I just had a mini-panic attack over how small the roster was. Then I remembered how the other dojo worked and got over it.

Here's hoping Lucas comes back, he was my best in brawl. I'm bet Ness, Ice Climbers, Luigi (especially with this year of the of the Luigi thing), Zelda, C. Falcon, Yoshi (funny how he's the only original non-secret character not here?), Jigglypuff, and Marth will almost definitely be veterans, most others I might toss up in the air.

No new character speculation yet

*brofist* This. Bottom tier be damned, I tore shit up with Lucas. Unfortunately, while I'm expecting Ness to be in (since he's one of the original 12), Lucas is up in the air; while he was the most different "clone", he still was one, so he could be cut.

...Speaking of cut characters, here's the first victim:

Interesting to note that while it's Skyward Sword Link, he's a lefty here.

Also love the cel shaded look on the 3DS version - and it looks like the stages for that version seem to be more based on handheld games, while the WiiU version does the normal thing.

An explanation of how Wii Fit Trainer works, as well as Mega Man in action in actual gameplay.

I must say I like how the gameplay looks! It looks like they went back to the fast pacing of the original SSB.

Mega Man X / Zero / Protoman will probably be a late suspenseful reveal.

I doubt they'd add a second Capcom character, especially one from the same franchise. Maybe someone from a different company, I expect someone from Castlevania. Though Turtlebro said something earlier about how they could use Proto Man or Bass as different skins for Mega Man a la new/old Wario.

Mega Man is the big one I always wanted in. Bomberman would be kinda cool too.

EDIT: Also Samus fucks everything up from bottom tier.

DOUBLE EDIT: Castlevania isn't Capcom hurr durr durr

Hopefully at least Sonic will come back since Nintendo does have that exclusive deal for three games, and Snake would be nice too though the whole Keifer Sutherland thing might have that not happend. Also keep in mind that Nintendo and Sora are getting help from Namco, specifically from the Tekken and Tales teams for the game, so those guys may or may not have priority. Less violent Jin with Devil form as a Final Smash would be odd, to say the least.

If anything, hopefully they can make just as epic and awesome a soundtrack as last time. Holy crap.

Mega Man aside, I'm looking forward to this guy right here

But I want to say that Peach, Luigi and Yoshi are probably going to be back. Mario's running crew are safe. Wario I want to say will return too, but we need to see. Sonic is also a maybe, I can't see why they wouldn't bring him back in since Sonic: Lost World(s?) is coming out soon. Good publicity for the game. Jigglypuff has a strong chance or returning, but I think Lucario is going to get swapped for a new pokemon for promoting the new games (gone the way of Mewtwo) while the Pokemon Trainer I feel has a strong chance of being updated himself. Marth I'm sure is back, Ike is most likely gone for Chrom (as mentioned earlier), I don't want to weight in on any Earthbound characters because I want to see both Ness and Lucas come back, not sure about DeeDeeDee or MetaKnight, the ladder I'm sure could be returning for his popularity alone. Capt. Falcon I'm sure will be back, Olimar as well since Pikman 3 is going to be a thing, Game and Watch and the Ice Climbers might be out since they aren't as relevant to Nintendo's more recent titles and Snake I'm doubting will return. Wolf isn't coming back but Falco will and finally, Zelda and Ganondorf I'm sure will return. I can only hope that clone characters will be given more individual movesets so they can stop being clones.

I'd like to see a Belmont from Castlevainia in SSB4, but 3rd party characters are few and far between. Issac from Golden Sun might be nice as well, along with Travis Touchdown from No More Heroes. Since Namco is involved, I'm thinking Pac-Man or some retro character from their lineup. I'd be pissed if Heihachi showed up, but Playstation All-Stars has him so I'm doubtful he'll appear. Only time will tell.

I would completely approve of seeing a character from Tales in the roster (Lloyd would be the most obvious pick).

People were talking about the Wii Fit Trainer, and I thought they were joking, and then I saw her character video. I had mixed feelings initially, but I think she'll be an interesting character.

And I would be so gutted if they dropped either Solid Snake or Toon Link. My besties. :(

Going off of what we know and this drawing from Sakurai these are my guesses.

