I don't know. Maybe I'm becoming bitter because I'm normally the most optimistic Star Wars fan ever (eg I've never disliked Jar Jar) but I can't get past that stupid new lightsaber.

It was exciting, and I liked what I saw. I have no doubt they'll be better than the prequels (or at least meet the standard of Revenge of the Sith, which was fairly decent). Keep hearing rumors about the plot, but it's still up in the air. Was hoping for Jaina Solo to be the main character, but it sounds like something totally new.

I'm noting a relative absence of lens-flare, but there are still too many shiny things.
I've said it before, but I have serious misgivings about Abrams directing effective reboots for SF's big-two franchises. Abrams makes good popcorn flicks and really likes lighting effects, but basically since Lost he's played everything safe. He hasn't done anything bad, but he hasn't done anything remarkable for a very, very long time.
The new lightsaber doesn't look too bad. It's clear the designer thought the cruciform hilt would look way cooler than it does. It doesn't look bad, but it does look cluttered. Part of the beauty of lightsabers is their spartan design, and how that contrasted with the spacepunk tubes and wires and buttons and lights everywhere else. It made lightsabers feel anachronistic in a good way.
I said I didn't think Abrams completely got the Star Wars visual language and I still kinda think that. I expect this to be like Into Darkness; a good popcorn flick. In a good situation it will wash out some of the bad taste of the prequels, but I don't think it will be good enough for me to actively want to watch it again.
EDIT: And down the tubes go all my hopes they were doing a Jedi Outcast movie.

Someone else said that since the Sith pretty much have to start from scratch, that 'new' lightsaber might just be their shitty first prototype and that it won't be the final design or whatever. I hope so because that design is dumb.
I'm sad I didn't see any Gwendoline or Lupita. :C

I will be glad one day when people wont be so unfair to the prequel movies though. They are so much better than they are made out to be by some fans.

Lightsaber explained, though I doubt anybody has actually missed this.

What people haven't really brought up yet is that there are metals in the Star Wars universe (that are still in nu-canon) that easily deflect lightsabers. Magna Guard staffs are impervious to lightsaber damage, it turns out. So it's not like that can't also be transcribed to lightsaber hilts.

In that case why isn't the hilt wholly made up of impervious material?

Well, who is to say it isn't? Unless you are referring to every hilt that has appeared in movies past, then I'd say, who knows? The only instance that lightsabers have been destroyed on screen is in The Phantom Menace and Attack of the Clones. I'd postulate that the metal that this new lightsaber uses is probably not a very good container for the kyber crystals that channel the energy. From the teaser, that lightsaber burns a little differently than the ones we've seen in the past. There is a strangeness to it. This is just speculation of course.

But anyway, yeah, this is all speculation. And if this is some ancient lightsaber then fair enough. The Force that Awakens could be an ancient Sith with no thumbs.

Eh, I thought it looked OK, but it would look cooler if it were a bubble shield acting as a basket hilt. But that's just me.
