There is no playlist here, nor a theme. I suppose I'll just post something I come across or have come across whenever I remember to. It may not necessarily be all Australian music either.

Expect Eclecticism. Expeclectations.

To kick off and honour the thread's title, here is the latest single from Karnivool "The Refusal". It's a little different from their other stuff - especially with the slight screaming touch - but it's good, as expected of Kenny.

This tune is the intro track to my favourite Butterfly Effect album - the same album from which comes my most favourite track of all time, which I shall post tomorrow. As such, I'm treating it kind of like an introduction to my upcoming collection. It's actually the backing track for a short showreel animation I have had planned out for a long time now. It is short but to me that makes it even better in that it just goes all in pretty much straight away. The first time I heard it I was blown away; there is just this...immersive feeling to it as you get dragged in for all 79 seconds and then it's over and you're left wanting more but you know to have more would ruin the short, sweet experience.

So as the first official actually planned addition to this list, I'm presenting my absolute number one song. There was a significant gap between my listening to older Butterfly Effect songs and coming across this new album and it was this song that sealed it for me. It sits permanently at the top of the list. The sound of it is nothing too fancy or spectacular and has that standard almost-grunge, almost-metal alt. sound but the raw emotion that goes into the song really shines through in Clint's voice (as is standard with this band's songs). It's really a shame that Clint left, because for me it was mostly the strength and magnificence of his voice that made the songs, which is especially clear throughout the final climax of this track. Close your eyes, float away and don't think about it, just feel it.

I've made a double video post for a number of reasons. This song was given an acoustic version, which significantly changes the sound but keeps the same emotive atmosphere in there. I have a specific attachment to this version, as does a close friend of mine, because reasons. I didn't want to spread the one song over two posts/days but I felt that being such an amazing song - and also being my number one - both versions needed to be posted.

Another track to which I have a special connection. This one is actually an acoustic rendition made specifically for the OST of a successful Australian television series. The original is not quite as haunting or beautiful.

There is a very specific memory regarding a very specific moment a couple of years ago when I heard this song and it is a moment I will never ever forget.

There is a local pub that hosts gigs for brilliant Australian acts. Some are unknown, some are up-and-coming, some are already huge (like Wolfmother or Dead Letter Circus or Art vs Science).

This was the first band I ever saw play at said pub (the first in a long line to follow). There was barely any crowd but these guys were amazing and hailed all the way from Perth, Western Australia, the starting point of many greats like Karnivool, Birds of Tokyo, Boy and Bear, Eskimo Joe, John Butler Trio, and more.

This afternoon I heard a song on the radio that I have always loved so much but have not heard in maybe ten years or so.

This song used to be on an old mix I would listen to over and over again, along with some other songs that will eventually be posted here.

Tool - Stinkfist

As is Tool standard, the video is weird and disturbing as all hell.

I've not posted in a while but starting tomorrow, I'm going back to the start (or at least as far as I can remember). Where my addiction to and evolution of my constantly expanding musical collection and tastes first developed.

So. The song that (I think) started it all.

This used to play on RAGE (music video show on TV) on Saturday mornings for the countdown. A lot of stuff I heard before this would my parents' or sister's music that I would hear like Backstreet Boys, Queen, and Les Miserables. SO MUCH LES MISERABLES. When I went to see that film, I knew every damn song after years of indoctrination.

I was never passionately into music back then, it was just a thing, and it was just there. Bein' a thing. Then along came what were once the old gods of metal and I thought it was the coolest thing I had ever heard. Musically.

The very first CD I ever wanted to buy for myself. Wanted to spend my birthday money on it but my dad really didn't want me to because I was only 13. Bought a Cartman plush instead. I pretty much loved the entire album (my friend recorded his copy onto a cassette and I would listen to it on my walkman. Yup. My WALKMAN.) but this is one of a few tracks that really stood out for me.

And this was the very first CD I ever bought for myself. Along with Metallica's S&M album. I used to load them both up on the stereo and sit and play drums to those albums over and over.

When I was out in the bush in 2000 at a month-long outdoor education camp, my friends told me about a number of bands I'd never heard. On our family visiting day, one friend had his MD player (Yup. Mini-Discs) brought in for the day and that was the first time I ever heard these guys.

After coming back from said camp, there were four songs I remember hearing that first opened me up to the music of my peers.

When I was 16, this song was so damn cool. I really liked the whole album, actually.

Nowadays, it's a bit blunt on the emo but it still sounds pretty good.

Still love that guitar.

16 was full of a whole lot of heavy, nu-metal and punk.

This particular track was shown to me by someone who used to be a great friend but who I am no longer in contact with.

Damn it was a bitch trying to learn this on guitar.

That year saw a lot of System too. I remember a book I was reading and this song was almost like its backing track, as it reminded me of the book every time I heard it.

The first time I heard this was the acoustic version from an unplugged set. It wasn't until years later that I heard the original - this version.

This was the best backing track to some carefree cruisin' in Dave Mirra Freestyle BMX. Also a good song on its own.
