I don't know why, but this commercial has been causing A LOT of controversy... Can you pinpoint why?

All I see is an adorable Cherrios commercial. But people are angry because of the parents in the commercial.

And why are people angry? Because the parents are in an interracial marriage.

Excuse me while I go hit my head on a wall.

ARE YOU KIDDING ME? :deadlink:

WHY ARE THEY ANGRY?

And then I saw this video which gave me a little more hope for our future.

Can someone just please tell me why this is such a problem? This is nothing new. Just ugh.

UGH.

Thoughts?

Honestly...if I had seen this commercial on TV for the first time, I probably would have thought "oh hey, it's a mixed race couple" just because that's different and out of the ordinary.  I definitely wouldn't have thought there's anything wrong with it though.  When I looked at the YouTube video, I'd already read your comment saying that there was some controversy.  I figured that somebody was whining that because the dad was sleeping on the couch, it was supposedly portraying black people as lazy.  I was all ready to make a post on how that's definitely not what's going on, and then I watched the video with the kids commenting on the commercial.  I can't believe people were complaing about the portrayal of a mixed race couple!

Complaints about mixed race marriages would be the furthest thing from my mind when watching this, but for knowing that some people were offended.

Apparently most of the "controversy" comes from YouTube comments, which are even worse than news site comments (I swear, they can make anything a source of hate). Probably a mix of trolls and bona fide bigots, all empowered by the veil of anonymity.

That being said, it always makes me smile when I see something like an interracial couple in the media just being presented as people without any fanfare. Just being presented as, y'know, people. Good job, General Mills.

Same here.  I always like seeing interracial couples without any direct acknowledgement of the statistical unlikelihood of the situation.  On this rare instance I agree with Justice John Roberts: the best way to stop discriminating based on race is to stop discriminating based on race.  When you make these commercials, just choose two people without worrying about their race.

Better for TV advertisers to discriminate based on the factors we all know and love: underweight anorexic girls and unnaturally muscular guys.

YouTube comments.

Problem solved.

Being apart of a interracial relationship myself, I am perfectly okay with offending racist assholes.  ;d

People only date interracially because it's more cost-effective. SCKf1Yd.jpg

On TV? Most definitely.

Not as much on British TV since we still have prime time soaps.
