Remember going down the back alley in OoT Castle Town and encountering the dying soldier? Was his death ever explained? Or (more likely) has there ever been a well-accepted theory regarding his death? Sorry if this has been covered already, it's just a facet of OoT I haven't thought about in ages.

Edit: To be more specific, are there any theories as to who killed him?

I just assume he died of his injures from Ganondorf's attack, since Navi says "He's not moving anymore." when you try to talk to him again.

Well, You see him in town before ever reaching the castle. And once you finally meet Zelda in the courtyard of the castle, she shows you Ganondorf (presumably) entering the presence of the King inside. At this point he's bowing and smiling, and evidently in the good graces of the court, so he hasn't launched his big attack yet. Did he, or one of his minions attack the soldier surreptitiously? I don't know.

Do you? I thought he only showed up after you got all the Stones and that cutscene where Impa ran away from Zelda; I might be wrong though, haven't replayed OoT in a long time.

Huh, I don't really remember running into this guy before. It certainly makes the game a tinge darker than I remember.

The dying soldier doesn't appear until the scene where Impa and Zelda flee, after you get all three stones. Still its mysterious because Hyrule Castle Town is totally peaceful and apart from this one guy there's been no sign of a struggle. You'd think the soldiers in the guard-house would've come out when Impa and Zelda fled to cover their trail, but they're still there, apparently only one soldier was brave enough to stand up to Ganondorf.

Another thing, he's placed where its easy to miss him (intentionally?), and his advice to go to the Temple of Time isn't even needed at this point (at least I always knew where to go, possibly from Navi). Very mysterious.

It's pretty obvious that he got the rough end of the shaft thanks to Ganondorf and his baddies. He also explains what might of happened to the king, who for some reason is only mentioned in passing throughout the entire game.

The only thing that this whole thread has shown me was that I didn't do nearly enough exploring in OoT. It almost warrants another playthrough. Almost.

Yeah, that dialog with the dying soldier in the alley only happens after you see Impa and Zelda escaping. He was injured while fighting off Ganondorf's attack on the castle.

Oh, ok. It's been a while since I played OoT, and I thought he could be found there from the beginning of the game. I also forgot what he'd said, so that YouTube video was very helpful. Thanks, guys.

Yeah, I always thought he was put out of the way on purpose. Nintendo's way of not making the dark elements of the game as apparent. I think it makes the game more intriguing, though, not having everything blatantly pointed out to you like in the newer Zelda games. You only find him through diligent exploration.

Last time I played through OoT I found a sort of secret little nook in the Kokiri shop I'd never found before. It was exciting.

I always imagined that he was the only solider who`s injuries were rated T for Teen, the rest of them are all cut up into little bits by Ganondorf.

Plus later there is tons of Re-Deads down there, probably cursed soliders.

He was injured during Ganon's attack on the castle. I figured that he just ran after Ganon/his followers to buy more time for Zelda and Impa's escape. He may have actually been injured in the alley, not at the castle.

The guard is easy to miss because he can only be encountered during a brief window of time in the game. After Link draws the Master Sword, the guard disappears from the back alley when you return to the past. Either Nintendo was seriously trying to sneak him in there, or the guards found and moved his body as part of an ongoing clean-up job while Link was placing the Spiritual Stones.

Yeah, I found him kind of weird. Nothing seems to be amiss, anywhere.

Still, at least it's not as bad as in Twilight Princess where the town's completely oblivious to a hostile takeover and apparently, a huge six-limbed monster attacking the castle.
