What's this? No post in this section for a year? Dreadful. Let's start an RP, eh?

Castle Ravenloft
ytT2AwE.jpg

"Under raging stormclouds, a lone figure stands silhouetted against the ancient walls of castle Ravenloft. Count Strahd von Zarovich stares down a sheer cliff at the village below. A cold, bitter wind spins dead leaves around him, billowing his cape in the darkness. Lightning splits the clouds overhead, casting stark white light across him. Strahd turns to the sky, revealing the angular muscles of his face and hands. He has a look of power and of madness. His once handsome face is contorted by a tragedy darker than the night itself. Rumbling thunder pounds the castle spires. The wind's howling increases as Strahd turns his gaze back to the village. Fas below, yet not beyond his keen eyesight, a party of adventurers has just entered his domain. Strahd's face forms a twisted smile as his dark plan unfolds. He knew they were coming, and he knows why they came, all according to his plan. He, the master of Ravenloft, will attend to them. Another lightning flash rips through the darkness, its thunder echoing through the castle's towers. But Strahd is gone. Only the howling of the wind or perhaps a lone wolf fills the midnight air. The master of Ravenloft is having guests for dinner. And you are invited."

What is this?

This is my attempt at a play by post of the classic AD&D module Castle Ravenloft. I will be updating the mechanics to the 4th Edition of Dungeons and Dragons because I find that one the most interesting and also fun. I have chosen the Ravenloft adventure because it's a classic, and has a fairly compelling narrative, and I'd like to share that story with you.

I've never played D&D or any other nerdgame before, is this for me?
If you are reading the Roleplay section of a Zelda fanforum, probably! This is basically a roleplay with a few numbers to make combat consistent and agreeable. I will also help streamline character creation for you (the hard part of D&D) and have a small combat tutorial. Other then that, it's all about your ability to write for a character and interact with the world which I will be writing.

Ok, how do I sign up?

You just have to make a character! I'll be accepting 4 - 6 characters for this story. There are two ways to sign up.

For both I'll need your bio. Your name, age, a bit of backstory on the world: You guys are traveling fantasy heroes. You've had a bit of experience, so you should mention one cool thing you did in the past. Also your general origin, after that, the ways split.

-The Easy Way: This way lets me handle all of the mechanical details of your character creation based on your backstory, just make sure you answer the following questions:

  1. What is the most important thing for a warrior?
    a) Controlling the battlefield
    b) Leading others
    c) Protecting the weak
    d) Striking down your foes
  2. Where do you draw your power from?
    a) Practice and discipline
    b) Magical energies
    c) The natural world
    d) Your own mental power
    e) The shadows and dark places
    f) From a higher power
  3. What was your life like before you were an adventurer (a sentence or two will suffice. Or more)
  4. Obviously if you are a fantasy race, mention that here.

- The Hard Way: if you know how to make a 4th edition D&D character, here's what I'm doing:

Level: 7
Abilities: Point buy (22 Points!)
Themes/Backgrounds: Yes please! No Dragonmarks.
Inherent Bonuses: Yes
Bonus Feats: Melee Training, Versatile Training, Improved Defenses

Gear: Magic Items of 8/7/6, free Adventuring pack and 100 gold

Don't make a vampire, Vryloka or any undead.

Thank you! I hope this seems interesting!
EDIT: Oh, I have homebrew Zelda races and it'd be cool with me if you wanted to use them.

Color me interested. I've really been wanting to get back into writing lately, and my brother keeps telling me about his D&D group out west, so it sounds like a lot of fun. I'm in the middle of my last semester, but my class work load isn't terrible, so I'll do my best to keep up. I'll come up with my character info later, since it's late and I need to get to bed.

Excellent! There's quite a variety of races and classes available in 4e, so you can probably be whatever you need that's even vaguely fantasyish. So please feel free to make whatever, as it likely either exist or can be reskinned into existance.

Ugh! I don't have home Internet right now, otherwise I'd be in this in a flash. 1/1,000th of my job has me selling RPG dice, and I've wanted nothing more than to try d&d out since.

How often do you have internet access? We may be able to work with this.

Pretty much 8:30-5:30, M-F. I suppose I could prep at home and post during the day, but I'm not sure how this would 'flow'.

In the interest of helping facilitate this easier and actually being useful in this mod role I have two sites if you haven't already looked into them to help run the game.

The first is roll20.com that allows you to build maps and place character tokens, etc so that it's easier for the players to visualize. Also allows you to create macros for your rolls.

The other is http://www.myth-weav.../sheetindex.php for storing character sheets in an easy to read format.

I know there were a lot of tools for 4E if you were a dungeons and dragons insider but I don't know if they're still online.

They are, and I have access to them.
I was going to just use my Gdocs to host the sheets as PDF files, and show the battlefield as embeded images at the top of each iniative order.

Roll20 is pretty excellent though.

I'm thinking if you can get something up every 1-3 days, that'll be fine.

Sorry for the delay, let's go ahead and get this thing started.

Character: Zorak LXXXVII

Race: Thri-Kreen

For those who don't know what Thri-kreen are:

Class: Barbarian

Age: 3

Bio: Once a member of the revered Zorak hive collection, this Thri-kreen only knows two simple life goals. 1. Protect the hive, and 2. Destroy the Space Ghost. Zorak LXXXVII was separated from his hive a year after reaching maturity, 1 year old for Thri-kreen, after having spent his first adult year as a soldier for the hive. A combination of the deafening silence of being cut off from his hive collective and being unable to carry life goal number 1 has driven this insect into a state of madness. After catching wind of a journey to Castle Space Ghost everything began to make sense. Clearly, the only thing left for this insect is to carry out life goal number 2, DESTROY THE SPACE GHOST.

*Note: Due to being batshit crazy, Zorak tends to refer to many things as Space Ghost. In this case, both Castle Ravenloft and Count Strahd von Zarovich.

Being a Thri-kreen, Zorak is physically unable to speak Common, or any other language than the Thri-kreen language. Since Thri-kreen communicate through a series of clicking and various body language, it also impossible for any non-Thri-kreen to utilize their language. Zorak is, however, capable of understanding Common, both audibly and written, as well as being able to write it himself. However, given that he does not carry a white board and dry-erase marker with him wherever he goes, he typically communicates by angrily clicking and pointing at things, and occasionally maiming the unfortunate adventure who doesn't understand fast enough.

As for the stat points and abilities, I'll leave that part to you Moriatti. Just do whatever you think works best for his class and race. Hope this character works for you.

I was just gonna go as soon as we had enough people. I can run with as little as 3, but 4-5 is really preferred. If we get 2 complete apps, I'll try and convince a friend or two to sign up.
