him for awhile.  Then all of a sudden he comes back and it's just as cool as when you were younger.  You have the best time together and you love it always.

Whereas Mortal Kombat is that one high school friend who sorta became a piece of shit during his early 20's.  Like he got a shitty retail job, maybe became borderline alcoholic and nobody wanted to be around him for a while.  And now, he's cleaned up his act.  He's going to meetings, he's taking community college courses and has even managed to get out of the hell that is customer service into a steady paying career.  So you're happy for him and you wanna genuinely pat him on the back and congratulate him.

That's a damn good analogy.

As for console vs. PC interface for fighters, I suppose they are both computers so it's all really the same thing until you get into the matter of controls. I'd take a controller over a keyboard personally, though an arcade set up is considered ideal by some people I know who were big into Street Fighter: Third Strike in college.

plug in any 360 controller into any laptop made after maybe 2007 and it works automatically.

Admittedly for this game, I installed PS3 drivers on my PC for it (I prefer their D-pad for Mortal Kombat).
