This is one ugly handheld. I see the reasoning behind it, but come on, put some effort in!

What in the fuck

It looks to me like a terrible design decission, it's like saying "We were wrong, 3D is irrelevant!". Apart from that, it looks hideous!

"TABLETS ARE HOT NOW, GUYS, LET'S MAKE THE NEW THING FLAT LIKE ONE OF THEM FANCY TABLETS EVEN THOUGH THE FOLDING DEVICES ARE WAY MORE CONVENIENT AND RELIABLE FOR GAMERS ON THE RUN."

Actually I think it's brilliant. My nieces and nephews tend to have... bad luck with the DS/3DS because of the hinges. They just break too easily. Plus there's the fact Nintendo has to warn parents NOT to let little kids use the 3D effect. So making a version of the 3DS that is geared towards kids that is more durable, cheaper, and doesn't cause headaches? It's a great idea.
Sure, it's ugly looking, but it gets the job done.

Don't worry, guys, the 3D camera still works.

That thing is literally the shape of a doorstop.

The design reminds me of one of those smart phones with the wedge design so it could be propped upright. Honestly though, I don't think it looks too terrible. If it means parents not having to worry about dumb ass kids breaking their expensive new toys then I am all for it.

Personally, I can't wait for Geometry Wars: 1D and Mighty Switch Force 1D.
....though, there's a part in Phantom Hourglass where you sovle a puzzle by closing the lid to "stamp" the image from one screen to the other. Did they just make it unwinnable?

Wow, that's a good memory DJ... I wonder how they would fix that.
I think it would be a good idea if the screen size was comparable to the XL. If I was purchasing, I'd be torn between the hand comfort of this and the bigger screen of the XL model. 3D I'm not that bothered by, although to be fair I've never seen it in action... maybe I'd be sold on it.

I think it would be comfy to hold, because the Wii U pad is surprisingly comfy to hold.

There's a sleep switch that does the function of closing the lid.Personally, I can't wait for Geometry Wars: 1D and Mighty Switch Force 1D.

It looks about the size and shape of a Wii U controller. I wonder if they're moving to a handheld that can function as a controller for their consoles.

"Guys. Guys.
I have are a really cool idea.
Let's make a brand new console.
A 3DS.....but - get this - it doesn't play in 3D. It's a 3D DS....without the 3D.
3D DS
Without the 3D.
Right?"

No, really, you couldn't get around the name '2DS'. They locked themselves into this when they decided to call it the '3DS'. I mean, the alternative is "Nintendo 3DS 2D" or something like "Nintendo 3DS Flat" or something like that. Either way, then people are buying it and going, "OMG WHERE IS THE 3D!?"
So it's at the very least honest about what it does. So again, I think it's a great idea and Nintendo is doing the best they can with what they have to work with. It doesn't look flattering and the name is going to be the bane of retail workers. But it'll do well once people figure it out.

Pretty much this. Everything I've read about the 2DS (mainly from Tumblr posts) is that its made with children in mind, what with the sturdier design and removing the 3D function.

"Nintendo 2DS is for the children ⊟ I thought Nintendo’s messaging and the 2DS’s design was pretty clear — it’s a system targeting kids, or parents buying a handheld for their kids. It solves three of the 3DS’s problems for that audience, right as Pokemon X/Y hits shelves: pricing, worries of 3D damaging eyes, and durability. For the rest of us who don’t care about those problems, we can keep playing our 3DSes and XLs, and wait for the next hardware iteration aimed toward teens and adults."Posted 29 August 2013 - 10:40 PM
I honestly thought it was a joke when I first saw it in Game Informer. It's so ugly and why would Nintendo do another 2D hand-held game system? The lack of hinges is nice, but you're going to need a bag to lug that thing around (forget sliding it in a pocket), super duper screen protectors to keep the screens from getting scratched in said bag and it looks very uncomfortable to play for long periods of time. I like the hinge-style on my gameboy because I can play it sitting up or laying down and it's easy to toss in my hoodie pocket or purse.
DJ: I saw the ad for the price drop/Zelda bundle and started drooling. I have decided that it is what my next pay check is going to.

I understand the concept, but that's one odd way to go about it. The flat profile means it kinda needs a carrying case and some screen protectors, but even factoring that stuff in it's still going to be about $20 cheaper than a regular 3DS.

I'm not sure what's so surprising or remarkable about it being ugly—few children's toys are beautiful electronics. This is clearly a children's toy.