Returning:

Mario

Luigi

Peach

Bowser

DK

Yoshi

Wario

Mr. G&W

Link

Zelda

Ganondorf

Samus

Pit

Kirby

Metaknight

Dedede

Olimar (Or a player character from Pikmin 3)

Fox

C. Falcon

Pikachu

Pokemon Trainer (Maybe slightly altered)

Marth

Ness/Lucas

Sonic

Cut:

Falco (Clone)

Wolf (Clone)

Lucario (Replaced by another pokemon)

Ike (Replaced by another FE character or cut completely)

Ness/Lucas (Clone)

Snake (There hasn't been an MGS on a Nintendo console since The Twin Snakes, so there's no reason to keep him around)

Unsure:

Diddy Kong (Could see this going either way. I feel that it would not be a big loss to the roster, but he is apart of a popular franchise.)

Toon Link (Initially thought he would return for WWHD, however Toon Link was seen one of the 3DS levels in the background. It wouldn't make sense to have be playable but then have him in the background of a level. My other thought is having Toon Link on Wii U for WWHD, and bring back Child Link on 3DS for OoT3D, since they are essentially the same character.)

Ice Climbers (Are not exactly relevant to any modern series, and Mega Man could easily take their place as the NES representative of Smash Bros.)

R.O.B. (Much like Mario Kart DS, R.O.B. could have been a one time appearance.)

Jigglypuff (I honestly didn't expect the balloon pokemon to return in Brawl, but I could be wrong again.)

New:

Mega Man (ABOUT DAMN TIME)

Villager (Eh?)

Wii Fit Trainer (More eh?)

Namco Character (Since they are helping develop the game, they are definitely getting a third party spot. My first guess is Pac-Man, being that he's their mascot and it would help promote his upcoming game. The Tales director also mentioned wanting to get a character from the Tales series placed on the roster.)

Platinum Character (Given Nintendo rather close relationship with Platinum Games recently, I could easily see one of their characters placed on the roster, since it would also help promote their games. My guess is Bayonetta, although I could see someone from The Wonderful 101 instead.)

Shulk - Xenoblade Chronicles (Given the popularity of Xenoblade, and the fact that X appears to be from the same universe. His chances are boosted due to the fact he's a first party character.)

Castlevania Character (Given that Snake is most likely being dropped, I could see Konami receiving a replacement character from the latest 3DS Castlevania game, Lords of Shadows - Mirror of Fate.)

New Pokemon Characters (Probably something from Black and White or X and Y. Perhaps even a return of Mewtwo with the ability to change into his new form?)

New Fire Emblem Character (I don't know anything about FE, but everyone seems to be guessing Chrom from the new FE game. I could easily see Ike being replaced for someone new.)

Even though I know this probably won't happen, I would love if they added Geno from SMRPG. Square would probably have a more popular character instead, but I will still hope that Geno may end up being a surprise addition.

If Square were to somehow miraculously make an appearance it would likely either be Terra or Crono. Both main characters from insanely popular SNES RPGs, and both with a surprisingly loyal fan base. I would hope for Crono. As much as I love Terra, she's in Dissidia and I don't see that ever changing.

I think people will grow to love Wii Fit Girl... but I do think its lame how Smash Bros games are now being used to promote other Nintendo titles. I noticed it in Brawl where there were trophies of characters from games that just happened to be coming out at the same time... meanwhile, Melee was more about celebrating Nintendo's classic past. Yes, there were a couple of Pikmin/Animal Crossing trophies, but it seemed less forced somehow.

I don't think any characters added in Brawl were undeserving, except maybe Star Wolf or Lucario (not that Pokemon doesn't deserve representation, but he's hardly iconic).  Pokemon Trainer and Pit were overdue.  The rest were major characters from established franchises.  I would look at it the other way around: most characters added in Brawl were either deserving, but left out in previous versions, or characters that had earned a slot since Melee.  Olimar is a great example--Pikmin came out after melee and rapidly became a popular and respected franchise.  I remember a lot of excitement over the simple fact that Nintendo was inventing a genre again.  Then it turned out that Olimar was pretty good in Brawl and a lot of fun to play.  And speaking of promotion in Smash Bros games, don't forget that Marth and Roy's inclusion in Melee really jump-started the Fire Emblem series in the U.S.

Anyway, I'm getting sidetracked.  Brawl characters: good decisions.  Wii Fit Trainer:  ....... .  Not sure she's earned a slot, and it looks like this weird effort of trying for force Wii Fit into the main Nintendo canon, and I'm not sure I agree with that.  All the Wii X games almost felt like a separate brand to me, so I'm a little weirded out that she's joining Brawl. I'd feel the same way about playable Miis.  It just doesn't fit.

