So, Kissy's topic got me thinking about the most defining moments of a nation's history and I began to wonder, if I was to rank events in my country's history, what would they be? What are the most defining moments in my country's history? What about other countries? So I thought I'd have a go and perhaps you should too. Here's my list:

5. English Reformation - involving Henry VIII declaring the Church of England's independence from Rome. Much of English history has been shaped by the Reformation, to which Christians are saying that you cannot understand England without knowing about the history of Christianity in this country. As much as I would like to protest, they are actually right. Quite a lot of our history was determined by our Protestantism. Strangely, despite our break away from Catholicism, the habit of not eating meat on Fridays has remained, which segues into my next point.

4. Immigration (from all times) - I've had to lump them all together, because they're all important. Brits owe the fish part of Fish and Chips to the Jews, and for some bizarre reason, Catholicism (an imported religion, let's face it) established the habit of eating fish on Fridays and hence Fish and Chips on Fridays.  Most of our famous construction companies are Irish. Since the 70s our corner shops have been associated with Indian, Pakistani or even Bengali shopkeepers, one-third of all native Londoners can trace their heritage back to a black person even if they're white, we owe Savile Row's fame to Hugenots fleeing persecution in Europe. Even the Danes held some influence. There's places up north called Scunthorpe and Braithwaite, which were all named by Viking invaders. And of course, there's the Romans. And let's not forget, our monarchy is German.

3. Magna Carta - despite the fact that upon retrospection, not much emphasis was actually given to the Magna Carta in my history lessons, it is important in that it led to better laws that would eventually replace it. Interestingly, all but three of the original clauses in this document have been repealed.

2. Establishment of the NHS - free healthcare for those who need it. It's ultimately the most humanitarian of institutions our nation produced and our flawed.

1. The Two World Wars - these really did define a lot of current British attitudes and characteristics from distrust of those in power, stiff upper lip to bad food. I suspect that Americans only thought we have bad coffee, because we didn't actually have any during the war. And I shudder to think how many American GIs got the runs because some members of the British public were adulterating their butter with paraffin.

5. War of 1812; stopped the Americans from winning, I dunno?

4. Keeping Quebec part of Canada.

3. World Wars; from what I remember from Grade 10 history, this was probably when Canada started becoming more of an independent country.

2. Repatriating our constitution from Britain. No offense, Brits. :P

1. Tommy Douglas' healthcare program.

I'm not that knowledgeable about Canada, so my rankings probably differ from like Sharpy's or Rhia's or something.

You and the Brits burned down the original White House! Wave the maple leaf and be proud!

TOP FIVE PATRIOT VICTORIES OF 'MURICA

('cause like the badasses we are, all of our accomplishments are largely tied to WAR, rAAAAAAAAAAAAAH)

1. The American Revolution. 'Murica wouldn't be 'Murica without a violent rebellion against our British imperial overlords! Sure, Canada and a number of other countries gained their independence peacefully, but those guys are pussies! The best part of the revolution however, was not so much the revolution itself, but rather the political reformations and new philosophies championed by early American leaders. For better or worse, modern democracies around the world were at least partially shaped or reshaped by ideas that stemmed from our war for independence.

2. The Civil War. Being the greatest country in the world, 'Murica's greatest opponent could only ever be... 'Murica itself! The Civil War is still the most destructive conflict we've ever endured. The end result is obvious -- the southern states weren't allowed to break away from the union. But there were a ton of other related incidents that forever shaped the United States. The southern states were completely (and methodically) devastated in the war, their economy was uprooted, and the scars can arguably still be felt today. And, of course, there was that whole thing about freeing the slaves.

3. World War II. Not many people in America care about WWI, because we were only in it for like five minutes. World War II, though? Holy patriotism, Batman! World War II not only secured our place as a leading superpower, but it has had such a major impact on American identity and nationalism. There is no other point in history in which America looked so badass and heroic. History and military TV channels? 90% of their programming schedule is "WE BEAT THE NAZIS AND NUKED STUFF!!" It permanently reshaped how America handled foreign politics. We became the saviors of Europe. The world police. The opponents of tyranny! We still have bases in Germany and Japan because, well, why not? America had largely kept to itself until the World Wars. That, obviously, has completely changed. Now we feel justified doing whatever, 'cause we saved the world.

Whether you like it or not, COMMIES. =____=

4. The Debt Cold War. Speaking of Commies. After WWII, of course, two superpowers emerged -- 'MURICA and those cowardly Ruskies. We then engaged in the greatest and most epic of pissing contests. We fought proxy wars in Vietnam and Korea. We divided the world between the First World (pro-'Murica capitalist democracies) and the Second World (Commies and Commie sympathizers!). The rivalry fueled the space race and put us on the moon!

Of course, the US and Russia were effectively in a competition to see who could spend the most money on shiny things before ruining their economy. Capitalism allows for more financial tricks than communism does, so, of course, America managed to outlast Russia. The Soviets spiraled into financial and managerial oblivion. Russia had to reform itself into the Russian Federation. 'Murica endured and became the world's last great superpower.

Of course, we also plunged our country into massive debt. Specifically during the last couple years of it. Hit the 2 trillion mark in '86 and it just got exponentially worse from there, 'cause there was no way we were going to pay all that off anyway, so why worry about racking up more? Just put my yearly budget on the credit card, good sir. Nothing can go wrong.

BUT WE WON AND THAT IS WHAT COUNTS. Why does this impact the world? Well, America -- being the only genuine superpower left -- has been the leader of global policy since the end of the Cold War.

5. The Great Depression. Well, the Depression wasn't entirely our doing, but we definitely were the major contributor to what happened -- and it impacted the entire world. Gilded Age spending frenzies and financial mismanagement, especially in America, resulted in the economy having a heart attack. Our entire financial framework collapsed. Unless you were already super-wealthy, you were cast down into a horrific poverty that still haunts the psyche of older Americans. And it lasted for quite a while. The Depression also led to a number of pivotal reforms in America, courtesy of Franklin Roosevelt. Specifically, it led to a lot of our modern welfare programs. In an effort to get people working again, there were also a lot of public works projects -- bridge construction and such. And a lot of those bridges are (albeit scarily) still in use today.

It also greatly impacted American literature and art. Still does, actually.

It's probably too early to tell what its impact will be like in fifty or a hundred years, but I imagine 9/11 and the ensuing "War on Terrorism" would end up as one of those top five.

If I was being really snarky, Lena, I would say you didn't win the Cold War... you just didn't lose first. :P

Those 5+ times our SASR secretly saved all yo asses :3

I can only think of forming a federation/nation via voting alone rather than waging any wars.

Taming (mostly) this vicious, wild, rugged land.

Victorian bushfires.

Queensland floods.

Coming out of the GFC mostly unharmed.

Weve only been around for 112 years...

Let me think about Spain...

1-Discovery of America

2-Invasion Attempt of Great Britain

3-Independence War against the French

4-Spanish-American War

5-Civil War

Wow, we have fought against... everyone?

Pfft... so did we. That's just normal for a European nation. I mean, you also fought a war against the Dutch... who kind of managed a few victories against you through being able to ice-skate.

(Thanks QI)

I did not put it, because I consider that it is the necessary condition for everything that comes afterwards. That... and that I had to choose 5 and didn't want events that where in exactly the same period as others. And the Reconquista is severely mythified. :)

I love the parrot :D