Am I the only one who's honestly just . . . a little sick of the mechanics?

Maybe it was just the vast hours I put into melee, but when Brawl came out I just didn't have any enthusiasm for the gameplay left. I honestly don't give a fuck about this game. Or who is in it. And that's surprising, to me.

You're not alone, Steel. I started to say the same thing in the E3 thread myself:

Nintendo had a good showing, but it was a bit lackluster for me. I wanted to see more 3DS, personally, but I can't fault them at all for the Wii U focus, given the competition. Brawl never captivated me like Melee did, so my excitement for the new SSB (can we all admit it just really needs a subtitle? Even "New Super Smash Bros" would have worked, given Nintendo's recent trend!) is diminished, even though I bet Villager will dominate.

It's the same thing, rehashed with better graphics and very minor changes - Nintendo's MO in recent years. Works for some people, but I'm quite bored of it.

Smash Bros is probably the only thing they do that gets a pass on being the same all the time since it is purely all about nostalgia. The mechanics were never super fresh and while they updated it it after the original on the N64 (which, for all intents and purposes, was just a quicky budget title they threw together to have something out there and for shits and giggles replaced all the generic guys with their mascots) it really is a palce for them to fluff themselves and esentially show off and brag. Just look at how it's been rpesented, espeically in Brawl - all the care and ahrd work was put into the soundtrack, and stages, and Assist Trophies and random references that barely anyone gets, not to mention basically stroking the fans who already like their stuff. I would like for them to update it a bit more here and there for sure, but it is purely a nostalgia trip, almsot like a museum.

That said, that's the only one that gets a pass. The rest of their actual games need to amp it up a bit more. Mario Kart 8 looks well and good and will be fun, but they need to expand it out a bit more. Double Dash on the Gamecube was an excellent way of refreshing the brand with something new, whcih is why I was super disappointed they took it away imediately afterwards, and don't even have it as an option. There's nos hame in steal stuff from other Kart racers either, since they pretty much stole the whol idea from them in the first place - the transforming karts thing from MK7 was cool, but why not have levels dedicated to just planes like Diddy Kong Racing, or even throw in a weird story mode like that game or ModNation Racers? Anyway, wrong game and wrong thread, but yeah. I lvoe them and I'll enjoy playing them a lot, and I probably won't regret a WiiU purchase in the future, but even I want something more.

For this game, I'd like for them to combien Adventure Mode from Melee and Subspace Emmissary from Brawl - Story mode, but have the stages actually take place in those franchises rather then just be a vaguely generic "desert" or "forest.," or whatnot. And just do something to spice up the gameplay - the option mode in Brawl was a promising but disappointing mode, let us really customize the game so we can play it like always or turn it into a (big gigantic quotes here) "real" fighting game that turns off pitfalls and all the random things if for some deranged reason someone wants to do that, moreso then it already has. Spcie up the costume selection a bit more to be more then just color swaps, and please be sure to keep the soundtrack as massive and mind blowing, since that was the one thing most people agree Brawl did right.

>Tripping is no longer present
>The 3DS and Wii U subtitles are the final names
>3DS and Wii U version might not launch at the same time, Sakurai refused to say which is further along in development but mentions that he's having trouble accommodating characters involving more than one fighter
>Ice Climbers all but confirmed to be returning

See but nostalgia is not the reason I played Melee. Sure, it was cool to play as Link or Samus, but what kept me coming back over and over again was the energy of the gameplay. I didn't care about trophies, I didn't care about random nostalgia characters. I cared about the kinetic high and madcap speed of the game. The way a round could be completely reversed with one good dodge. The original was very roughhewn - an easy cash in. Melee's balance was nearly perfect. Brawl added too much and became something of a bloated monstrosity, and this new game doesn't look like it's going to do any better. The only thing remotely interesting to me is the new art style for the 3DS version.

Smash Bros despite remaining the same still manages to be the freshest fighting game around these days. (Never mind that the new Guilty Gear in development looks awesome.) Nintendo isn't exactly known for changing a selling formula. Despite massive sales, Brawl definitely wasn't as well received as either of the previous two. Rather than feeling like an updated game, Brawl was just a fresh coat of paint and an updated roster. These SSB games appear to be the same. If they are these may be the breaking point. Nintendo's biggest problem in general is their inability to create games that feel fresh while appealing to classic Nintendo sensibilities.
